Great video - thank you very much. I did it yesterday and it took me 2 1/2 hours, following your detailed instructions. I really appreciate you listing the tools needed. It was pretty smooth - the worst part was cracking loose the over-torqued wheel nuts from the tire installers impact wrench!

This is a great demonstration of the basic process for the timing belt. Generally, you should take the extra steps of replacing the oil pump gasket and o-ring, the front crank seal, and the water pump. It's a false economy to skip these items. Also, if you choose to replace the cam seals, know that the adjustable cam pulley has an o-ring in it that is a common failure. The pulley is not inexpensive, but if the o-ring leaks oil will end up on the timing belt. No bueno.
@TonySims8885 жыл бұрын
Also, the adjustable cam pulley(s) can move, and the oil pressure can bleed off the cam position solenoid and the cam can move in relation to the adjustable pulley. There are locking tools that go in the other end of the head to hold the cams. If they move on you, expensive things make contact. Again, no bueno.

Got this, and the water pump done on my 2001 non-turbo, which was almost 40K overdue---first timing belt job ever, and took me over 7 hours. The old belt looked good, but the pulleys were definitely going; a good amount of grease was coming out of those bearings. My near-245K S60 is definitely happier. This video especially helped with the tensioner pulley segment. Thanks!

I really did enjoy your well made tutorial. I have one ammendment: in Volvo Vidas workshop manual the 3 positions of the belt tensioner stand for: cold-minus 20C, warm-20C, hot-50C ambient temperature. So it is best to set it to the middle position with a cold engine instead of the cold position. otherwise the tension applied will be too much.

+1A Auto Parts Went well. You might want to mention that on some cars, there is a cap covering the tensioner bolt head on the serpentine belt. I was stumped until I jacked the car overhead and saw that it's just a pressure fit cap. Otherwise your instructions were superbly detailed! Good on you! I do have an engine light on, I'm figuring it has to do with coolant level (I changed the water pump too so I believe the car is still burping itself.) If not, what could be the culprit? And how do I turn off the "Time for Regular Maintenance" message? (I tried the method in your other video but it didn't seem to work...)

Thank you for the great video. One of the first steps to completing this job is to remove the serpentine belt. For those Volvo owners that have a 2006 Volvo or older you just need a 14mm socket wrench or long-handled 14mm wrench to 'de-tension' the serpentine belt pulley in order to remove and install the serpentine belt. Starting with the 2007 model year XC70, Volvo engineers "designed-away" the simple 14mm fitting for the serpentine belt pulley tensioner. They "designed-in" a new T-60 Torx fitting into the serpentine belt pulley tensioner. 2007 model year and newer owners will need to buy a specialized tool for about $30. This will allow for them to remove and install the serpentine belt. Also, excellent advice to not remove the serpentine belt crankcase pulley (SBCP.) If you leave the SBCP in place it's more difficult to get the timing belt onto the crankcase timing belt gears but it's well worth the extra work. I worked from underneath the car while another mechanic worked from above and thru a push, pull and belt bending technique we were able to route the new timing belt onto the crankcase gear perfectly. Don't remove the SBCP unless you have the specialized tool that stabilizes the oscillation damper that's integrated into the SBCP.

Before buttoning it all up,and with any timing belt change,make sure to turn the engine over by hand a couple of times and check that the timing marks come back in sequence....if you do this it may save you a lot of work,if you don't and something isn't right you could have to do it all over at the least and at the worst you could bend the valves and...well you know👍

Both Serpentine and Timing Belt did not go back on as easy as you made it look. Any additional tips would be appreciated. What finally worked for me is regarding the timing belt was fitting it on everything except the idler and then taking the tension off and sliding it over the idler roller. At 11:21 that is what you appear to be doing, please confirm. With the serpentine belt I do not have a Volvo specific tool but used another serpentine belt tool and still had difficulty getting enough slack to pull the belt over the power steering pulley. I finally used a ratchet but it required a second person to help me out. Thank you for the video.

I take it the process is the same for a 2003 XC90 T6? Excellent vids by the way!

Excellent job! Thx for posting. How long did it actually take you and how long if you change the water pump too?
@1AAuto8 жыл бұрын
+Vikingdescendent If may take you a few hours to do the repair. If you have a service manual for the vehicle it may state how many hours it should take. If any of our viewers need to make this repair we carry the timing belt kit shown in this video on our website. Here's a link to them www.1aauto.com?KZbin&CTA%20Comment&ATony

I see the vvt is on intake side. My 99 XC70 is on exhaust side. Don't you have to advance the vvt full clockwise when putting belt on?

Is this the same procedure for a 2007 Volvo v70 cross country
@1AAuto7 жыл бұрын
+Shawn Marzullo It should be the same procedure. Here is a link to the timing belts that we carry for your vehicle, and also the auto repair videos that go with them. Hope this helps you out goo.gl/gE4cC8

How much different is doing this for a 2000 V70 2.4L (non-turbo)?
@1AAuto10 жыл бұрын
Other than any turbo components that may be in the way, it should may be a similar or the same procedure. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 866-403-3393

1A Auto Parts Thanks for the quick response! I'll let you know how it goes..

It is the same. I would also put away the coolant reservoir to get more space. Passing the new belt at 10:20 looks easy, but I found it to be quite fiddling.

You are so right between the 2 you can do it.

@punhoss7 жыл бұрын
aren't you supposed to do the water pump in conjunction with a timing belt?
@1AAuto7 жыл бұрын
+punhoss Yes, you can replace the water pump while you are in these if it is old and has a lot of miles on it. Hope this helps you out. 1aauto.com

What I'd like to know. Does every mechanic preforming this know that it has to be done exactly like you did it??? I need that done on my car but I'm afraid to get a bad mechanic who doesn't do this the way you did it.. Who do I take my 2004 V70 to?
@rebeltango3 жыл бұрын
look up indie shops that specialize in volvos, Ronald. Depending on where you are, there should be a few. Usually they also work on saabs and sometimes VW/BMW/Mercedes. You're better off with a european car specialist than any old mechanic, regardless.

Cam sprockets locking tool www.ipdusa.com/products/5127/109573-volvo-camshaft-locking-tool-ipd-109573-t850ct The original Volvo/Aisin pump can do 200,000 miles (or more) if using the right coolant. But many cars may have had the pump already replaced with a chinese one so look with a mirror for stamps like Aisin, GMB or Hepu (should be fine). You may also find inside a circle two digits - the year of manufacturing. All pumps have a small hole at the top, in case the bearing seal starts leaking, however even if it's not leaking a pump may still seize the bearing. While the belt if out, spin the pump by hand and feel it: if it spins very easily like you give it a kick and keeps spinning several times, it's getting worn, if it spins and feels like slight grabbing in some points, it's getting pretty worn, if it spins and feels like metal friction or slightly 'squeals' replace right away. A new pump will feel like it has 'grease' restriction when spinning, feels smooth and somehow 'heavy' to turn. The pump has 7 bolts, the rear ones cannot be reached with the socket, nor with the 3" extension. Try using a deep 10mm socket. Use some blue locktite on the water pump bolts to 13 ft-lb (17N-m). Tensioner center bolt torque to 15ft-lb (20N-m) - new tensioner model from mid 2004-on so look first at yours before ordering or check with the engine serial no on the side belt cover sticker. From 2004 on the serpentine tensioner may require a torx tool (see fcp site) blog.fcpeuro.com/replacing-the-water-pump-on-a-2001-volvo-s60-t5
