An excellent and timely video. Nice job. The motor on my splitter just went kaputz and I checked out the prices of new ones and Harbor Freight came to mind. About a year ago I bought one and it started first pull and is still running fine. Great kids too. I helped my dad out when I was about that age. He was at work and I decided to help him out by taking out a spark plug on his old yard work truck by putting sand in a spark plug hole. I remember my mother pointing at the hole and talking to him. The old engine was gone shortly afterwards.

I love how u have ur children helping/ learning but I really hope that u don’t ever leave a power tool plugged or with batteries in it, just laying around and one of those kids getting their hands on it and getting hurt. Please always take that extra second to make sure u are not walking away/ turning ur back and leaving ur kids alone with something that is on.

That part on the end of the driveshaft is called a lovejoy coupler.

I need to replace mine too :( I think removing the matching joint before removing the motor could have helped - update: I just removed the old Honda motor last night, wow what a breeze thanks for the video, I have 2 grandkids I think can help me with the replacement, one is 6 one is 2 :) anyway I removed the pump connection from the engine shaft, my engine was seized up 😢 so getting to the set screw was a pain but I got it, got my impact and the coupler came right off, no damage no issue. thanks again for sharing !

Could have taken off the lovejoy with a medium gearpuller. Replaced my vertical engine and only had to put spacers to install.

I need to move back just to save you from mechanical woes... torch not for cutting, but heating the coupler would have let it slide off the shaft (assuming you tried the spray...) or any 2-3 jaw puller... Now that I own a rusty Chevy I don't mess around with stuck rusty parts. Break it until it's fixed!

Yes, I mess with that thing for a while I sprayed it but didn't have a torch.

Have you figured out yet that you need a rubber spider between the jaw connectors that is why there was a space

No not yet. :-/

Some of those connections do require a piece of rubber that fits in between and acts like a shock absorber while others don't have the space. And also I can't believe you pounded it on and bought a new one.

I recently replaced my engine and I managed to get the part of the old shaft and put it on the new one but while getting it on the new one I used a bit of grease to prevent ceasing up.

Go back to the John Deere dealer and get that rubber spider. If you don't you will be replacing those drive couplers soon. These act as a damper and keep metal from rubbing against metal.

Could not believe this guy! No WD-40 or Blaster, no Gear Puller and, while apparently having access to the Internet, didn't bother researching before attempting an engine swap! Watched him pounding on that coupler in disbelief.

Yeah I tend to agree, not getting the part off and reusing it and using a bit of grease to help prevent it ceasing up
