Even if you're a rookie and not technically adept, you can do this. I watched it once in 2014; forgot since then, then rewatched and installed my low beam for my wife's 2007 Outback in the middle of a Midwest snow storm--at night. Seriously. His real-time 5-minute explanation translated to my 10 minutes. I also installed the Sylvannia(?) bulb he installed. I used nitrile gloves to ensure I didn't transfer skin oils to the bulb glass.

Glad we could help you out again. Yes wearing gloves is a good way to ensure you don't end up touching the glass part of the bulb. Thanks for watching again and taking the time to leave us a comment.

Excellent instructive video - very professional. Allowed me to replace the headlight bulb on the drivers side in less than 10 minutes. The last time I replaced this bulb it took considerably longer, especially because I took out the battery. I also did not replace the cover correctly, so it let in water, which caused the light to blow. Highly recommended instructional video. Thank you.

The light just went out in my Legacy today, I bought the bulb, since I tend to like working on my own cars, but wasn't sure how to install the bulb, I don't like the idea of snapping or breaking anything. Thanks! One of my low-beam bulbs finally went out the other day on my 2007 (after 16 years first of the original bulbs to go!), so decide to replace both sets of high/low beams together. Everything went as shown. Watching this again my only mistake is that for some reason I connected the electrical line to each new bulb before popping it in the housing, which made it somewhat awkward ...d'oh 🤡. Also, thanks to previous commenters who sacrificed their spring clips, which led to me being extra careful not to break mine.

Great vid, but I would make one small suggestion. Don't disconnect the bulb until you've pulled it out of headlamp housing. Also, reconnect the new bulb first before you put it back into the headlamp housing. Why? Because you are less likely to drop it when wiggling it into place!!

Hello, yes the process is close.. You won't have to move the washer fill as the bottle is in a different location. You will have a the same covers over the bulbs. The bulbs will be different as there is only one because it has the high and low beam together to remove it turn it like the high beam in the video.
@squellacarolina10 жыл бұрын
Could this process go for a Impreza (2013), as well? Need to change mine out so I found and watched this video. Seems easy enough but wanted to know before I started. Thnx!

It will be very similar, it will be a tighter area to work in. Some find it easier to replace the bulb by turning the wheel all the way one direction and going up though the fender by popping the liner out and reaching up.

The Legacy shown in this video is a 2005 (as per the longer write-up on thediyguy site). I imagine the same procedure applies up to 2009 models. But sadly, 2010-2014 Legacy/Liberty/Outback models require you to access the low beam bulbs through the wheel wells, by folding back the inner fender splash shield. There are other videos on KZbin showing the procedure.

This is the exact car I have and we're having trouble actually removing the headlight assembly to be able to clean it (very cloudy, barely any light coming out). We seem not be able to get it out without taking off the bumper. Any tips?
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet9 жыл бұрын
You don't need to take it completely off. If you undo the clips by the finder and the ones under the grill with 2 people you can just wiggle the top of the bumper off so you can get to the 2 bolts under the headlight that hold it in. Just did a video on clearing the headlights on this car will try and edit and post it soon. As it will show you how to remove the headlights.

HI, i have a concern. I changed my low beam light bulbs with Sylvania ZXE but the light doesnt look right. i can see out of the sides the light bulbs are super bright, but some reason is not shining very well directly in front of me (both lights are working). is there a possibility to have install them in an angle such that they are not pointing directly forward? i checked the front of the light and they seem pretty clean.
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
Hello, I don't think you have the bulbs all the way in the bulbs should sit in a grove and tight up against the housing. Maybe there not all the way in. You could also park in front of a building or garage door about 8-10 away and see where the lights are pointing.. maybe there to high and need adjusting.

@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
Thanks, and thanks for taking the time to comment. I would make one for the fog lights but this legacy doesn't have the fog lights maybe in the next few weeks someone will bring one in. It should be as easy as pulling the inner fender well out of the side you need to replace the bulb on and twisting the back of the fog light housing and the remove the bulb.
@neverstopz904510 жыл бұрын
TheDIYGuyDOTnet Thanks for the response. As far as I can tell i have to take out the headlight casing all together to be able to reach the fog lights but I figured I would ask in case I was going about it the hard way.

Do you mean I can just go at it from underneath, ie. popping out the plastic tabs on the bumper? Sorry for my ignorance on this and thank you
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
Pa Du Yes. You can loosen and remove the center plastic part ( the one if you were to drain the oil) if your car still has it. Then pop the plastic fender liner out near the bumper and reach up and replace bulb. Another way is to turn the wheel all the way to the opposite side you want to replace the bulb on and then pop the fender liner out and reach in that way.

It is definitely harder with the 2010 Outback. Its like they put all kinds of stuff in the way just so you won't want to change out the headlight yourself. I finally ended up having to go up through the wheel well to replace the bulb. Once you get to to the headlight its a test of patience and manual dexterity. To make a long story short this job took me almost 4 hrs to complete. Damn, I really hate screwing in that cap for the headlights. The next time the headlights go out I might reconsider going to the dealer.

any advice on changing fog bulbs?
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
Your welcome. I would put the car up onto car ramps and use a wheel chock to ensure it can't roll. Then go under the front on the side you need to replace and then remove the couple of push pins and then pull down the black plastic shield / front of the inner fender away from the front bumper then reach up and remove cover and replace the bulb. I will have to do a video on this soon as there are a few people asking this question.

Will it be harder on a Subaru 2011 Legacy? I just saw another video with a guy crawling under the wheel well to replace the bulb! It's below zero here and my low beam drive side just went out last night. Also, those bulbs that you're putting in look like the blueish ones I see on some cars? Is that right? If they throw more light, I would like to upgrade to those. Thanks for the video. Thumbs way up!
@TheDIYGuyDOTnet10 жыл бұрын
Yes its a little bit hard as you are correct on a 2011 you will need to go in though the inner fender on the side you would like to replace the bulb. PITA without a garage. In the car they are a blue/white color the real blue colored ones are HID's. I think there noticeably brighter and I run them in all of my cars.

+Dennis Make sure you are using OEM or equivalent bulbs. Be sure not to touch the glass as the oil from your fingers will shorten the life oh the bulb. Also something to check is your electrical system if you test it at your battery with the car running it should be in the 13.5v- 14.5v range. If its higher you may want to have the alternator checked the higher voltage could be causing the bulb to blow. Also vibration can cause could the bulb to fail. Check and ensure the headlight bolts are tight to the car. Also I would check all connectors going to the headlight for corrosion.

I don't.. Next time one comes in I will be doing a video as a few people have asked. Those you need to go though the fender and do it by feel/ reach. Its a little bit harder.
