I'm not a quilt pattern expert but I "think," the first quilt is a version of grandmother's flower garden. It is definitely not a double wedding ring. I love your concept of repurposing damaged quilts. Very one of a kind!

How would it go if you made two hats, of inner lining and outer shell and sewed them together at the brim, turning through a gap in one of the seams of the lining hat’s band. And stitch through the layers of the brim to hold it together. Thanks for these great ideas!

hmmm, that might work. Having made a few of these, I feel like the important part is sewing the concentric circles on the brim to give it structure. That also makes the rest of the hat go together easily.

What fabric do you use for your lining. It sounds quite stiff and weighty. Is it a canvass of some sort?

It’s a muslin fabric. Medium weight

Thinking, with that preshrunk outer shell, you might prewash the lining?

the muslin came pre-shrunk. If it hadn't, yes, I would have washed and pressed it prior to using.

Just a regular muslin fabric. If you have quilting cotton, that would work too

How many sewing machines do you have? Would love to get a juki. I learned to sew on fur and leather designer repair. So fun. That was a long time ago!😊

When I work at my maker space (NextFab in Philadelphia) I use their Juki straight stitch machines. At home I have a Janome HD9 which is considered home-use semi professional. I LOVE the industrial machines!

I would not cut those up! If some patches are in bad shape you can just make the shape out of vintage material and place on top of the damaged piece and applique it in!

I have repaired quilts before. Some I choose not to.

Those quilts look too nice to cut up. I would have been hard presses to make that pattern, without deconstruting a hat.

I had a vintage pattern that I used. And there are plenty on Etsy as well. The quilts had plenty of damage and staining, and were sold to me as "cutters."
