I saved myself $50 by doing this myself. This technique works for many different brands of saws besides Poulan. Also, I was doing this for the first time myself, and there are other videos out there by people who might actually do this for a living, so give those a go if this video doesn't quite do it for you.

THE BEST video on the subject. Thank you for 'cutting to the chase' and explaining/demonstrating how to complete the procedure. I began to watch half a dozen videos which were filled with superfluous information from how the clutch works to how to remove the bar, chain etc.. I agree that if a person is taking on the task of replacing the clutch, they ALREADY know how to remove covers, bar, chain, etc.. Thanks again

Since ya don't have the clutch removal tool, like most of us, instead of hammering on the clutch, get a pair of vise grips and clamp on to the hub where the half moon cuts are. Clamp it tight then insert a screwdriver, large one, into the jaws of the vise grip so you can rotate it. When inserting rope use long enough So ya don't loose it into the cylinder. It's not a good idea to remove and install by impacting a screwdriver or anything against the hub at the wings, it can cause the clutch wings to break at that moment or sometime when using it.

Thanks for the video. Got my assembly off waiting for new one to be delivered. Ol bessy lives another day. Oh this is same clutch assembly as on my Husqvarna E 142. Figured I'd throw that out there.

Hello, I have a few questions about this item, 1st will it work with a 050 .325 72 DL Husqvarna Bar & Blade? I want to convert my Poulan Chainsaw to use the better blade & my drum is a lil chewed up due to the chain not fitting on the parts I purchased to fit the bar & blades. Thanks so much

Quickest and easiest way I have found to remove the clutch is to use a clutch removal tool and an impact driver that way you don't need a piston stop.

@@FernbarkFrist can i ask. Ive taken the sprocket off as per your instructions but you don't mention the pin bearing. Mine was jammed inside the old sprocket. Its not been off in 25 years. The sprocket is slightly worn but I'm replacing it. The pin bearing ... should that be tight or snug to easy push through the sprocket.

BTW, may I add that if you see those grooves on the sprocket they're caused from running your saw with a loose chain.

No it's not the grooves in the sprocket are simply wear marks from chain drive links that develop over time with use. Having improper chain tension either too tight or too loose can wear the sprocket out faster but it will develop those grooves regardless.
@joesshop3622

@@johnnorris1227 I'm sorry, but I beg to differ sir. My saws do not have that problem on any of the 4 big or small, old or new. Not even the 65cc Dhalmar from the early 80's has issues. Its completely about the tension not the time IMHO... A loose chain can do that in no time and I've seen it several times on new saws. Most folks almost take an attitude at continually adjusting a new chain so they run it crazy loose instead. Also when you use a screwdriver lay it down against the outer portion of the clutch for max torque and so the flat of the blade is against the flat of the clutch to transfer 100% the impacting load much better. Easier on the sharp clutch edge and better impact transmission for its faster removal.

@FernbarkFrist
@FernbarkFrist 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think they should have to struggle at all. I think it should be reasonably priced. At what I make an hour, it takes a full day of labor to pay for a sprocket swap at the dealer. Now who is struggling? It took twenty minutes of watching videos to learn, and ten minutes to perform the swap. This is easier than changing the oil in your car, how much does that cost?

Seems like you could buy a bolt threaded the same as the plug for a couple bucks or so. That would be cool since most saws are the same size thread. My stepson's cousin has my saw & case in his storage shed. Those two guys had a Doctor's property to clean up, so fixing the one saw was part of the deal but, that was last month & $2,500 ago, with no fixed saw. With that being said, I better get my saw back & just do it myself. Thanks for the video upload, I've never done this before so it's something I can handle but I am gonna look for a bolt in my parts bins, I should have one that size.....
@FernbarkFrist

Putting an extended bolt into the spark plug hole is a good way to punch a hole into your piston, then you'll have to buy a new chainsaw. Either use a rope or get the specific tool for removing the clutch assembly.

The rope trick is also used on dirtbikes to remove the flywheel, trick is you have to feed it in only when the piston is almost at the top of it's stroke, otherwise being a 2-stroke it risks falling into an intake or exhaust port. You also have to confirm in what direction will the crank will be turning (while loosening the hub) so that the piston isn't moving away but rather towards the top of it's stroke.
