Great video! Thank you so much for this! I've been trouble shooting cranking issues on my '98 C3500 diesel. You explained the steps well and they were easy to follow, for me to be able to fix my truck.

So after it is replaced and the neg cable is back on the battery, it should just start right up? Or will I need to jump the battery?
@bossadamsgarage2 жыл бұрын
Should start right up as long as your battery is good.

does that black wire on the back of the alternator go on positive on the battery?
@bossadamsgarage Жыл бұрын
The plug that you replug is technically the positive on the alternator. The black wire is your negative.

The next thing you're gunna want to do then is work from the battery out. I would also suggest picking up an inexpensive volt meter. You're gunna want to check the alternator and if thats producing the proper 12-13 volts, you're gunna wanna check the battery to the alternator. If none of that works and your battery and alternator are good, you'll have to start wire chasing which is not fun.

sO did yOu disconnect the positive and negative on the alternator?? Also did yOu get the same alternator that came rated 105 amps or yOu got a bigger alternator

I disconnected the negative terminal on the battery first. I bought a factory replacement. I guess you could go bigger if you want but I have no reason to.

Does the battery have to be unplugged?

Anytime you're messing with any electrical component on a vehicle, it's good practice to disconnect the battery. This is to ensure that you do not cause a short in the system somewhere that may not be noticable.
