It's a good idea to clean inside the burner tubes if possible, because debris inside (rust, bug caucuses, etc.) can come flying out of the burners and puncture the replacement mantels. I pressurize the lantern prior to burning off the new mantles because they're extra fragile until fully baked.

Have 2 of these. One single mantle and a dual. The best things ever! Now I have the need to go fishing at the creek. Thank you for posting.

Do you find the dual mantle to be much brighter than single?
@brngrofdeth Жыл бұрын
@@barbarab202 Apologies for the late reply. The dual is significantly brighter. Will use more fuel but turned down low, I find it emits more light than a medium lit single mantle lantern. I like the dual much better to be honest.

I've been looking for these since realizing how useful and reliable they are. I see them at garage sales more often than thrift stores, but they are definitely out there. Everyone's grandpa had one (back when men owned useful stuff), so you just have to wait for the kids to clean out the garage and get rid of it.

I'm 65 this brings back fond memories of many nights spend in the woods or near the river. They were always reliable.

Replace with a leather cup, the new lanterns from the early 90's on come standard with a neoprene cup that are garbage and wear out quickly.

Still the best piece of gear to have in a winter power outage. I don't care what they say, but no battery operated lantern or noisy gas guzzling generator or flashlight will give you close to 3000 lumens of light and 3000BTU of heat for up to 14 hours with just 16oz of fuel ! This is a 288A dual mantle lantern which is rare in Canada, but popular in the US. Canada has the single mantle 286A which I like better in a zombie apocalypse and will also burn regular unleaded gas (RUG) if you are in a bind.

have yet to see one of these in a thrift store, this was our main camp light when I was a kid camping with the family, might have to be on the hunt for one, my dad used a liquid fuel of some kind, can't remember what it was
@Iridium2426 жыл бұрын
Yeah I got lucky on that. They had another one too, the one that sits on the one pound propane tank, the top of that that one looked the same as this one, but I wanted one that used multi fuel and not just propane tanks, also that one was 14 bucks and this was 8. Its a great little lantern. Oh and the fuel for it is white gas Thanks!
@etow80346 жыл бұрын
The fuel is naphtha aka Coleman Camp Fuel or white gas. The newer models like the 286A and 288A will also burn regular unleaded gasoline and will also burn kerosene if you have the know how.

Aside from mantles, about the only other thing that cause a problem is the generator. Easy and inexpensive to replace, but you'll be doing mantles again, as it's the brass tube that runs between them. For those with no experience, think fuel vaporizer, because that's it's function. The stoves, that's the only part that will ever fail.
@Iridium2426 жыл бұрын
Good to know, I have rebuilt old Coleman stoves before so it should not be that difficult should I need to replace that. Thanks for watching!

I wasn't watching too close, but I believe you tied an overhand knot twice.

Thanks, yeah I am horrible with knots, I mean I can tie them but have no idea what they are called. I need to read up some on making knots

The old mantels were radioactive
@Iridium2426 жыл бұрын
I heard that, not anymore, I was thinking it would be an easy way to test my rad meter, but they have not had any radiation in them for ages now. Thanks for watching!

The old ones were made from thorium dioxide and the new ones from yttrium oxide. Just don't inhale the fumes when you are burn setting them in. The thorium dioxide mantles are still made under contract for the Amish communities and are still the best in terms of a whiter light.
