**Always follow the instructions in your repair manual when doing repair or maintenance work on Outdoor Power Equipment. Manuals can be found at the manufacturers website.**
This video is about replacing the oil pump worm gear on a Stihl MS 029 Chainsaw. The worm gear is indirectly connected to the clutch hub using a metal arm attached to the worm gear. When the clutch is engaged and the clutch hub turns it will turn the worm gear and operate the oil pump. The oil pump pumps bar and chain oil from the oil tank to the bar and chain, thus lubricating the bar and chain. If the oil pump is not working correctly than the bar and chain will not be lubricated properly.
The oil pump is located behind the clutch, and removal of the clutch is required to get to the oil pump and worm gear.

Has to be one of the best tutorial videos I have seen on KZbin. Great explanations and attention to detail on all the little tips that save you causing unnecessary damage whilst repairing a saw. Even gave the torque settings. Excellent work.

Good job explaining to be sure the piston is up enough to cover the ports. I followed other vid that did not explain that aspect and it caught my rope and cut it off. Fortunately I was able to pull the muffler and got the chunk.

Great Guide - thanks. I stupidly ran my Stihl MS 181 without any chain oil for about 15 minutes. I then filled it with oil, but now its leaking oil out of the bottom of the saw. Could this be the oil pump in your opinion? Thank you

I appreciate you taking the time to show all of us about the worm gear & how to replace it. I have another questions: If the worm gear is still in good shape & you have more oil inside the casing then on the chain is the oil pump bad? Or any recommendations?

Great video! Ihave same saw. When I tighten the clutch back on spindle it is really tight against the worm gear. It makes it so when the clutch is spinning, it is spinning the worm gear which then makes the clutch drum and chain spin. Any suggestions? I can easily remove worm gear, it’s not seized or anything.

Great video, but can you help? I'm at the stage where I have taken out the worm gear ( StihlMS361c) There doesn't appear to be any problem with the worm gear, but I don't understand how it works. You say the worm arm picks up the drive from the clutch, but I don't see how it does it. There is a smooth plate behind the clutch and I can't see anything for the end of the worm arm to engage in? I bought the chainsaw second hand recently. Thanks
@frankmurray9172
@frankmurray9172 10 жыл бұрын
I'm answering my own question ! I found a notch on the clutch cover the worm gear arm engages in. I took the pump out and it is pumping OK when the cog is turned. The oil supply to the bar gallery is OK that leaves only the supply from the oil resevoir. A friend has my air compressor, but when I get it back I will try some compressed air through the pipe. Its got me thinking there is nothing wrong. I have heard that this model (Stihl ms361c) does not produce much oil anyway. There is an adjustment underneath to increase oil supply Another question; There is a spring steel circle of metal that runs round the inside circumference of the clutch housing about 3/8ths inch wide, what is its purpose ? It looks like it might be difficult to get the clutch cover back because of it.

I can't find any problem with the oiling. I think I will just turn the adjuster underneath up to maximum oiling. I am reassembling but have hit a problem; the clutch housing won't sit down flat due to the circular sprung steel I mentioned in previous post. I can't get it to sit down sufficient to get the circlip on. I can see that you have to line up the worm gear arm. Have you any suggestions ? Thanks

I have watched this Video ,4 times now , and when you reassemble the clutch , there does not appear to be a Pressed Metal washer with top marked on it shown any where. I took mine apart as you did , BUT -- but for the life of me I can not seem to remember which way it goes back . All the rest of the procedures, i have done , but it will not go back into place,. Please any tips will be helpful , thanks.. Jacko in Australia.

No. The chain brake consists of a steel band that wraps around the drum/sprocket. The drum/sprocket has to be removed in order to access the clutch for removal. You can do the rope in the spark plug hole just remember the connecting rod will bend if you crank on it too hard. The impact wrench he used in the beginning to remove the bar nuts would be ideal for removing the clutch, that way you wont have to worry about messing up the engine or locking the chain.

Removing the clutch- I just take my impact driver and spin the clutch off to the right and do not need to block the piston. I also install it the same way. It is a good idea to clean the clutch and sprocket with break cleaner when you have them off, as well as greasing the sprocket bearing. I use hi temp wheel bearing grease for it and the worm gear. I also like to clean the input and output oil lines as the same time. They can get blocked with sawdust debris from time to time.

What happened to your worm gear cover plate. If you put the clutch on without the cover plate, the clutch will chew down the worm gear into nothing. That is the voice of experience, because my 029 ate off the top of the warm gear all the way down to the metal arm. The cover plate has a recess in it to allow it to fit on top of the worm gear it also has the word TOP on the side that faces outward, so you do not put it on wrong. Most folks do not torque the clutch beyond hand tight because it will tighten as you run the saw. I take mine off with my 20 volt impact wrench.
