@@NSC-Modz Do you have any resources on how to properly diagnose YLOD's? If they aren't caused by these capacitors, what are the other reasons and are they "easily" fixable? (Not that I consider the capacitors replacement easy considering I don't know how to solder!)
@NSC-Modz

@@phylum8975 if it had not happen because a overheating, than its mostly because the NEC's ;) If the fan from your PS3 was running to fast, than it was overheating.
@Keiuran
@Keiuran 4 жыл бұрын
There's really no need to use 6.3V caps, the NECs are already over rated by almost 100% at 2.5V (PS3 Cell and RSX use 1.3 - 0.9V). Just make sure to use low ESR (6-9 mOhm or below) caps to match the original spec of the NEC/TOKIN caps. Both 330uF or 470uF should be fine if the ESR is in spec, but bigger might be better here to account for any future degradation over time.
@NSC-Modz

right, but booth works great, a lot peoples already used those with 6.3v ;) But it´s like u say, 2.5v is fully enough.

I watched a few videos from NSC on the PS3 capacitor replacement technique he uses and successfully fixed one of my old PS3s two days ago. I thought I was decent at using a reflow gun and decided to ignore the heating of the board with the grill on the bottom. I ended up burning two pads. The repair was a success because luckily the pads I burn were negative rails. I just fiber pen scratched to copper as he explains and it worked. Two things I will remember next time that NSC says over and over in his videos: 1: work clean! (Take your time and be neat) 2: if you have skills like me...(he’s basically saying he has practiced a lot and is good. You aren’t good if you haven’t practiced a lot.) Hi, great video and nice clean job. I've done a fair whack of electronics in the past and find it very difficult to read through a lot of the forum posts without cringing... Looking at the pictures of some of the solder jobs actually makes me feel physically sick. Few questions; Firstly, does it still work? Lots of information out there, very little results. Did you do all the caps at once? Forum recommends doing one by one, my mind says if they're rubbish caps, get them all out at once. Less opening/closing. Lastly, the link for the capacitor is broken. Do you have part no. for the ones you used? Sorry to direct all these questions at you but I really can't pay attention to people that do the stuff I've seen on the forums

I've done this successfully many times but sometimes have a problem desoldering a component near the NEC tokin capacitor and want to know a good way to avoid doing that.. sometimes I successfully can resolder that but usually they are so small that it is a pain or impossible to do. It is generally harder for me to remove the older ones(without getting something near it) then it is to solder new ones on.

Need help Regarding Fat PAL PS3 60GB model so I have a Problem I hadn’t used my PS3 fat in 3 months but yesterday I booted it up and was playing for 1 hour and a half (meanwhile this darn AC was on in the same room in the background) and turned it off for about 10 minutes before turning it back on and 3 seconds into the boot up screen and I turned off my AC and At this exact moment my Ps3 shutdown for some reason and I panicked and it started doing this exact red light of death and won’t turn on anymore. So I’m guessing this might be a power supply issue🤔if not then I’ll be really depressed. “Retro” games and old games are really rare in my country and eBay died 2 years ago here so getting it repaired might be next to impossible as there is no one trustworthy here. I found this PS3 Fat a year ago on my local craigslist by a stroke of luck! And bought it for $130. It’s always really dusty inside(and it was at the time of purchase too) so I cleaned off as much dust as I could although I also had CFW So I turned up the fan speed so the temps don’t go higher than 61C. I hope my PS3 isn’t dead. 😨🥶 reddit.com/link/pz204h/video/21595v2n4sq71/player My final Question is : Can a 17-year-old teenager like me still do this? Even if I have never had any soldiering experience before because all I have ever done is reapply a new thermal paste before.

Thanks for this great video. If I've removed all the necs/tokins like you on this same side of the board (and didn't touch the necs/tokins on GPU/CPU side), do I need to use a high gauge wire to bridge positive to positive? (step 5 on PSX-place guide)

As i have read, if you take out both NEC's, then yes, but you can always test without, it will not get destroyed just because u did not used the bridge, the only thing it will happen is that your ps3 will not start, if it didn't start, you will need the bridge ;)

Hello, not sure if you still have the PS3 but does it still work with these capacitors? I have a PHAT 40GB model that's got the YLOD. I was planning on doing something like this myself just to see if I can do it, and then try to put CFW on it (I have got a PS3 slim to replace it). The issue is that I've never desoldered a chip before and worried about making a mess.

As long as it's not overheating and not YLOD, then yes, replacing the NEC/TOKIN can resolve this. It means that some of them have already failed and are not providing enough power to the CELL or RSX.

Hello, my PS3 fat CECHL04 started YLOD'ing when I start the gameplay part of any game. It did it once in each game session, then the 2nd attempt allowed me to play freely. Since this became frequent, I opened the console, cleaned it (never done it before, in 10 years of having it), reapplied thermal paste and now I can play just 5 to 10 mins until it turns off by itself. 3 beeps, YLOD appears and then blinks red permanently. Could this be a capacitor issue or something else? Please reply, I'm trying to avoid sending my console to Sony in trade of a 100€ replacement PS3 slim, idk what to do now since local shops refuse to try to fix it, they say it's gonna be dead for good...

Great video mr NSC :) Thank you. I have a question about the number of the tantalums: there is an article on reddit where someone mentions: "You need to make sure the total capacitance of a NEC tokin is met when replacing it. This would be 1200uF per nec tokin for a ps3 phat - either 4x330uF or 3x470uF." I am little confused now :) Why are you using 4 pcs 470uF on one Nec/Tokin place? Mabye 3 pcs should be enought right? And Kyle Collins mentioned here : "low ESR (6-9 mOhm or below) ".. is this important? Thank you if you can answer :)
@NSC-Modz
@NSC-Modz 3 жыл бұрын

@@NSC-Modz Thank you for the reply. My question is : every Nec TOkin is separately responisble for like booting? or we can count them together? Sorry if I consufed you , here is the video about the 2-4 solution:) kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5fCf5iul6dkf9U and another questioN: the tantalum's low ESR (6-9 mOhm or below) is important?
