I have found over many years of repotting/planting that a hose using a medium jet of water removes the soil from the roots quite nicely. Yup, you do get wet.

I have about 25 trees. Still a novice but not a complete noob. I have tried 3 cotoneasters from nursery stock and ALL have died. I can’t figure out why, unless they are super sensitive to root pruning. Any advice is welcome. 🙏

All my Cotoneasters have been collected from unwanted garden shrubs, which I have asked the owners permission to dig up. I show them zero love when. Digging up, then pot them up deeply in compost perlite, vermiculite and sphagnum. After a year they come out, radical root work is done to fit in a bonsai pot and pot in a mix of kanuma, sakadama, a bit of compost and cover the roots in sphagnum. No wind, direct sun, or fertilizer, or rough movement from watering with the hose. Always fix them hard to the pot with wire. Works with every time

What time of the year to do a trunk chop? Like chopping off everything and just being left with a little stump

Spring when the buds start swelling is good for many species. Someone asked the same question on the Feb Q&A so I’ll answer in more detail when that vid comes out 🙂

Not as much as I used to as they cost more and need watering more often. But they certainly do a good job of encouraging lots of fine roots
