How To Repot an Avocado Tree | Putting an Avocado Tree into a Bigger Container

Today I will be showing you how to repot an avocado tree - that is; taking an avocado tree from one pot into a larger pot.
The avocado I'm using today is pretty root bound, so it's time for a new pot. I will be showing you the soil mix I use to enable my avocado trees to be as healthy as possible. Following these instructions will give your avocado trees the best chance of growing to be big, strong, healthy plants. Good luck out there!

Thank you. Great information. Ive been given a tree or maybe 3 as it has 3 stems? Planted in garden soil though in a big pot. Think I need to separate them and repot in your compost mix. Just hope they survive afterward!

This is so helpful! I've been wondering why my avocado trees have been drooping lately. I picked them up and noticed both have roots coming out of the drainage holes. I definitely will be repotting them a week or so once the soil dries out.

Weird sequence of events that has resulted in my avocado plant going into transplant shock, if anyone could offer insights it would be greatly appreciated! I have a ~1.5 year old avocado plant that has been in the same, relatively large pot its entire life. My boyfriend's father overwatered the plant about 2 months ago, leading it to drop a bunch of brown leaves. New growth started swelling from a node about halfway up the stem, and I'd been meaning to prune it anyways, so I decided to do the snip. It seemed happy about that, the new growth kept developing and leaves were about to unfurl. BUT I'd also been meaning to repot it, and I read somewhere that repotting after pruning was good (??) So I did that about 1 week after pruning. I was very gentle with the roots and felt like I'd done a good job. But now, the new growth is dying, leaves are drooping, and it looks absolutely miserable! Is this just transplant shock or have I possibly killed it? Also, it's fall here in Canada, which I realize now is a bad time to be doing any of these things. SAD!

Oh yes she definitely needs a new home to stretch her legs! And the good thing about us green thumbers is, how we can almost ALWAYS find a way to help most plants back to life from a sad state. Also, if I may, wanted to share a little knowledge for thought when repotting/transferring a plant from one pot to another (or pot to ground visa versa). Other than generously watering, It's really better to wait to do much anything more drastic to the plant after transference, like fertilization and pruning et al until sometime after. Waiting until about a couple days after the plant adapts to its new pot and fully bouncing back is then the best time to go the next step in fertilization and pruning. This way the stress isn't too great on a plant of any type. Fertilizer is already strong, depending on the type and kind of food you're using. But like grandma and mom always said, it's always better to be safe than sorry. So never throw caution to the wind. Especially with your plants and gardens. Love your videos! Would you recommend mulching avocado trees in pots? I have mulched mine and used the same soil mixture as yourself, and find that the moisture meter stays within the "wet" reading.

jesscate28 that’s way over kill, if planted in ground early on from seed you can start getting flowers/fruits from years 4-6, if left to nature and not hand fed etc it could be double or more if ever.

If the pit broke off on both sides, is the plant done? It has tiny bugs on the soil, however the plants leaves are full and healthy, just a bit saggy. Also will leaves uncurl?

Is it okay to plant the pit in underneath the soil? That is how I replanted mine because the trunk is very long.

Hi Scott! Please help!!! I had a pretty healthy happy avocado plant. I noticed the top leaves looking really sad all of the sudden and figured it needs to be repotted since the pot was a bit small for how large the plant had grown. Day later all my leaves are looking sad. Should I just let it be? Will it make it?

Hi Scott! Would the Peroxide treatment you use for the roots also be helpful in eliminating possible gnat larvae In the soil of my Avocado Tree??? They're Driving Me Insane!! 😭😂🌿🥑🌳💚 ( My Tree is doing Great so far! Going on 2 yrs old and still in the same pot. 😁 My Very 1st Tree, now starting it's 9th set of leaves. I need to prune it... trim roots if rootbound and trim sme leaves..then after repotting add vitamin c to the water..it will heal the plant from shock or stress..you can also add hydrogen peroxide ..it would prevent root root and gives oxygen to roots for better absorption of nutrients

how you did it that its so short? I have over a 3f long trunk and 4 leaves at the top now he is still in the bottle with water can I cut this trunk and leave only about 5inch f it at the top and put it in the pot planter? I don't know what to do with that its way too long.

Hey there! Pruning is how I kept it short with lots of growth - if you just google 'pruning avocado trees' you'll find a number of my videos where I explain how to do it and where to do it. Avocado trees tend to grow tall and slenderly if not pruned.

Scott! I need some wisdom! I started planting my seed about two weeks ago and didn't let the water get too cold, but because I am growing my first one ever I didn't know you had to change the water. Good news is that I did indeed change the water but the seed is slowly starting to turn black/brown at the top but also curiously starting to crack as well. Is that black stuff going to kill the plant or is it just part of the process??

I have two in one pot that are about 6 years old, they are in a huge pot, but they are definitely starting to fight for space. I'd recommend keeping them separate so that you don't have to worry about it in the future.
