Hey all you home menders! Rotted wood everywhere!. Dustin shows us how to replace a wood window sill. Remove the old sill and install new sill and sill nose. Available in vinyl too, never have to replace a window sill again. This old wood window just had some years added to its life. You can do it!

Thanks man. I've been scouring the internet trying to find an image of how the two pieces join together. I thought the slight drop was right, but the previous install had the two pieces flush with each other. It was done back in 2016 and the whole sill already rotted out again, so I think the way they nailed it together was catching water. We've had a lot of wet years in NC during that time so that must be why it got destroyed so quick. Anyway, I'm gonna go nail that nose piece on now and get to caulking and painting.

So I replaced the window I was kind of second on the job as there was a primary person hired to do the work. The instal went beautifully. He did one thing I don't think I would have done we needed more space in the existing still. He chiseled it by hand where I would have just taken a rotary tool and a straight edge and cut it out that way but I couldn't believe how beautiful his chiseling was. it's a shame to even cover it with the window when we were all done. And after caulk and paint, it looked beautiful.

@homemend

Hi John. This was probably the original window sill from the house… Possibly 75+ years old. The reason wood rots out is because it’s not protected. Homeowners with wood trim should have it painted and recaulked every few years. Maybe more in problem , prone to water areas. I hope this helps

Hey Michael here is the sill and no’s material. In PVC. They do sell it in wood cut to size and by the foot but can’t find a link online for that one, that one’s in store www.homedepot.com/p/Veranda-1-1-4-in-x-5-1-4-in-x-84-in-Vinyl-Sill-Moulding-RY327-ZM084CRY/207001400 www.homedepot.com/p/1-3-8-in-x-1-5-16-in-x-84-in-Vinyl-Composite-Sill-Molding-0711807003/100032809

Hey AC. They sell wood and PVC of this style in the baseboard aisle at Home Depot. The wood is cut by the foot and the PVC is sold by the piece. You got this

Hello, so I replaced an old bathroom window with a new vinyl window. The old window sill had to be replaced also, but the problem I have run into is the sill is slightly angled, or tilted out, as was the bottom of the ole window, but the new window has a flat bottom window frame. Any solutions for that?
@homemend
@homemend 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Raymond yes sir. You may try building the area up with wood to help secure the new window and definitely insulate it. Then you would need to modify the trim on the outside to trim it out as needed.. Does this make sense question ? Check out the mighty network you can upload photos if needed

Hey WW. Sometimes they do install vinyl windows over top of wood that later needs to be replaced. Ideally, you would want to remove the window, but if it’s all metal wrapped and pretty, I would try to rebuild it with the window in place think of it more as surgery… I hope this helps.

I wanted to see how you replaced the rot under it LOL. I might have same issue. I definitely have rot in the sill but haven't investigated any further. Only one thing I saw I would do differently. I would not caulk on top of dirty siding. I'm OCD about those kind of details that can make a difference later on. :-D

Hey Jim, the nose should be right next to the sill. I usually favor the depot and have no trouble finding it. It’s cut by the foot but they also sell 7 foot pieces of PVC as well check in that section if you can’t find it in the wood

Hey jas. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s should have them. They are sold by the foot at Home Depot so I would suggest there. The nose is sold separately. It’s pretty pricey so make sure you got your measurements close

Dustin, Curious WHERE you sourced your Sill and Sill Nose? Read all the other comments here asking the same thing "Where to Buy this Product". Think they all have the same issue as I did when trying to source it. Went to All Three of the Big Box hardware ( L, HD and Menards) and they've never seen what you used. Also went to Pacific Mutual Door & Window with same results, Nothing like what you show on video. So even went online and still nothing. Would really like to purchase your solution, but seems to be unavailable anywhere nowadays. Perhaps you could post the HD item numbers / product codes to help out your obviously frustrated viewers that are attempting to replicate your repair utilizing the same product you used.

Hey, on the water. That is a great question and I’ll answer it the same way I do for everyone and you may have read it in the comments but I just checked its availability and we are good to go Not sure if it’s just an East Coast thing? But check it out anytime I buy anything it’s from Home Depot unless I say otherwise but typically the depot wins. This is called sill and nose. The only thing available online is the full 7 foot vinyl sticks, but they also sell it by the foot in wood in the trim aisle. It’s been there as long as I have been a contractor. What part of the country are you in? Go to the Home Depot app ( they don’t offer a product number ) no and type in 1-3/8 in. x 1-5/16 in. x 84 in. Vinyl Composite Sill Molding You will be shown the sill, and the nose. You can toggle the switch “available in stores now“ but if yours does not have it available now you can also order it. I hope this helps. Keep me posted.
