How to Replace Your Car Key Battery | Subaru

Video on replacing car key battery for a Subaru Crosstrek / Impreza. The process is the same for most Japanese car brands. The difference is often a different battery, such as for keyless start.
I recommend you get a small screwdriver, but everyday household items may work. I used the screwdriver on my swiss army knife for example. Please don't use a knife or a sharp object.
Battery:
CR1620 for this remote.
If you have keyless entry, this is the most popular battery used. But you can google your car remote battery and find the right one:

Awesome!! Super clear video... I was wondering how it would work. My key fob stopped working this morning. TIP: when my key fob wouldn't work, I found out the key didn't work either in the door lock! ** It hadn't been used in so long the lock was jammed. Luckily I had some W D40 to spray into the door lock so I could get in the car. ** My tip is to occasionally use the key in the door lock so it doesn't jam up from lack of use.

@@JoeSki42 I'm so sorry to hear that! Give it a rest and the key fob may be able to open the door in a bit. That happened to me.... In the meantime, order an extra battery for the key fob. Subaru may have a way of opening your door, this can't be new to them! blessings and good luck

Great video. I have a non-digital multimeter, but not sure how to use it to test my key-fob battery. I set it to DCV 5, then tested. The needle goes to 2.9 on the 5 scale. I also tested my spare key-fob battery, unused for 4-years, and it registers 2.8 volts. Why would an unused battery show less volts than one used every day for 4-years? Should I replace these batteries? Thanks.

They are fine. They are 3V batteries so anywhere close to 3V is still good. Car remote batteries using coin cells typically last a really long time before replacing even with daily use.

My fob wasn't working after replacing the battery. 2012 Outback 3.6r. I pressed the panic button and car went off. Now the fob works

10 year shelf life? My Key fob struggles to lock/unlock my car after 3 years. I literally stood outside of my car last night pressing "unlock" for 5 minutes before it finally opened.

I think they mean in a lab. Careful about the cheap ones they sell online. I imagine they are the ones that are on the last few months of that 10 year shelf life.

I've used the corner of used credit cards, IDs, hotel keys to open it up. Stack 2-3 and use the corner. Otherwise, flathead screwdriver is the way to go. It won't take a lot of force most of the time.
