You're so lucky, Chris, for having your alternator at the top. In my 1997 Mazda 626, the alternator is under the engine towards the back, right above the passenger side front axle. Had to drop the axle out just to take the alternator out since the alternator is too big to fit between all of the wires and the engine and the axle. Such a difficult task, especially seeing that it was the first time I've ever worked on my car by myself. But I'm glad I did it! I definitely see why mechanics charge so much for this job, especially on difficult cars like mine.

Holy shit. I have an Volvo v50 with a bad alternator. Went to the scrapyard today and found one. Think I’m gonna try replacing it myself tomorrow. The mechanic here said 300’ish dollars for just the job so hopefully I manage and save those for another job. How easy this is depends on the vehicle. On some Cadillac K bodies for example the alternator is water cooled and stuffed behind the radiator. You need to remove the radiator (which has oil cooler lines, water lines, and transmission lines) to change the alternator and then re-fill and re-assemble. It's a 6 hour job by book labor rate. Not so easy... On other cars it's literally 5 minutes and you're done.

Thanks for your wonderful how-to videos!!I used this video to replace my alternator on my 2008 GMC Yukon Denali 6.2L, 203000 miles. Everything was going good but when I tried to lift out the old alternator, it wouldn't budge. The rusty "sleeves" in the mounting holes seemed to be stuck, I was perplexed. I searched another how-to video and found this helpful tip:To make the process of installing the new alternator easier... there are two sleeve inserts the two bolts go through, in the alternator mounting bracket. These sleeves move and can be easily moved a mm or two by a couple taps with a hammer, going from the engine side towards the bumper side. That pushes/slides each sleeve back a little and creates clearance for the new alternator to easily drop in. Tightening down the bolts again pushes these two sleeves back to a snug fit against the alternator body. [This allowed me to go ahead and PRY the old unit up and out without any further concern about the rusty sleeves.]Hope this helps anyone with a similar concern.

OMG - what an INCREDIBLY EASY PART TO ACCESS! I worked on my 2009 Range Rover Sport HSE alternator back in mid-July. What a nightmare! It was located mid-engine - making it split decision to access it from the top or bottom. I chose the bottom which made it impossible to see past the driver side of the part. I had to work blindly, using my fingers to "see" as I disconnected the main power cable and top horizontal bolt. Since my LR3 is 15 years old, separating the wire harness connector took 20 minutes of prying and colorful expletives due to lack of accessibility. I also managed to gash my right forearm on a piece of metal sticking out of the inside of the front bumper. If this is a hazard guys, I highly recommend covering this over with duct tape before you attempt this repair. Sadly, the brand new alternator rated at 150 amps began failing last week, and after working a 12-hour shift it rapidly began discharging my battery to the point my electrical went black. When alternators fail, often times they become an electrical short and completely drain your battery.

Unfortunately for me, changing the alternator on my 2012 Chevy Equinox LTZ is not going to be as easy as shown here. But you did provide some pretty good tips such as using the tools for releasing the belt tension, moving any obstructing items, and brushing off any corrosion or dirt off the connections and mounts. After hours when I worked at an auto parts store I offered $20 to install parts for them in the parking lot. That was as long as it was a simple thing like alternators, belts, water pumps, ect An average of 5 people in 3 hours took the offer. Easy money :D

Cryogenia Band Well it really depends on the car. We had a Ford Focus, and you wouldn't believe how much of a pain that is. On that car it's like in the middle of the engine, so there's no easy way to get to it.

Great video. I just did that same job on my 2004 explorer a couple months ago. About the only difference I found was that after removing the bolts, I discovered they only had to be loosened a few turns to get the alternator out as it just rested on the horizontal bolts and the bolt head against the face was enough to secure it on the bottom with 2 other bolts on top. On another note, if you're buying the alternator from a local parts supplier, have them test the new alternator before bringing it home to install. Turned out the "new" one they had in stock was bad also and they had to order me one from another store.

Will be looking into this as an upgrade for my 2002 ranger as I'm working on adding some aux lighting as well. backup lights and a 50" light bar. Just gotta fab up some mounts or a headache rack to mount it on. I have a fisher homesteader plow mounted as well, so I may look into a dual battery setup as well

For my truck, I'm looking at having to do more of just the headache rack portion as the bed rail caps are part of my bed liner and block the stake pockets. My plan is to get some 1/4" flat stock to slide under my truck box and anchor using the J bolts securing the box and then fabricate the hoop and maybe the upper frame depending on how it looks with a 50" light bar.

Hey Chris, I hope that anti-seize wasn't an aluminum particle based product. Aluminum based anti-seize going into an aluminum threads will corrode and actually act as a lock tight product and will gaul the threads together. I learned that the hard way. I use Copper-Kote anti-seize because it works with all automotive hardware. (as long as its not a copper thread , which is extremely rare on modern vehicles. Great video!

From my experience you may have the correct size alternator but it might not fit the belt. as so you just have to take off the old one and put it on the new one, also might be good to remove the whole belt and inspect it, mine shredded when i replaced it, thus making life more difficult. for any of those interested i did the fix on a 2003 ford E350 15 passenger van with more than 280,000 mile's on it.

For those wondering why the alternator is grounded it is basically like a generator that creates an AC voltage, so it needs what is called a full bridge rectifier in order to make a DC voltage. So for more current (Amps) to flow It will need that good ground connection in order to have proper current flow to the positive terminal of the battery. Some people are scared of putting a higher amperage alternator in their system because it may fry some circuits, but in reality that is just not true. Even the battery doesn't care about charging current. "The most basic rule is that you can charge at any current you like until the battery reaches 2.4 volts per cell at 25 deg. C (77 deg. F). That's the familiar 7.2v per 6v battery, or 14.4v for a 12v battery. Below this voltage, essentially 100% of the current goes into charging the battery, so there is negligible heating or gassing." - www.evdl.org/pages/hartcharge.html Just thought I'd drop some info hence I have seen many people thoroughly confused about the subject in the past. Ha, alternators SHOULD be easy to replace, but then you work on a Suzuki XL-7/Grand Vitara that has easy bolts and all, but then there's that one Torx screw that strips which turns into a 4 hour job to remove the alternator otherwise.

Thanks again Chris, you've saved me _more_ money. Went to Salvo and got a Refurb for about $90 and $20 for the serpentine belt tool, so all in for $110 sounds pretty good to me.

Crazy how mechanics charge a lot for alternator replacement. I did mine myself and took like 40 minutes

Been watching your vids for years, and just realized I wasn’t subscribed. Awesome videos but I recently ran into a problem which is forcing me to get a new alternator. I came across the term “relearning” is that just when you unplug the the battery itself or change the alternator? What is the importance of relearning? TIA!

Wow I wish I would've seen this video sooner, I could've replaced my grandfathers alternator in his truck and it would've saved the $302 that they gave to a shop for them to replace it . AllYourTechNow That would be pretty awesome! Redlining for a short period of time wont do damage (that is why there is a redline) but redlining for a long time can cause damage!

Do a video showing how to change an alternator that is under the engine! All the videos I’m finding show them on the top and much easier to replace! I have a 2011 Kia Soul and having a hell of a time lining up bolts
