Thank you Tom for the tutorial. I am working on a 2008 model kettle and the one touch rod was so over rusted I couldn't tell where the notch was to attempt to pull the rod out. Some WD-40, wire Bush and your video provided success even without seeing the notch. Appreciate your no frillz videos Tom!

Great work Tom. I did mine about a month ago on an 18+ year old Performer (been using a lot of lump, which leaves a lot of debris). Getting the old handle out was a pain, but after that and a brick to hold the blades down while inserting the new handle, it was pretty simple. Thanks for posting!

Had the same problem as you installing ,but great to have vent control back again ,mine lasted 12 years before replacement . Cutting through in oversized charcoal going through the vent slots is the biggest killer of the one touch cleaning system.

I'm a 65-year-old female with a 26" Weber Kettle and I just replaced the One Touch Cleaning System today all by myself. If you think it's hard on a 22" Weber, try it on a 26" Weber! *LOL* This took some ingenuity, but what I did was run string through the bottom of the handle holes of the blade system and then dropped the string through the bottom of the kettle to hold the blade system in place at the bottom of the kettle when I flipped the grill over to install the washer and handle to the underside of the kettle. This worked great!

The trick to replacing the 7444 is finding the right screwdriver. A screwdriver that will fit into the gap properly to allow you to torque the rod down to twist it.

Seems like you could reasonably just remove the old one, bend it back so it has better fitment, then just remount it. Edit: Just read your reply to the other guy. That makes sense. I think for my purposes I’ll just keep my old one and bend it back. Mine is about 3 years old, I think they probably still have some good life in em. Thanks for the video. It was helpful

I had a blade up like that so I bought a new kit and then bent the original back in place. I had a spare just in case I broke it. So far it’s holding its proper shape. I’m more careful to remember to do a complete sweep while things are still at temp. I think gunk got in there and hardened at ambient temp. When I went to start the grill next time is when I think I bent mine. Always do a complete sweep before letting the briquettes burn down or before you shut it down.

I just replaced the fins on my 18" Weber. Was an older model, with the big nut and thumb screw holding it together. Was assured this set up would work. Wonder if maybe the older kettles are a bit thicker ? Was an EXTREME pain to get the sweep handle started. I think my cussin cleaned out the kettle,,,,,,. It IS a little tight, especially compared to a new grill, but $20, and a little cussin, beats $120 for a new grill.

If anyone is still looking for help. I found that a paint can lid opener works well to get the rod out. Jam the tool under the rod and lift it up, turn the rod at same time. I also lightly tapped the middle piece to loosen rust.

@@TomHorsmanAmateurBBQ I find that the plastic scrapers from Lodge works great for cleaning the bowl. They’re used for cleaning cast iron, but have a rounded corner and also flexes to scrape the bowl nice and clean. Doesn’t scratch the Weber finish either.

Tom, I am just beginning to clean up my Weber Performer Deluxe. I picked it up use for $250 a couple of years ago. It was virtually brand new! That said, one of my "blade" of the cleaning system is now bent just like yours in the video. I have already cleaned out the bowl using a citrus based grill cleaner but it is not as clean as I am hoping for. What did you use to clean out your bowl, especially in the vent area? Thanks, Tom
