Water in lower unit oil ?? 1977 Evinrude Outboard Motor Part 4

Hi Guys,
I'm putting together a series on outboard motors on how to remove the lower unit, how to replace your impeller and also on how to replace the seals and oil in the lower unit. The Water Pump Repair Kit with Housing that I used for the impeller was by Sierra and was part # 18-3327
It replaces Johnson and Evinrude 394711 and fits
1974-UP 9.9/15 HP 2 Stroke and 1995-UP 9.9/15 HP (4 Stroke)

Merc Manual : "Note color of gear lubricant when draining. If the color is white or cream it MAY indicate the presence of water in lubricant. Gear lubricant which has been drained from a gear case recently in operation will have a yellowish color due to lubricant agitation/aeration. Gear lube which is mixed with assembly lubricant (Special Lube 101 or 2-4-C w/Teflon) will also be creamy white in color. This is normal and should not be confused with the presence of water. If water is suspected to be present in the gearcase, a pressure check of the gearcase should be completed by an authorized dealer. Pouring a portion of the gear lubricant into a glass jar and allowing the lubricant to settle will allow any water in the lube to separate and settle to the bottom of the jar."

The oil is black. Seems to me if water was getting in the oil would be cream colored. My bet is water got in there during the disassembly of the lower unit at some point.

Actually the reason that the lower unit had such clear water and black oil was that it had separated due to sitting for a long time. Oil and water mix during agitation but when sitting they don't mix very well because water molecules are more attracted to each other than to oil molecules. Detergent molecules are attracted to both water and oil. After sitting for a while the oil and water will separate. Hope that helps!

I have a leaking seal on my lower unit. I noticed my motor kind of jumping and not running smooth after I engaged the throttle to forward and not running with all its power. Is that a symptom of water in the lower unit or does that sound like a fuel issue?

I had all of the seals changed in my lower unit and when I drained it this fall there was a lot of water that came out. What should I do next
