Detailed video of how to replace the oil pan on a 2000 Honda Odyssey. I cover everything from start to finish in detail so even someone not very mechanically inclined could handle this.
You can do this entire procedure at home with just a few tools and a set of ramps to pull the vehicle up on.
Reasons You May Need to Do This:
Oil leaking from damaged oil pan
Stripped oil drain bolt

Thanks for this. Tip for removing the engine mount is a must. There is very little room to remove the oil pan. Putting it in with Hondabond is messy too. I unbolted the exhaust from the header, unplugged the O2 sensors and dropped the whole exhaust going back (2 rubber hangers) vs trying to undo the cat converters. Wasn't worth fighting the MN rust. Took about 3 hrs laying on my back.

Thanks for the helpful video. As an additional tip, I loosened the front engine mount, too, on my 2002 Odyssey. It helped get the engine up just a little higher for removal of the old pan and installing the new. I also changed the rear motor mount while the exhaust was off. Couldn't have done it without this video. Thanks, again.

Great Video. I have a 2006 Odyssey....basically the same, but the differences are that the front exhaust pipe doesn't have the sensor on it (they are on the section above the flanges), and the motor doesn't have to be lifted to remove/replace the oil pan. I did have a heck of a time with the exhaust nuts, even with the Blaster pre-soak...but it was OK. Need a 14mm 6-point socket (12-pt rounded the nuts, and I had to use an extractor tool). You should have mentioned the gaskets for the flanges....mine used a ring, instead of a gasket....though the gaskets are available though. Thanks for making this video...it was quite helpful.

I thank you because your video seriously made the difference. note: you don't need to remove the motor mount bolts for enough clearance, but you must raise the motor. also, in seating the oil pan, mine required a bit of pressure from bolting it on to get it to sit perfectly and I recommend putting the transmission bolts in first to help align. you could edit the video to be a bit shorter but it really solved all problems. also I found it easier to remove the rear bolts of the cat convertor than the front.

Excellent video. Gives me confidence to attempt oil pump removal (includes the oil pan removal) to get to the timing idler pulley block thread. Doing a timing belt change on my 2003 Odyssey, I stripped the timing idler pulley block thread, torqueing to spec 33 ft./lb. Go figure. The bolt goes first through the oil pump corpus before threading into the block. Another idea I have is to attempt installing a Heli coil without removing the oil pump. But that will require tapping thread into the oil pump hole and I am not sure both holes' centers are on the same line for the purpose of tapping thread.

I agree, Hondabond is the ONLY sealant recommended for this, I'm sure this Permatex product is fine, and I use their stuff everywhere, but I would not take a chance on this job. Once you use the Honda product, you will want to use it on other critical applications.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 8 жыл бұрын
+Al S I am sure the Hondabond is great and I certainly am not going to argue that the Permatex is better but I have been using Permatex products for over 20 years and never had them fail. They are tested to meet OEM specifications and they were around a long time before Honda or Hondabond even existed. I doubt you will go wrong using either produce and I certainly never have. Thanks for watching.

clint don't use the plastic rhino ramps. just google rhino ramp failures or something like that and you will be scared to use them. better to jack your car from the front and put the tires on 2 pieces of 2x12 bolted together, make it really wide and screw 2x4 at both ends to chock the wheels. just google diy car ramps and wood cribbing. wood has a high strength, they use it to make cribbing for monster equipment that weigh probably tens of thousands of pounds

Thanks for sharing man. From now on, jack stands only. That's crazy scary.
@eksine
@eksine 8 жыл бұрын
Clint Holland Yeah good thing I lost my Rhino ramps, I was doing the same thing as you. I actually trust wood planks under the tires more than jack stands, jack stands can fail too. If I have to use jack stands or any support I always use my rule of backups. put a jack on the front towing hook but take most of the weight off the jack to not strain it and also put wood plank under the tires. If I have to take tires off I would use jack stands, the jack and put the wheels under the corners so I have 2 backups. Your life is not replaceable. I never rely on just 1 thing.

So, three tips. 1. Those are not 9/16 bolts. They're 14 millimeters. Use the correct size sockets people. You'll save your bolts and yourselves a lot of headache. 2. DO NOT remove the motor mount bolts completely. Back then out enough to raise the engine without removing them completely. It'll keep them lined up through the entire job. 3. For the love of God, put anti-seize on those exhaust bolts. The next guy to take them out will thank you. And I don't don't using a 3/8 ratchet on the exhaust or the motor mount bolts. Use a 1/2; don't break your tools before you even get started.

Cool video. Why not just say 8 foot lbs of torque though? There is a possibility some people might not catch that small but very important detail and then realize that the loud crack was not in fact the torque wrench but the bolt breaking off in the bottom of the engine.... hypothetically of course. Definitely asking for a friend
