How to repot almost rootless Golden Barrel Cactus 🌵💛

Golden Barrel Cactus is very common and hardy here in Las Vegas and the desert Southwest. It is unique and very distinct that you can easily recognize this cactus among the rest.
I really hope that I'm not too late that their roots will grow more abundantly and healthy. 😊

You used straight MG cactus mix? No added perlite/pumice for drainage?

At first, yes. I used Miracle Gro cactus mix alone. Because I thought without perlite and the fact that I'm living here in the desert doesn't require me to water them too often especially every summer were temps are above 110 degrees for weeks. But, that wasn't effective. I'm still watering these two every week when it is scorching hot here! So this spring, I changed the soil for these 2 Golden Barrels, still MG cactus mix and I added a little perlite. 1 scoop of Perlite per 4 scoops of Cactus mix. 💛

I have golden barrel too but it has smaller roots almost to none. I have repotted it by changing the soil. At the same time. Didn't let it dry for a week outside. But I haven't watered the pot yet. Is it ohk. Or is it a compulsion to let it dry only outside, not inside the pot with pure dry soil.

Hi there! That's good that you checked and rescued your Golden Barrel Cactus. Once the cactus was transferred to a new dry soil, you can water it after 1 week. And then, water your cactus according to the location, climate and/or season you have. For me, here in Southwest US which is a desert region, I water these Golden Barrels weekly on summer season, then every 2 weeks for the rest of the seasons. They stayed outdoors all the time on bright indirect sun. Just make sure your new potting soil drains water quickly, to avoid root rot. 👍🏻

Hi there! What is the description of your ball cactus? There are several plant identifying apps that you can download were you can take a picture of you cactus and it will show up what plant do you really have. But sometimes they're not reliable and suggests different plant names which are clearly incorrect. If ever, try to search for Barrel Cactus online and select Ferocactus Plant Info from gardeningknowhow. Also, search for 14 Barrel Cacti Types from growing vale website, they have descriptions for different types of ball-type cactuses that can really help you identify what you have. 😊

Okay I have a barrel cactus for about 3 years now grown quite a lot but hasn't produce roots

Wow! There could be a lot of factors though, maybe it's time to change the soil and do water it only when the soil is dry but not bone dry, so the roots can get established.

@@pacificgardener I'm going to do a soil change it's only thing I could think of cuz I try not to overwater it it has doubled in size in the last 3 years but still no roots what blows me it fell over so I put it back in the soil added a little water to the dry dry dirt

​@@kingwoods4906 Hello....this is the first time seeing any of your videos!... But your response puzzles me....water when it's dry but not bone dry??... I thought that was the idea...let it dry out completely between waterings ! I've taken a special liking towards golden barrel cacti recently....so far I have 2 of them that I purchased from home Depot...their juvenile... probably 5" diameter... about 3,4" high. I've started taking up interest in them because I hear their having some problems in the wild, people are actually digging them up out in the deserts and selling them in like a black market? ...crazy huh??.... At any rate yeah any tips or tricks you could share about how to take care of these guy's would be appreciated 👍...I live in Phoenix AZ so yeah I'm just trying to do my part, however small that might be!

The towel trick is a nice touch! I've seen people use Styrofoam before!!..... I never knew that that is why you didn't water cactus after transplanting....thank you! 🌵🌵🌵
