WARNING!! DO NOT REMOVE THE SMALL SCREWS AT THE TOP!!! Not only will you strip the holes but it will make it impossible to get the darn thing open. Also, there must be some one else holding the other end as this will not separate as easily as they are making it look.

This procedure *does* work but you need to set the arm up correctly first, plus you need a couple of extra tools. If you do it correctly using the right tools then it should only take about 10~15 minutes. REMEMBER - REMOVING THE SAFETY BOLTS MEANS THAT THE ARMS CAN COLLAPSE FULLY, CREATING A DANGEROUS PINCHING HAZARD! MAKE SURE THAT THE SAFETY BOLTS ARE ALWAYS IN PLACE AND FULLY TIGHTENED SO THE ARMS CAN NEVER CLOSE FULLY. - Firstly, turn the tension knobs all the way clockwise - to the 'tighten' direction. This will reduce the pre-loading of the springs to their minimum so they hardly under tension. - Next, get a small block of wood which is slightly wider than the gap between the arms when they are 'closed' (i.e no load on the arm) - Push the arm down slightly to open the gap and insert the block to hold the sides of the arm apart enough so that they are just off the heads of the safety screws (the ones he removes first). You may need to secure the arm on the vest or some other support pin in order to do this. - Remove the safety screws. - VERY CAREFULLY remove the wooden block so that the arm can collapse all the way. !!!! KEEP YOUR FINGERS OUT OF THE WAY - USE AN APPROPRIATE TOOL OR LEVEL TO DO THIS !!! - Once the arm is fully collapsed you can then remove the bolt securing the end pin of the spring. This requires two allen keys as you'll need to stop the pin rotating when you remove the bolt. YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE AOR LOOSEN ANY OTHER BOLTS. - Push the pin through - as shown in the video. It should come out quite easily (you may need to squeeze the two sides of the arm together to fully remove all tension from the spring). - Note that there should be two plastic spacer washers either side of the spring end. They will drop out - don't lose them. - Unscrew the spring from the bottom mounting as shown and then screw in the other spring far enough so that the hole aligns perfectly with the pin hole at the upper end. - Push the pin throught the spring to make sure it is correctly aligned (note that you may need to squeeze the arm together slightly. And remember to make sure that the tension control is fully to the 'tighten' direction - Pull the pin back out most of the way (hint: place a screwdriver or allen key under the spring to stop it dropping down) - Using a small pair of pliers or tweezers, hold one of the plastic spacer washers in place and then push the pin back through the spacer and the spring, but not all the way through. - Do the same to get the other plastic washer onto the pin and then push the pin back through the other side of the arm. - Put the securing bolt back into the pin and tighten the pin/bolt with two allen keys. - Use a lever or other tool to prise the two sides of the arm apart far enough to insert the block of wood again - BE CAREFUL!!!!!!! KEEP FINGERS OUT !!!!!! It may be safer to put the arm on a stand or on the vest so you can pull it down in order to insert the block of wood. - Replace both the safety bolts which keep the arm apart a safe distance when it is 'closed' - Repeat with the second arm section. -Job done. If I have time I will make a video of the procedure, but these instructions should be clear enough.

Very good advice in the comments. Read fully. Here's my experience. a) Secure one end of the arm while you work. b) use some black tac to keep the nylon washers in place c) pushing a screw driver into the bold-hole, helps to line up the spring / washers before you rethread the bolt. :) Good luck!

I can see how many might struggle with this, especially if they’re not experienced with this type of work. I’m really surprised they didn’t include a manual for this operation. But anyway here is the easiest way I think I can explain the process. 1. Wear tool gloves or something along those lines. It’s always good to be safe, especially if this is your first time. 2. Before you start make sure the adjustment knobs are loosened all the way. This is imperative. 3. There is no need to remove the smaller screw at the bottom despite what this video is showing you. And by small screw I mean the smaller screw that’s NOT the safety bolt. 4. After you remove the safety bolt and replace the spring and are ready to reinsert the safety bolt again, push your L wrench through the inserting hole, white grips, and spring hole first and use it as a guide to reinsert the safety bolt again. (TIP: lay the arm in a flat position and use gravity to align the white grips while you do this. If you try to stand the arm up while aligning the white grips you are gonna struggle more than you need to) The rest is in the video. I got it done under 7 minutes. If you have any questions reply to this comment and I’ll try to respond as soon as I can. Good luck.

I can't really understand why you all had so much trouble with this. Loose the tension on the springs before you start (like I saw in one comment here) and it was no problem doing the process. And I am a really unpractical guy when it comes to things like this.

Update! - Following this video - seemingly in two parts as the first section is silent, but second bit does have sound of sorts - plus reading assorted positive comments below, I decided to have a go. As advised in one comment, I cut 2 inches off a broom handle ready to wedge between the arms for getting the ‘safely screws’ out. Next I took the tension off the main ‘tighten/loosen’ adjustment knobs. Then using the broom handle bit, I stretched the arms out and wedged it in between. Once done, I undid the safety screws. Next the main pivot screw, BUT being mindful of the two black nylon washers/spacers either side of the spring inside the arm. Not knowing - still don’t - if there is a set distance or measurement for how much thread should into the spring I ‘played it by ear’ as first I marked the already fitted spring with a black marker pen on the exposed thread as a guide. By carefully pushing the pivot pin out with a small thin screwdriver, the spring became free. Next up was unwinding it and then carefully putting the new (Red) spring on the end and slowly winding it in up to the mark made earlier with the old (Blue) spring. Once done it was a case of ‘jiggling’ the pivot bolt about but first I pushed it a fraction through so as to place one of the nylon black washers on, then it was a case of easing the spring end along using a small screwdriver so as the pivot bolt could slide in. I was amazed that the first one took me about 10 minutes from scratch, while the second one I did in about 6 minutes. Apart from the cut-off from the broom handle, two Allen keys, a small screwdriver and a pair tweezers for the nylon washers, nothing exceptional was required. Hope this may be of help to anybody contemplating doing this job.
