How to replace water pump impeller on a 1977 Evinrude Outboard Motor Part 2

I'm putting together a series on outboard motors on how to remove the lower unit, how to replace your impeller and also on how to replace the seals and oil in the lower unit. The Water Pump Repair Kit with Housing that I used for the impeller was by Sierra and was part # 18-3327
It replaces Johnson and Evinrude 394711 and fits
1974-UP 9.9/15 HP 2 Stroke and 1995-UP 9.9/15 HP (4 Stroke)

Can I just change out my fluid for winterization and change impeller out in the spring time??

I am going to pull the thermostat and try to wash out that channel with water. To see if that's blocked plus pull some oil to see if it needs changing. Maybe stick a stiff wire in the mid exhaust port or add water .

Tons of videos' showing how to strip one of these down......any monkey could do it, but the one thing in common is none of you guys show how to put it back together again. Especially reconnecting the gear shaft rod to the gear shaft coupler, which is by far much harder to do than simply stripping it down. I had exactly that problem and found no help on youtube whatsoever. In the end i found out you have to have the gear shift in forward and the lower leg gear in reverse. A simple detail that no one seems to want to show or talk about. You also have to jimmy and wobble it about plus use a screwdriver as a lever to stop the lower leg gearing dropping into neutral or forward when you push the gear shaft into the connecting coupler. You may also need to use pliers to hold the bottom of the gear shaft to stop it moving back up into the housing The top screw in the connecting coupler has to be removed before attempting the reinsert the gear shaft into the coupler....and you need to make sure that the gear shaft drops right to the bottom of the coupler when you insert it. If not you can't get the screw in...This is where the jimmying and wobbling comes in.

Ok cool..after watching about 10 video's on lower leg removal/impeller change for smaller Johnson outboards i got fed up. They all showed basically the same and none of them explained in any detail just how you're supposed to reconnect the gear rod into the coupler again. The fact that there has to be a mismatch in gears between the lower leg and the gear shift position just wasn't mentioned at all...and it's not as if it's the intuitive thing to do. Considering this piece of information is crucial to reassembly, it should have been mentioned. I'll bookmark your part 8 for the next time i have to remove the lower leg and i've forgotten how to reassemble..
