thanks for the vid, i had the same project and managed to do it in only 1 home depot run, i decided to solder everything, no sharkbites. I already had to buy the tools to solder the top part so might as well do it all the right way and some money, sharkbites are like $7 and less reliable vs a 70cent coppler coupler. I've done alot of micro soldering for electronics, same concept just bigger and more heat. flux is your friend and clean surfaces, always use all the prep tools.

I'm definitely not a plumber and sweated FIP fittings to my 1/2" copper pipe and thought the threads (straight cut) were meant to screw into the fitting. Obviously, that didn't work out for me and it leaked a bit, but considering that this was completely wrong it amazingly sealed up pretty good, just not good enough. I "almost" tried inserting the pipe into the bottom of the valve and soldering it but thought the female fitting was the issue. DUH. Your video was the only one that I found that made the whole thing make sense. So I made a stupid mistake initially, but now know the right way to correct this. The only difference I made was to sweat a couple of couplings to connect my new connections to the old. Thanks so much for sharing this!

Had someone do this install just as you have, except he forgot to put the plastic flanges underneath to snug everything up. I noticed it when it was loose in the box and took it apart to tighten it up. Is that a huge problem? I notice the pipe moves quite a bit while it's washing

Sharkbyte fittings in enclosed walls is a no-no. They use a cheap rubber o-ring for a water seal. Chlorinated city water will eat that o-ring in no time. Should of sweated in a copper coupler. Even better put a T in and a solid piece of copper.
@amanberhe22012 жыл бұрын
Was thinking the same. Kind of surprised didn't use coupling fitting since he/she was soldering.

where do you use a quick connect?
@moonpiespotlight47596 жыл бұрын
I'd use one perhaps under a sink or in an open run inside a basement because I can visually inspect it. They could be perfectly fine but my experience with every sort of PTC fitting made is that they fail before the mainline. So I don't trust them.

@arcadion4484 жыл бұрын
Such an odd strategy, why solder to the shutoff valve but then use SharkBite to connect to the old pipe? SharkBite is not recommended to be behind a wall.
@curtisbme3 жыл бұрын
While I agree it is weird combo, as you can just use some torch resistant material to not burn the drywall if that is the concern, "SharkBite is not recommended to be behind a wall" is incorrect. It is approved by code and has been for a long time. Just many plumbers won't do it because it isn't what has done (and in part because it doesn't require skill to use so they may think it is beneath them).
@arcadion4483 жыл бұрын
@@curtisbme, SharkBite may be up to code, but it only has a 25 year warranty. That's why plumbers don't recommend using it behind a wall - you can't see the leak.
@curtisbme3 жыл бұрын
@@arcadion448 A product's warranty has little to nothing to do with expected life. And a warranty to a part does you no good as no part I'm aware of guarantees they will fix all the damage the failure caused. For example Uphonor's warranty is 'just' 25 years as well but no one expects their tubing to fail after that point (or really ever).
@arcadion4483 жыл бұрын
@@curtisbme, bad comparison. SharkBite's water tight seal come from their plastic O-Rings - which overtime is known to lose its effectiveness. Whereas Uponor's come from Pex-A's seal come from it's design to close and tighten back to its original form. Pex-A seal gets harder as time goes by, whereas SharkBite's O-Ring weakens over time. Hence why SharkBite isn't recommended to be used by plumbers inside a wall.
@curtisbme3 жыл бұрын
@@arcadion448 Your argument was that some plumbers don't like it because warranty was only 25 years. So what I gave you was 100% accurate comparison as to why that is false. Moving the bar doesn't make your previous comment valid. That is fine if you want to talk about materials but if you aren't showing the data it is speculative conjecture whether or not the materials difference will actually result in failure during the life of a home. And again SharkeBite IS recommended to be used by plumbers inside a wall. Go look at their site. Go see that it is approved by code. Go watch the hundred of videos by plumbers doing exactly this. Some plumbers don't recommend it, but it is false to attempt to make a blanket statement that no official body (that I'm aware of) has made.

What kind of connectors are you using at the end?
@danorion3693 жыл бұрын
those are shark bite connectors. well, sharkbite was the company that first designed it but there are lots of copy catters that may work as well as the technology isn't that crazy but nonetheless it's pretty genius and revolutionized plumbing in that soldering is no longer needed, at least no where near as much as it used to.

@chulachaser53214 жыл бұрын
@ Jhi1947 yes, crawling under houses sucks for sure. @ Kevin, there is a nut below the valve handle. Unscrew that and the guts will come out in one piece. Very simple. After that nut is loose, if the guts do not pull out, turn the handle to the left. 2 more tricks are, buy your replacement identical to the old valve and just replace the guts, then theres no need for any sweating. Lastly, only as a temporary fix, pull the guts out, then unscrew the Phillips head you will see holding the gasket, turn the gasket around, then reassemble the valve. This will give you some time to get to the supply house.
