In this video I show how I change a VVT-I cam gear in a 2009 Toyota Corolla. Reason for this repair is a rattle noise at startup from the timing chain. This is a problem that most Toyota Corolla and other similar models with the 2zrfe engine may encounter. I initially installed two cheap Cam Gears that I purchased off of ebay. They were JUNK and did not solve the issue. I took the original gear apart and pinched the springs tighter and re-assembled. This did correct the issue.

THANKS AGAIN! I just got around to doing my sons corolla. I watched your video 10 times to make sure I was comfortable. I just replace the gear with the most updated one. God I hope they reengineered it! It’s was a little scary seeing those cams pop up when you take the last caps off. It did make the grinding noise the very first time I started it but I’ll wait and see if it does it after it sits. If the noise comes back..... it’s going to the grave with the noise! 10/21/19 update, no grinding noise so far so good.

The cam gear of the exaust was delayed by one point.I did everything as you did and arranged the gear of the camshaft and thank God and you I was able to solve it.The revolutions went down very well and it no longer ocilate as was doing,now stays stable in 680 rpm with out a/c and with a/c comes up a little up to 800 to 900 rpms thank you very much.

I recently purchased a used 2010 Matrix and I seem to have this problem with a couple seconds of a grinding noise after a cold start when the car has been sitting for awhile. I have read some people claim its a 3000-4000 dollar repair at a dealership and they have to completely remove the engine from the car and all that. Based on your video it seems to be a much simpler and hopefully much more affordable job to take care of. Thanks for posting.

I just completed this repair on my 2010 corolla with 150k miles. It took me about 4 hours and the video helped so much! The broken cam gear in my car was Toyota part number 130500T010 and I replaced it with part number 130500T050 at a cost of $215 from Toyota. I also replaced the valve cover gasket from advance auto. If your video views seemed to skyrocket over the past week or two that would be me. I watched this thing so many times to make sure I understood exactly what I was getting ready to do. It worked great. There was some work performed out of frame but it wasn't difficult to figure out. A couple things I noted along the way, releasing the tensioner is performed by rotating the crankshaft counterclock about 90deg until you hear it disengage the hook. I'm not sure what you did with the screwdriver except maybe disengage the hook manually. Also the torque value for the 13 cover screws is 7ft lbs. You saved me a ton of money and she purrs like a kitty. Hats off, I regret that I only have one upvote to give.

Oscar, to unlock the timing gear you need to use air pressure and electric tape trick. There are several videos here on KZbin that I found for references on how to do it for other installations I’ve done. At 23:03 you see me pull a screen filter out of the main cam cap. This system runs on oil pressure so you want to confirm it’s not clogged up. Good catch, your the first to ask me about that. Thanks again and just message me if you have any other questions.

I see there is a lip below that gear in the timing chain cover that help minimizing the risk, right? My motor is a 2ZR-E25W serial number. from 2011 corolla. I took apart the cam gear after removing it and found that one of the 4 cogs of the inner gear (the one directly fixed to the camshaft) had completely cracked through along its width. I believe that had allowed oil to completely drain out of that passage when sitting for a period of time, and the resulting lack of lubrication was the source of that cold-start noise. I had no choice but to purchase a new gear assembly to fix the problem but that took care of the issue. The problem was completely self contained within the assembly and doesnt have to be repaired (just irritating to listen to every coldstart.) I would guess the broken cog is the source of most cold start rattles

Thank God while my Rav was in shop getting diagnosed, I found a 10year 100,000 mile power train warranty it had. My cost is a $50 deductable. Car only had 57,000 miles and 6 months left on warranty.

Make sure your Bendix in your starter isn't hanging up before you people start pulling the cam gear. Sounds similar on cold starts. Was this intermittent on cold starts or did it make the ride of all the time?

Awesome video! Just what I was looking for. There are PLENTY of videos of cars with the cold start rattle but known showing how to replace the VVTI gear, especially on the 2009 Corolla like mine. Question, after you put the cam back in, do you install the tensioner then release the bungee cord? Or release the bungee then install the tensioner? I’m so paranoid that the chain is gonna jump off the crank sprocket if not enough tension. Thanks again.

Hey Bill, I’m so glad to hear that you appreciated this video!! The bungee cord can stay on until you install the tensioner. Up to you. I removed it before installing the tensioner because with the cam re-installed there wasn’t any slack on the chain between the two sprockets. I always rotate the engine at least two revolutions and double check the timing marks to confirm the chain didn’t move a tooth on the crank gear before installing the valve cover. When you do yours, just message me if you have any questions and I’ll be happy to help if I can. Thanks Tom

If I correctly understand what I saw was, set the gear assembly to the unlocked position, install and torque it on the cam then move it to the locked position before installing back in the head? Great video however a little commentary in the right spots would be a plus, thanks.

If the the rattle is 1/4 to 1/2 a second and definitely noticeable but not sharply loud... is it more of a nuisance and safe to keep going OR is it about to all let go and destroy the timing chain?

Great video. Thank you for the information. I have my timing cover off because of the startup rattle and wasn’t exactly sure what to replace. I am glad I read the comments and found that you recommended the Toyota replacement gear and gave a part number. I would have ordered it from RockAuto if I hadn’t seen that. Also I wouldn’t have known to unlock the cam gear before installing and I would have had to take it apart again so this video saved me hours of frusteration and now I have the confidence that the noise will be gone. Also I didn’t realize that you could pull the cam without removing the timing chain completely but since I’m in there I guess I’ll replace the chain and guide. Do you recommend replacing the tensioner or the VVT solenoid?

Backyard Bashing, Hi and thanks so much for sharing how this video helped. There are a few parts the TSB recommends to replace. If you pull up the TSB listed in the title it will have a parts list. The tensioner is one of the recommended parts to replace. Check with Toyota parts with your VIN to get the most up to date cam gear part number. Last time I checked it was the 13050-0t050. You can find these online rather than paying the dealer price. If you need any more info just let me know at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com. Thanks, Tom

Sanders Auto Solutions Okay thanks I’ll look it up. And when you say to get the most up to date cam gear are you going by the TSB or could there be a newer one since then?
@sandersautosolutions4246
@sandersautosolutions4246 3 жыл бұрын
Backyard Bashing, yes, there can be a newer one available than what the TSB lists. The cam gears get superseded with new ones and the part numbers don’t change on the TSB. I’ve seen a couple of the TSBs on the World Wide Web with the old part numbers. Unfortunately, sellers still offer the old superseded inventory.

Sanders Auto Solutions I looked up the part numbers on the TSB and found them all on ToyotaPartsDeal.com. When I found the cam gear it showed that the new part number was the one you gave me so I would assume that is still the newest. Thanks for all the info!

Thanks Tom, can I use a Cam gear from a 1zz on a 2zz? I think it shows same gear when I look up online. Can I just remove the cam bolts and cam on the intake side or do I need to remove bolts from intake and exhaust cams? Thanks
@sandersautosolutions4246
@sandersautosolutions4246 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Celicagt1zz, I couldn’t find info confirming that they are interchangeable. They do look very similar, but may be very different as well. Need to confirm that where the 1zz gears Dow pin for the camshaft and timing mark are in the exact same place as the 2zz’s. That way if it is installed you will know that your timing is true. Also confirm the oil port passages line up with the oil ports on the 2zz camshaft. I wouldn’t recommend it because without confirmed data you could damage your engine. If you do install it and it works I would like to hear about the results. On the camshaft bolts you will have to undo the intake and exhaust cams because the camshaft caps are one piece covering both cams. Thanks Tom

Hi Grant, you want to mark your timing chain to the timing mark on the exhaust cam gear and the intake cam gear. That way when you install the intake camshaft back in you line up both markings on the chain that you made to the timing markings on both the exhaust and intake cam gears. If you need any other information on this repair please let me know. I’ll be happy to assist. Thanks Tom

@sandersautosolutions4246
@sandersautosolutions4246 4 жыл бұрын
Grant Smerchanski, This repair can get very technical and deeper understanding into the workings of the VVT-I system is a must before taking this repair on. You can do this to reassure yourself, before removing your Intake VVTI Camshaft Gear you can line up the two dots on the face of the VVTi gear to confirm it is in the locked position before you mark your timing chain. That way when you install your new gear in the locked position you know your markings are 100% accurate. I didn’t get that technical because I knew that as long as I marked my chain on the factory scribed marks on the old gears and went back onto the factory scribed timing marks to the new gear that it would be right on for the new gear. Basically, if you bought a new timing chain, the chain comes with painted links to set the timing to the factory scribed marks on the gears. Doesn’t matter if the gear is locked or unlocked. Sorry, I hope I was able to answer your question and explain it. Very technical. If you need any repair data on the repair, you are welcome to email me at sandersautosolutions@gmail.com. Thanks, Tom

Mr. Sanders, after the new Cam gear is reattached to the camshaft and before reinstalling back in the head, do you need to unlock or lock the cam gear for timing mark purposes? Also, before reinstalling the timing chain tensioner, do you retract the plunger and lock in place with side mounted clip?
@sandersautosolutions4246
@sandersautosolutions4246 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ron, torque the cam gear in the unlocked position to the camshaft. Then move to the locked position before installing back into the head. For the tensioner, install it with the plunger locked all the way in. Once installed and ready for tension on the chain I used a long screwdriver to push in on the chain and chain guide to unlock the tensioner.

Mr. Sanders, today I got my camshaft and gear out of my engine head. I hand tightened the bolt in the unlocked cam gear position, but when I went to torque it to 40 foot lbs., the cam gear moved to the locked position. This happened to me twice. I was able to get it unlocked once by watching a KZbin video where a guy put black electrical tape around the holes on the cam and applied air to the hole for advance. But know I can't get the cam gear to unlockon the second try. I seen another video where the guy uses a different method. Hope it works. Anyways, any explanation why the cam gear went to the locked position while tightening the cam bolt? Only thing I can think of is perhaps my torque wrench maybe out of calibration and over torqued the bolt and caused it to move to the locked position.

Great video. I gave thumbs up! At about 19:15 you said you rebuilt the cam gear. If a new genuine Toyota cam gear is purchased, does it need to have any type of adjustment performed before it is fastened to the end of the cam shaft with that single bolt? Most importantly, is there a locating dowel pin on the end of that camshaft to ensure the new cam gear can be bolted on in one way only? (ie. You don’t rotate it slightly while the bolt on the end of the camshaft is being tightened?) Thanks!
@sandersautosolutions4246
@sandersautosolutions4246 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, thanks for the thumbs up! If you purchase a new cam gear it does have a dowel pin on the camshaft to install it. Install it in the unlocked position, torque it on, then move the gear to the locked position. One single bolt to secure it to the camshaft. There are lots of KZbin videos on how to unlock them. Good luck on your repair and if you have any questions I’ll try to help.
