Many people (myself included) have reported issues with steering wheel alignment after changing this shaft. After many an hour researching this, it appears to be an issue with the cheap replacement shafts not being "clocked" appropriately to OE spec. In my experience the cheap ones will almost certainly move your steering wheel off center to the left or right about 5-15° (this can potentially be corrected with an alignment). They will also likely introduce significant play into your steering wheel. Maybe you'll be the lucky guy who gets a "good" cheap one, but if your luck is like mine save yourself the time and headache and just buy the OEM shaft from Ford (it was dead on). Hope this helps some folks. I just had the same issue.

Great video, this helped me on my 2008 f150. The bottom bolt was a lot easier to get to from the top of the engine bay with a 6" extension and a short socket and a regular ratchet. The bottom bolt is angled upward and it was about impossible to get it from underneath. I also noticed the bolts for the shaft had yellow patch lock on them, I used medium strength loctite on the bolts when I installed the new shaft. Taking the shaft out of the bottom, I used a pry bar to the rear of the steering rack and hammered it upward. It came right off.

Excellent video, my truck had a different issue from this part. There were hard spots in the steering both ways and coming back to the center position. At first I thought it was a weak pump, but it was the lower UV joint on this shaft seizing up.

Worked perfectly! Was a bit difficult to actually get to the lower screw, but was able to do it after using a bungee cord to hold that fat hose out the way and an 8” extension for the ratchet (didn’t need to use a flex ratchet). Thanks for the vid. Made this job really easy and saved hundreds or dollars doing it myself with part ordered from you guys!!

Mechanic quoted me over $800 to fix this. He said you have to remove the entire steering column to change. This guy just did it in the video in like five minutes. You gotta be kidding me.

Will Moore Guy in video had a lift, the tight tools and fast forwarded a lot. Granted he didn’t remove the steering column and your mechanic does sound bullshit. 😆

That sucks. You need to find new mechanic.

There’s multiple parts to the steering shaft and Column. Perhaps your issue is another part. Also this part is not cheap. Over 200 dollars for oem part plus labor. Don’t like a certified technicians price then do it yourself or have Joe Schmo put it on
@michellemorrison5841 Жыл бұрын
Possible the mechanic misunderstood you and thought you were talking about upper shaft, usually to avoid confusion refer to it as intermediate or lower shaft, I had the same issue with a junkyard service desk, and I said no not the steering column shaft, I need the lower shaft that connects the rack directly to the column lol

Not sure if anyone is still reading these on this post, BUT, I just replaced mine and the steering is excellent now, fixed the issue for sure, however, my steering wheel is no longer straight when going down the road. There is about a 20 degree tilt to the right. I don’t understand how this could happen given that on these vehicles, it can ONLY go on one one of two ways.

I have a 2008 F-150 STX. I found it’s super easy to just dive into the engine bay and use a small 3/8 impact gun with a 10mm socket to get the bottom one bolt. Saves you from jacking it up.
@tarasuarez98849 жыл бұрын
Just did this on my 2004ford f150 fx4 and if you just jack it up you will need a partner to turn the steering wheel to get the bottom bolt which is the 10mm its a pretty tough one to do because of the raiditor hose but probably saved me a 100 dollars but its a very capable fix

Hey thanks for the video. I replaced my intermediate steering shaft (2011 F150) but after driving it 15-20 min. and thinking all is good, turns out it is still binding. Any ideas? Does it need an alignment? Possibly reprogramming as they do with the rack and pinion? Thanks

do you know what would cause my wheel to have a clunk noise coming from it when i turn it. it looks like its coming from the shaft like the u joints or something. i can visually see it when i have a friend turn the wheel. but it happened when i had my rack and pinion steering replaced my a mechanic shop. it never had this noise till then. im getting multiple people saying the shaft itself is bad. But i don't get how it would go bad that quick. or the bearing is gone or worn out, either they forgot to put it back in or used an old one ??

Could use a small dremel or angle grinder, and cut it off just be damn careful, otherwise if you remove the power steering pump out of way, you should have enough room for vice grips or a biter bit/socket...

1A Auto Parts Perfect thanks for the suggestion . I assumed the part was defective / ends not welded on straight because the steering wheel was perfectly straight before install and alignment was fine. After installing the new part (correctly) it was off by quite a bit maybe 15-20 degrees. Is it normal to do an alignment after install? I don’t recall seeing this mentioned in any of your videos.

I had the same popping in mine, especially when turning the steering wheel. I found that the nut was loose on the connection from the removable section to the shaft coming from inside the truck.
