Step by Step!
Today I'll be showing you the easiest way to replace a starter on a Walker MT GHS commercial zero turn riding mower.
Doing it this way won't require the removal of the mower deck, blower housing or the engine itself.
However, we will be loosening the engine so we can tilt it back, to have enough room to remove and replace the starter.
Starter: Kohler 25-098-24-S (I bought an OEM Kohler starter).
The latest Kohler 25-098-24-S Starter Replaces the older 25-098-20-S and 25-098-21-S starters.
Links to buy one on Amazon: amzn.to/3p1UhiL or amzn.to/3N5uKx4 (Use aftermarket at your own risk).
Walker Manuals: www.walker.com/manuals/
You can do this repair with some basic hand tools, and a socket set.
10mm, 7/16", 13mm, 14mm and 19mm sockets will be needed, as well as a philips head screwdriver and possibly a small propane torch or some penetrating oil if the exhaust manifold studs/nuts are seized.
This repair can be done in under 2 hours if everything comes apart easily.
You may want to schedule a bit of extra time for heating seized nuts/bolts or to clean the cooling fins on the cylinder heads. As well as other various things, like fixing broken wiring, and ordering/replacing a broken hydrostatic fan (as shown in this video).

Nice video and agree on OEM replacement. Based on your customer description of symptoms that sounds like the issue I am experiencing. This integral design really blows. Nice tip on cleaning the grounds. I have this same Walker and the starter is not engaging all of the time and it's getting worse. When it does engage, the engine fires right up. Thanks.

As they say in the Ukraine now that is using your kapusta, well done on this one. 100% correct OEM is the only way to go with this much work needed to remove and replace. Number one tool in the shop comes to the rescue again eh? That Mini Venom Induction Gun is a life saver, i have used it a number of times myself. I wonder if the Big Dog Henry Murawski has one of these?

I do small engine repair too, you can replace starter without taking that bracket off above the muffler, or without taking muffler off.you have justtttt enough room. Its a little harder but saves me probably about 20 min. Putting that bracket back on can be a pain sometimes. Its been a gamechanger. Im payed commission so finding this out made one of my most hated jobs into one of my favorite with time vs $$.
@EliminatorPerformance

Does it take longer because there's less room? This was fairly easy for me and it gives you plenty of room, I hate struggling lol

@EliminatorPerformance it takes less time without taking the bracket off, alot of those can be a pain especially on older models where i guess the frame stretches, that bracket doesnt go back on easy. I have replaced starters in 45 minutes on these things

@@EliminatorPerformancei have struggled putting that bar on for 30 min before lol some go on easy, but others are hell to put back on just depends i guess. I used to have to put a ratchet strap on frame under the hopper to somewhere near front wheels to move it closer so bar bolt holes would line up, then a strap broke hit me in the face chipped my cheekbone so i tried without taking bar off next time and found i had just enough room and made job way faster

It's actually backwards so I'm glad we're changing it out, the parts diagram shows the fins should be the opposite direction, so I'm assuming someones changed it before and installed the wrong one (they're clockwise on the right side and counterclockwise on the left!).

Yes, people say they're high maintenance but the reality is they're high mileage (mostly commerical units used all day for an entire season) so obviously they will require lots of maintenance and repairs. They can be a pain to work on though.

Hey man, just started getting into your vids and I got a quick question for you. I was at the brother in-laws today helping him get his cub cadet with a 24hp kohler going. He had left it outside without the hood on since last season. We had to remove and unseize the starter to get it to spin and then we could start cranking the motor. We got it running, had to run it on choke for around 5 mins but then it ran without choke. It would just die when engaging the blades so I drove it full speed and then engaged them and the engine knocked pretty bad and it never ramped back up to speed. The gas smelled like old bad gas, kinda like turpentine, we all know the smell. Have you ever seen one with bad gas knock under load? After it was up to temp it seemed to run ok and even idled, but whenever you engage the blades it labors and knocks. Just wondering if you've seen that before. We drained the tank and I told him to put some fresh gas in it. Thanks.
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Жыл бұрын
Yes, either dump in a bottle or 2 of octane boost or drain and change it for some fresh fuel. I had one that would do the same, idle just fine, drive around, soon as you engage the PTO clutch and put the engine under load it would run like crap. Customer said it was year old fuel.

Basically his videos are not about himself, all about the repair with good angle shots to properly inform the viewer so it saves them time and money if they wish to repair it on their own. As i always like to pay it forward pass on the word to subscribe to two others and have them do the same. Thanks from the OLD MAN at EP. @@waynestefinashen239 I did subscribe. And the plot thickens since my question. I was back out there today and it ran much better with fresh fuel but still way underpowered. Pulled the spark plug wires and found it was only running on one cylinder. Checked spark on the cylinder that was not hitting and it had strong spark, put new plugs in and still had a miss on that cylinder. I decided that since I didn't have my compression tester with me the next logical thing to do was pop the valve cover and oh boy.... Bottom (exhaust) rocker stud had come loose and the top (intake) was still tight but had a significantly bent pushrod, both pushrods were off their rockers. What I gathered is that the exhaust rocker stud came loose first, you could see the rocker nut imprint on the valve cover, and then the pushrod for the exhaust kicked out. Then, with no way to exhaust pressure, the intake had to push against and bunch of cylinder pressure and bent the pushrod. We straightened the intake pushrod out between two boards with a hammer and got it mostly straight, reinstalled and I set the valves by feel and then it took off and ran on both cylinders. Rocker stud threads are OK so the plan now is two new pushrods and the guide plate that actually got bent from the rocker snapping back when the pushrod kicked out, and it's off to the races. Oh, and im gonna loctite the studs in. Thanks for your help along the way!

@waynestefinashen239
@waynestefinashen239 Жыл бұрын
Without a model number i would only be guessing but look at the chain links and there usually is a stamped number that identifies the chain like 45 for example, Once you have this it is only a matter of buying the same numbered chain and master link kit for repair or replacement.

Please, please, please make a video on how to put a carburetor that goes on a 50cc motor together. I bought this motor to go on a bicycle. I've never done anything like this, and the instructions are trash. I have no idea if I'm doing it correctly. I've scoured the internet and have seen tons of comments from others in my position. Actually, your viewers might love to see you motorize a bicycle. A kit on Amazon is only about $100. $160 for a 100cc. All other videos on this skip parts that those who aren't mechanically inclined need. Sorry for the lengthy comment. I'll subscribe because your channel may be helpful. Thanks so much!

Can that starter type be energized by a remote solenoid?
@EliminatorPerformance
@EliminatorPerformance Жыл бұрын
That's a great question but I have no idea, they call these shift start solenoid starters and the solenoid is built into them. I'm sure it would be possible to rig up an external solenoid, then hook battery positive to that and the lead off that to the starter side hookup.

@Wayne Stefinashen last july I started to install new cam in one of my engines. Then my neighbour blew his so I put mine in his engine. I think bo was November then and both cdn and Michigan repairclinic would be 180 cdn. I found one in England but they didn't normally ship to canada. So my son's sister in law lives in England. I shipped to her and she shipped to me. 35 cdn, but even with that total landed cost to me was 122cdn. Unfortunately I checked a week ago and they had none.
