The long dark spines makes this look like an Echinopsis leucantha. They have very tall, white flowers that smell like beer. I put a close-up of one of them in the second "Bee Action" video, FYI. It looked like there was still a small black spot, near the middle of the stem. I would have told him to cut a little more off. Good Luck! OK, I just went out and checked our plants. This species has curved spines, unlike most of the others. BTW, one of ours is crested, haha!

I did this to my cactus. It was yellowing at the bottom and squishy but still had roots intact. When I sliced off the yellowish part, there were no black spots in the middle. Do you think I could've gotten away with just air drying it without cutting?
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Ana :-D You definitely did the best thing by cutting it to be on the safe side, if it was squishy it may have been rotting and sometimes this can happen inside of the bottom of the cactus even when the roots still look ok, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful weekend XXXXX

I agree with DEA-Exotics that it looks like a Saguaro; however, it is quite unusual to have one in Ireland since it is native to the Arizona Sonoran Desert. Many folks have tried to keep them in other parts of America, and other countries with poor results. You mentioned that it was 43 years old...most Saguaros would be larger at that age. I can't tell from the video, but a Saguaro's spines would be about 2 inches long. I have a baby that is similar in diameter and is 6 inches high; its age is estimated to be about 20 years.

I love all the different things I've seen done with them, wall plantings, etc, and thought I'd like some of my own. Funny thing is, my larger cactus (3" tall) does look like it might be starting to rot at the base, and along comes your vid teaching me how to save it! Great timing! @raidenuchiha6127
@raidenuchiha6127 5 жыл бұрын
If its colour has changed yellowish then this is a good indication. Also, try poking a finger into the soil, if it returns with wet soil then you know. Try noting down when you watered it last and give it 2 weeks then check to see if it is still moist. This channel and many other channels have great advice on watering cacti.

My cactus is really tilted can you give me some advise
@cactusmann5542
@cactusmann5542 7 жыл бұрын
Squirtle Squad I think i may be able to help you with that. Therese actually multiple reasons a cactus can tilt; so im gonna line them up and you judge which situation youre in: Type a-bad tilting - these one can result from diseases and inadquate growing conditions, and result from: 1-rot- such as the video- can result from fungal/bacterial infections on the plant stem or root-recomend following the video- cactus stem is yellow and soft, root rot means plant is unstable; 2-etiolation - cactus is in a dark area and is looking for light - stems are thin and weird looking- look up what kind of cactus do you have and see how to deal with it. 3-mechanical damage- disinfect the wound/ and or try to propagate like in the video if the center has been cut; type b- normal 1- sun following- this works on the same prinicple as etiolation, but the stems look normal- this is because some cacti have sunflower like growing traits-the apex tends to turn toward the sun 2-over or under watering- changes in cactus tissue turgor may cause deflation and the cactus be flaccid,-in this case increase watering- or buckling under weight because of tissue filled water- decrease watering or may lead to damage in the form of scars. 3- age-some cacti naturally crawl on the ground

Hi it could be because it needs a change of soil as the nutrients in the soil may have become exhausted and its good to check the root system out and freshen up the soil, also check for any signs of hidden bugs as they can suck the colour from your cacti but can be well hidden, XXXXX
