You should always change both parts of the bearings together. It’s bad practice to reuse the old races, even if there like new, as they are matched perfectly to the taper bearing

Im no mechanic, but I have learnt a lot from various videos. * Don't use new bearings with old races, replace both at the same time, or keep both if in good condition. * You need to tighten the castle nut firmly with a wrench while turning the wheel, to preload the bearing, then back off, then finger tight or some low specific torque * Check for free play by firmly wiggling the wheel. I THINK that a very small amount of play is acceptable, and will tighten as it heats up on the road? I think it's often unavoidable too, because the split pin hole is rarely in just the right position. One video suggests sanding a small amount of the inside of the nut, if the position is not right. I guess a thin shim washer could work too. * Cleanliness is paramount. Clean the area first, don't work on a dusty/windy day. Use a metal dish to accept dirty parts. Clean off any rust or dirt from wheel, hub and axle mount before proceeding to eliminate chance of contamination. Have clean, lint-free cotton cloth in a clean dish to place cleaned parts on. Wash hands before final cleaning & greasing, or better use new gloves for final greasing & assembly. After cleaning wheel hubs thoroughly with rags, finish with brake cleaner. If reusing bearings, soak in clean solvent & finish with brake cleaner & place on lint-free cloth to dry before greasing. * Replace split pin with a new one, not worth the risk of losing a wheel

Good video mate. I know the cones were ok but I'd have replaced them while the wheel is off. If your new bearing gets a bit of salt water in them and you're towing at speed the old races can lose their hardened surface. That marine bearing grease is brown which will camouflage any discolouration which is the first sign of ingress of salt water. The blue stuff means you can see any rust really easy by sticking your finger in the hub and checking the colour of the grease. Nonetheless if everyone did what you just did there'd be less boats on the side of the highway!

You wanna pack those backup bearings yo, also throw them in a ziplock baggy, then chuck'em in your trunk and forget they're there until you need em. If you forget to pack them and you need to replace them the grease in your wheel now which you might think "oh i'll use use the excess grease already in the wheel" might be full of dust/sand/grit and would chew them up in a matter of miles, absolutely repack them before you put them in your car brother.

@@FishingWithTimmyTurtle No prob, the reason I know this tooootally isn't because I did exactly what I described or anything >.< lol, let my learning experience save you the heartache brother. When I did it I had all 4 just sitting in my trunk and one of them had gotten wet or something, there was rust on it so it was useless, but I thought to myself "oh thank god I have both sets as backups" so I used the good set and used the grease from the wheel to repack it, I made it maaaybe 20 km before that sand or whatever in the grease burned the backup out, and I was in the same exact spot all over again. Ended up putting my fishing trip about 4-5 hours behind and I was piiiissed lol, figure I can help someone else out with my screwup.

Your bearings may just need to be adjusted, check them every year, it should have no play in the wheel and spin quietly. If you can hear your bearing, it is going bad and just greasing it wont fix it. If its quiet but has play, sometimes tightening the axel nut a BIT will fix it, you do not want to tighten it to where it causes resistance to spinning! If you do that the bearing can overheat and go bad quickly. Finger tight will usually do it, as long as there is no play in the wheel and little to no resistance to spinning freely, you are good. Check for the wheel for play after towing at least once. Trailers end up wrecked because people don't pay attention to their bearing and tires, do be that guy and don't forget your spare tire. I have made all these mistakes already

Had hard time getting right bearings too. Numbers are wore off. I wrecked the seals taking off. Didn’t think I’d have a hard time getting new ones. Can I get away with not putting outer seal on ?
