Bless you for posting this. We had to change a bulb in the pool light in 104F in the shade so 120F+ in full sun in Phoenix AZ in June. (House sale). We watched at least 3 videos this was the only one that was specific from start to finish. We had put the rubber gasket around the metal instead of the glass, probably heat stroke lol. Then your video showed up recommended and we got it done! You saved us. Thanks!

I added an led color changing light to my pool like yours. My main problem was , water kept leaking into housing. I was searching KZbin to find out solutions. I just happened to see your video again on the led you installed… to my surprise,and to my stupidity, lol, when I saw you take apart your housing , I realized that what I was doing , was fitting gasket around both glass and housing . Stupid me…..Dah !! You solved my problem buddy without even intending… Thanks so much for your video. Thank You!

Thanks Jake for this video - it inspired me to replace my pool light and I am super happy about it. I struggled in putting the light fixture back - I could not quite figure out how to clip it in place in the bottom (6:28 in your video). Can you please share some additional instructions on how to do that? I would like to replace one more bulb in the pool and I want to do it the right way. For the first one, I think I just screwed on the top and I am not sure if I did the bottom clip part quite right. I want to go back and fix that as well.
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake Жыл бұрын
Nice job! Yes, it takes some feeling around to get the clip on the bottom to fall into place. I had that issue too. So there’s a small clip at the bottom of the light that needs to be slid into place, then push the light in fully and use the screw to hold it in place at the 12 o clock position. Sometimes the builder installs the niche a little crooked and maybe the clip and screw are not exactly 12 o clock and level so that could be why….

Nice and thanks for sharing, One Question are these bulbs for a straight 120 volts connection or do they run via a transformer (12V) for safety? As both of my lights run thought transformers.
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 3 ай бұрын
The ones in the video are straight 120 V. Around 2018 I would say in onwards people started switching over to the transformer and lower voltage systems as they hit the market and because they are a little bit safer. If you have the transformer version, you’ll just need to look for 12v lightbulbs instead of 120v. Also check that your transformer is performing OK. Which I have another video on how to check that when I talk about replacing led light drivers.

@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 4 ай бұрын
Gosh, that’s a tough one. I can see why the manufacturers made them small and why the pool builders started to use them. But we have quickly learned that LED lights do not reach their lifespan as advertised. They need active cooling with an electric fan or something to make them stay cool to last long. So the small little niches in the pool Are full of heat and do not dissipate. Therefore, these led lights burn out so quickly. Unfortunately, there are no different style to replace these that make it better. I would try to find a “contractor pack” that includes manyincludes quantity to reduce the price. And then it would only run these as needed versus running them every night like I do. Not a lot of help but that’s just my brain 🧠 is thinking. By the way, the manufacturer says they have a 50,000 hour lifespan. That is 2,000 days straight or 5.7 years is non stop use.

Page 8 of this Jandy incandescent light shows it looks just like this video. Wouldn't be a huge deal to buy a bulb and seal and do the project and when you get the light out realize it either works or it doesn't and put it back in place. Replace the seal even if you dont replace the bulb. But, from the looks of it, Jandy lights are very similar to the pentair in the video if it is an old incandescent bulb like the video. www.jandy.com/-/media/zodiac/global/downloads/h/h0312300.pdf?force=1

I just ordered the Yu Meil "LED Pool Lights for In-ground Pool 120V 45W Blue Pool Light Bulb Replacement for Pentair Hayward Pool Light Fixture" since your review of Yu Meil was your preference. But my question has to do with the spa/jacuzzi light. The spa has a much smaller housing. So do you think the same bulb (Yu Miel) or multi-colored one you had for your spa, will fit in the much smaller housing? Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks again for the great video. Please keep them coming.

Hi Mike. Goad u found it helpful. My spa light is the same size as my pool. But I understand some builders use smaller ones. I’d start with the pool light first. Once u get that one done you’ll know more since You have done it. Then you can pull the housing on the spa, float it to the top and check the model and bulb number. It’s likely a smaller bulb then the ones recommended in my video. But I bet there if an LED version of it available. Let us know how it goes bc your project will likely help other people that also watch this video.

The rubber gasket seal probably just leaked overtime as it got old and brittle. Do you like the video and turn off the power and bring the house up to the top on a towel and open it up and assess what the rubber gasket looks like. You’ll also have to assess how bad the corrosion is on the housing. If it’s been sitting like that for a long time, it’s probably corroded inside and needs to be replaced. If you need to replace the pool light fixture itself, I have another video on that here or you can hire someone. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jaHMmnmAhbmoiJYsi=NjOTyiPdhtpXIPZq

I also have light for my spa. Will this light be to bright for it? If so, is there a matching bulb for the spa? Can they sync with bulb in pool?
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 3 жыл бұрын
I don’t think I’ll be too bright for it. I use the same one for my pool in my spot and it was fine. Usually the lights just came across and run into a step right away so there’s not as much space for the light to fan out. If you have both the pool and the spa on the same color or settings depending with Bobby choose they will turn back on and the exact same color in settings that you had last time. So just save them by setting them both up independently and then when you turn on both they will be together. With that said if you’re doing color fades then I don’t think you could get those two sink but if you want Beau to be blue or boat to be creating our boat to be white that’s no problem

Light cavity is designed to be part of the pool. Water sits in there at all times. The electrical conduit is mounted above water line so the pool water doesn't travel through it and out of the pool. The light is basically a big water proof capsule that sits in that water-filled cavity.

Hi Rick, that would depend on How long you’ve had water intrusion in your housing. If it’s been a really long time it may be rusted inside. But it’s definitely worth a shot because a new bulb is not that expensive and the gasket is cheap too. So I would start there and if it doesn’t work then you know step two is replacing the housing. But you’ll be a lot less invested at least attempting a bulb and gasket change first. When you open up the old housing make sure that you sit out in the sun for a day or two and get every last drop of water out of it before putting it back together.

No. In my case my bulb is 120 V and the outlet is 120 V. The other style that you may see in a pool is a 12 V system. @HeyStripes secure the power by turning off the breaker. Remove one of the housings and put it on the side of the pool. Figure out what model number you’re dealing with for the housing. Order a new gasket. Open it up and put in a two dollar lightbulb or just steal one from your house. If the basic 120 V lightbulb works and that’s the system that you have then there’s nothing wrong with your housing or your electrical supply. If the lightbulb doesn’t work double check that you have 120V system and not a 12V system. Use a $10 multimeter.

Can you revert back to this style of light from a Hayward Color Logic?
@fixitwithjake

I just looked it up. I think you would need to swap out the entire housing and pull a new electrical cord through the conduit. Not a big deal for a professional pool guy but not super simple for DIY. There are youtube videos on how to do it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqOzg4ynpJ6If5o

Like everybody else, once the pool light goes out we start googling. I initially checked out a few KZbin videos and all pretty much indicated your straightforward method. I decided to call the company that built our pool in 2018 and I asked the question "is it ok for me to replace the standard incandescent with an LED" but they indicated you can only replace it with the original incandescent. This sounds ludicrous to me but I guess I don't know exactly what fixture is in there as mine looks exactly like yours. I have no idea if it is a Pentair "fixture" in there or some other brand but most of the equipment on my pool is Hayward. How can you check the brand of lights you have? Does it say on the fixture itself before I remove it on the outside?
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Pete, no way to know the brand of your fixture without pulling it. I can assure you that pulling it out with one Phillips screw and floating it to the top on top of a towel is fairly straightforward. I would not hesitate to that task. Once pulled out they’ll be a sticker on your house in this tells you exactly what it is. I would anticipate 90% that you can replace this bulb yourself.

@@fixitwithjake Hey I searched for the model number but to no avail. On the housing it lists: Pentair series 7810XXXX, 100W, 120V, R-20 bulb, use with model 7824xxxx, 792066xx. On amazon I found "Pentair 79108500" which is 4.5 " but this spa light measures 5.75". Have a question for you. Using your awesome video I was able to replace the led bulb in the main pool (8 inch gasket, 40W led as per your link). It worked when I turned it on when connected but sitting on top of the pool tiles. I installed it in the pool (but did not test it again). Then I took out the separate spa bulb (which worked fine) , brought it up and realized that it was a totally different size. I then put the spa bulb back in. I turned the breaker back on and now, absolutely nothing. Neither bulb works. But, the breaker did not pop. Checked the GFCI sockets in the house but no issue there. I would think if water got in or I installed it wrong the breaker would go - any idea what to check next? The switch to turn on the pool light is a Lutron timer/schedule light, but the LCD screen on it does not even come on at all. So bummed...

No need to empty the pool to change the bulbs. At least on the can that I have. Did you drain it for a different reason. Yes, I would say that the niche in the wall needs to be full of water to act as a good heat sink and keep the housing cool on a hot 500-watt bulb. But since you went to LED they are much cooler and it can prob dissipate a lot of heat through the front glass.

@fixitwithjake

I would rate this one on a 3 out of 10. You def need to shut off the breaker. First turn on the pool light where you know that it is working and then go flip the circuit breaker until you see the lights went off. Then go back and turn off the wall switch or however you turn your pool lights off. You have now taken 2 steps to prevent an issue. 3rd step, unscrew the pool light and bring it to the surface. Open the housing and the glass and then use this pen to confirm that the power is in the off position. If you do all this you will be safe and secure. amzn.to/3BwNA9H this is your life and health so don’t do this when rushed and do not cut any corners.

Do you have to replace the original Aqualink circuit board to do this conversion to LED?
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 4 жыл бұрын
I did not. I have a pentair system. The circuit boards just turn a relay on or off. Either 12v or 120V. Depending on the time you set inside of them. You can't go from 120v system to 12v system or vice versa. SO pick the LED bub that works with your voltage. The old bulb tells you the voltage on the side.

How to replace complete light hosing of inground pool
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 3 жыл бұрын
Basically what you do is you turn off your power supply and confirm that the power is off. And then you would go to the junction box where it is connected to your electrical system. He would remove the wires there. Your goal will be to use the old cable to pull in the new cable. So what you do is you remove your old light at the pool cut off the cable from the housing securely attached to the new cable. Be really careful about how you do this and I would watch videos on it. And then you want to loop up the conduit with soap and water and pour the new cable through from the poolside back to the junction box using the old cable. And you simply attach the new cable to your junction box there. Then you may want to swim underwater and add a waterproof caulking where the cable meets the pool to prevent water from leaving the pool. Even though it shouldn’t leak out but if there was a small leak in your pool light conduit you could leak water into the soil. So I think it’s advised to caulk this location.

@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 7 ай бұрын
Three things come to mind. Maybe the light housing has a little bit of dirt or imperfection on the metal and the waters seeping around the gasket. So double check that it’s extra clean. Maybe you got a bad gasket? Maybe the fixture is leaking out of the back where the cable goes. You can get some waterproof putty and try sealing that area if that’s the case. you’ll know it’s leaking out of there. If you put the lightbulb into the pool with the cable facing up and air bubbles come out of the cable area. Also, there’s no crack in the glass even fine cracks. Also, tighten down the outside of the light fixture a bit more.

Thanks. Ya, power is 3x the national average here. I like to run the pool light every night 365 days a year. Most people won't do that bc they are afraid of how much power it will use. But if you do, it's worth checking how much that would cost. Which in the end is not nearly as much as I had imagined. Even cheaper if power prices are better where you live. Like you said, pools are expensive so my theory is to use them a lot! That way the price per use falls vs someone that doesn't make good use of it.

@@fixitwithjake Lol, all good, is the replacement of the electrical cord necessary? My plans say I have a 12v 100w housing, I can just purchase one of those $80 12v LED color lights and change the bulb, right?
@fixitwithjake
@fixitwithjake 3 жыл бұрын
Correct. Your goal should be to simply replace the bulb that is currently in place with the new one of your choice. If you have a 12v system then be sure to buy a 12v color bulb. There’s both 120v and 12v versions. Hopefully you don’t need a mess around with replacing the cable. The cable is attached to the light fixture and then it is state through a PVC pipe back to the power source. You would need to replace the light fixture if it’s not like mine and it’s sealed shut it does not have a replaceable pole inside or if it’s damaged, or if it leaked or if it just simply doesn’t work. In that case you would unhook it from the power source and yank out the entire cable towards the pool. Then he would buy a whole new fixture and sneak wire back through the PVC pipe to the power source. That repair is much more involved but totally doable. It’s light fixtures are expensive like $400 plus so don’t replace the fixture if it’s still working and in good condition. Simply replace the bulb and gasket if you can.

After we purchased our home with pool 6 years ago, our light “went out” the first summer. We had a pool company come out then and they quoted us $1000 estimate to change it out to LED. We were shocked. The said it wasn’t just a simple bulb switch. Were they less than honest about this ? I did just do a random google search and saw something that indicated it may “require a small power transformer to convert 240-volt electricity into 12-volt electricity. What does this mean? The transformer plugs straight into a standard power point. The LED pool light plugs into the transformer, reducing the voltage from 240 to 12, which is all a LED light needs. If you think of a 12-volt battery that powers a personal torch, there isn't any risk of electrocution-fitting an LED light to your DIY pool.” Your video seems so simple, but I wonder why i would’ve been quoted estimate $1000 six years ago. Due to some of the small upgrades and taking proper care, our pool really does not cost us very much money. Maybe $2,000 a year for chemicals, gas heat a few times, electricity and repairs.
