I wish I'd found this video years ago. I've gone through two fans since 2015 on a Baxi Solo 2 (pile of junk boiler). Of course I paid an emergency repair guy a small fortune due to it being in the Winter and I was over a barrel. I watched the second guy strip the boiler and thought "Is that it? I could have done that". My fan has just started making the tell tale noises that mean it'll die soon so I've ordered some 626 bearings to fix the old fan I kept. I'm having a combi boiler fitted in three weeks so if the fan dies before then I'll change it myself. Thanks for the upload 👍

Thanks mate, that's saved me a bit of money. I dropped some oil onto the bearings and the fan started and the boiler fired up. So that confirmed that it was the fan that was the problem. So I've ordered a new fan off ebay. Thanks again.

Hi Grahame, do you think it is fan and not faulty ignition or PCB, right? The boiler light is on - hence I think it is not PCB. I was noticing the fan light would show before Pilot and Burner light.

Saved us on the coldest day of the year... thanks mate. One advisory for anyone else doing this.. or indeed anyone with a gas boiler. Fit a CO alarm in or near the boiler cupboard. It'll tell you if you've not sealed it again properly :)...(UNLIKELY but hey, life is not cheap)

Good video, my boiler fan was noisy and finally stopped working this week, after watching this video, I ordered a replacement of ebay for £40...my boiler model is Ideal classic FF250 1)Turned mains off 2) Turned boiler switch off 3) Removed the cover by undoing 2 long screws inside the front flap, one on either side and two screws on top of the boiler 4) Pull the case towards you and then upwards and it comes off easily and you will see the fan sitting on top of the heater block 5) Take photos of all the pipes and the connectors before so you remember where they go when reconnecting the new part, having taken the photos remove the two rubber tubes pipes on side and one at the back (not shown in video) Also remove the connectors (noting how they are wired (take a photo or write them down so you can remember how to do them for the new fan) 5) Undo the nuts of the two long locking bars in front as shown in the video 6) That leaves one nut or the screw at the back, in my case it was a philips screw, as this is located directly below the flue pipe with limited clearance it can be difficult to remove as there is hardly any space to put a bendy screw driver and turn it (if its a ratchet nut then it is probably easier) The only way I could undo this was to remover the flue pipe by undoing it from outside the wall, it came off really easily (15mins job) Once flue pipe was out of the way the nut/screw was easy to access and to remove. 7) Having undone the front bar nuts and the screw at the back lift up the metal housing the fan sits on and remove it. Turn it upside down and you will see the 3 screws fixing the fan to the housing. 8) The replacement fan assembly came with new screws that fitted perfectly (keep the old ones handy just in case) 9) Fit the new assembly, ensuring orientation is correct so the flue pipe fits correctly once refitted 10) Refitting is reverse of above, once the housing is back ensure you do up the two long bars at front and the screw at the pack so the assembly is nice and tight before refitting the flue pipe, then do up the connectors and the rubber/tube pipes. Job done, I am a competent diy person, the whole process took approx 90 mins, I had never done this before and found it was really easy to do. There is no tempering with gas, the gas safe guys quoted £200/250 to do the same with caveat that it can be a big job and the total cost could be more!!! They buy the part for under £50 and put a markup and £40/50 an hour labour...one even said the flu pipe will need cutting and it could be that I need a new boiler and cost can run into thousands of ££££

Thanks, Our boiler went tonight, fan makes crunching sound then stops. Spin the fan with a screwdriver, and then turn it all back on and it works for 5 mins. Got replacement for £30 and this video will help alot until we get a replacement boiler. Could work out how to replace the fan, wasnt sure if it had welded itself to the metal bottom after 16yrs of use.

Great video mate, i had myself all ready to go out and buy 1 of these, anyway i pulled the cover off started the boiler only for the fan to work. So plan B went into the atticonly to find that the ball cock had jammed and was not releasing any water, gave it a quick knock it filled the tank back up turned the boiler back on and all good.

I changed my own Fan on my Ideal classic se12 ff , it was easy enough, I did however replace the flue seal as it looked a bit shoddy, Then last month my pressure air switch failed and that was an even easier fix, as you say they are good boilers , mine is 11 yrs old, fan broke at 10 yrs old and pressure switch at 11 yrs old,

You obviously don’t realise how much money it costs us gas engineers to be legal! You are breaking the law by working on a flue system! Just saying.
@generaluploads9649
@generaluploads9649 Жыл бұрын
It's legal if you can prove competency if required, especially if you are touching any gas fitting. Changing an electrical assembly like a fan, is less concerning. Obviously you need to weigh up whether you can be sure that you will not, in doing work on any gas "fitting", put yourself in such a position whereby you need to stand in front of a court to prove competency. If you are 100% sure that you will be able to prove your knowledge of gas combustion, flame pictures, ventilation requirements and ALL the regulations involved etc then you should be OK. Otherwise you take the chance at your own risk. It's also worth bearing in mind that the ultimate responsibility for the gas appliances in the home falls with the HOMEOWNER.

Brilliant, amazing and awesome and I am not one that is easily pleased. I am in the exact same position and you just solved a problem for me that I encountered and was thinking of calling the plumber. Hate doing that! If you have a link for the bearing kit, that would make my month! Much appreciated.

Got mine from Ebay - a 2 pack which is useful as they tend to go every 5 years. This is on a 20 YO FF260 still going strong. Complete fans are now £20 and most other common spares for the classic are cheap as chips.

I avoid need to change fan by injecting WD40 into the top and bottom bearings twice a year, only takes minutes. First failure and a plumber changed the unit. When that failed another plumber gave me the above trick, been working like that for years now.

Thanks for this very useful video, just one question though - the fan sits on top of an aluminium box and it looks as though the whole thing has to be removed, but does this break any seals at the bottom of the box? If so how should it be reseated? Also where the fan outlet joins and is screwed to the exhaust pipe - does that need sealing in some way? Hopefully someone can advise me on this as I plan to replace my Ideal Classic fan as I’ve just been quoted £270 by my local gas company! Many thanks

I could be wrong but I think it’s combustion chamber and if that’s being opened ideally it should be sealed again
