I just did this. Replace the upper steering shaft and bearing also. The u joint in the upper steering shaft was worse and the bearing was dry. Even in this video the upper shaft I can see has excessive play when he tries to install the new lower shaft. The upper shaft is also a falure point. Use Motorcraft parts and get new bolts!!

You said something at 2:53 that struck a question in my head. When I drive my marauder the steering wheel tends to wander. It's hard to keep straight. I've changed EVERYTHING THAT DEALS WITH SUSPENSION FRONT TO BACK. Still have the wandering issue. But now from what you said at 2:53 I wonder if I replace the steering shaft and didn't put it back like i exactly took it out and now the steering wheel is wandering

Should the new shaft wobble around in the fire wall hole? I tightened everything down and it drives ok and the inside has the bearing tightened down

Good video. Might be helpful to take the air cleaner off and you should also replace the intermediate shaft and bearing as well.

I need help the beginning of this video has me worried . I was taking a left in a 2008 P71 i recently bought and my steering wheel felt like it snapped and I had no more response in my steering wheel and went straight had to slam the breaks from hitting a guard rail . And now my steering wheels completely spins

Steering shaft bolts came out but the shaft won’t pry out. What should I do? Used pb blaster and heat and I got nothing

Thanks for this video. Whenever i slow down to a light and the road is bumpy the steering wheel will pull to one side or another...mostly to the right. I have replaced the entire front end..ball joints, calipers, rotors, stabilizer bars, rack and pinion, upper and lower control arms, and it still does it. Brand new tires, alignment...I just can't figure out what is causing this to pull. Could this steering knuckle / shaft be the issue do you think? Thanks so much for any reply you may give!

I hav play in stErng wEL Ftr disconecTng that column - I herd theories from mechs. hU were mistAkN, thN I foOnd problM. In this cAs, EvN thO both columns were new(from dealer recall btw), if I turn stErng wEl right left etc, EvN wN cR is off, there is play.. ever since I disconnected column.. I foOnd that play, OpN Ur hood, luk a joint BtwEn upper & lower colums mUv the stErng wEL left right only where’s that play- U mIt C as I did, that upper column turns(just a small trn- 2” on a 15” stErng wEL equals 1 small smitget on a 1” dIameter column), bt NEwA, if U lEn forward far enuf to C that joint, & gently, slOlE swigl stEring wEL where that play is, U mA C upper colum mUving, & turning that 13mm tItNd joint.. but lower column NOT turning with it👋😔

What symptoms should I be looking for to determine this is the issue? My car moves all over the road but it also has a lot of oversteering going on and also when I turn a corner the steering wheel won't correct itself, I have to manually correct it

This is happening to me right now. I sprayed grease on the lower shaft and it steers perfect and returns now. So check that.

My thoughts too, he didn't touch the tie rods or control arms and the tires do not have abnormal wear.

I replaced this and now my power steering pump seems to groan. Does that mean I installed incorrectly?

Couple of things, That particular steering shaft is used on 03 and up, The first time I watched this video I thought to myself "why use the seat belt?, just take the key out that will lock the steering wheel" nope it does not, And I still don't know why i doesn't. I had the lower end of the steering shaft off (for something else I was doing) But I could not feel any stiff spots in the joints, I'm thinking that I have a bad strut bearing binding up on me. Dooh, never mind, Just remembered that my struts do not spin.

since it did spin, if you don’t know how many times, it mIt. BhUv Ur wallet to center clockspring - it’s a simple yet pAn in thE S job. mOst important is to detach batRE for at lEst 1/2 hr OR Dtach both termNLz & touch them together for at lEst 15 secNds.. B4 fidLng w/air bag. clik the hNdsum fAc Iv got a viDO on it☝️
