How To Replace Truck Topper Window Lift Gas Springs

Here is how to replace the window lifting gas springs for a truck topper. If you have a truck topper, and it won’t stay open because the Hydraulic spring struts have gone bad, this video will show you how to put new hydraulic lift springs on your camper shell rear window. Installation is very easy. You just use a screwdriver to pop the old hydraulic strut springs off, and then pressure fit the new ones on. The only tricky part in replacing the hydraulic window lifting springs on a truck topper rear window door is buying the right size. you need to measure the distance between The middle of the balls that the hydraulic spring strut connects to. You need to do this when the truck topper rear window is open and when it is closed, and buy the right hydraulic truck window lift spring with the correct open and closed dimensions. You also need to buy a spring with the correct tension, measured in pounds. On my truck it works very well with two 30 pound springs. If it all possible, you’ll want to look for a label on your old springs, which will tell you the open and close distance, and the pounds of pressure it’s supplies. I have the exact same truck topper as you and needed to learn how to remove the aluminum bottom piece of the Snugtop topper which I was able to do after watching your video - thanks; I have been looking for the rubber trim that surrounds the glass/plexi before it fits into the aluminum channel of the topper frame. Here are promising search terms you can use to find that stuff: rubber U channel for 6mm glass AND vinyl marine glazing spline.

The reason why the lift gas springs are upside down is due to the lubrication of the seals inside the gas cartridge (remember gravity??).

Unfortunately, I got mine without any struts OR brackets on the rear hatch. So I'm trying to figure out which brackets to use. It's a Gemtop Workmaster 6'x8' topper.

I like to cook under mine when camping but it sits a little low for my height. If I was to buy slightly longer lifts would it give me more height ?

I would if your hinge allows it to open any more and go higher. You could try disconnecting it and see how much higher your window will go before it reaches the end of the hinge travel.

I don’t know. They’re all a little bit different, so that would be tricky. I don’t know if you could find a thick enough piece of durable plexiglass to just build a whole window out of, and then bolt hinges onto.
