Not sure if anyone will read this but thank you Mark for this video. Seiko couldn’t help and no repairers would touch it. This is my favourite watch given to my on my 30th by my wife 21 years ago and now it’s working again!! Thanks again Mark. 👍🏻👍🏻

Comment: Before you begin shorting the contacts to set zero the date indicator, you need to pull the crown out. It wasn’t said in the video and this little step cost me 45 minutes of my life. That being said, this is the only video I could find and I appreciate the effort!

What a great instructional video this is. The original quote to replace the battery was £100 from the jeweller to send it to Seiko. I did get a local jeweller to refit a battery but the date was never reset and the second hand run on the 4 second sweep so it didn't get used that much. I recently dug the watch out from the back of a drawer and the battery had long since died a few years ago. A visit to the local repairers was unsuccessful and I was advised to get a new watch as they were sure it was too far gone to save. For the cost of a £5 lithium battery and following this excellent video I now have the watch running like new. May thanks Mark!

I've come back to this video 5 years later as had one that just didn't seem to want to setup. Followed step by step and all good. ****TOP TIP**** I put my watch over a mirror so I could see the date without flipping the watch and saved me a bit of trouble with setup.

Been a watchmaker for over 45 years and studied in Switzerland, this is a very well done video. Have done this in the past many years ago but with age, have forgot many of the steps. I have a paper copy of the steps from Seiko but have renovated my shop this year and have not got all of it organized. Took a chance to see if anyone would have it on You Tube. Thank goodness Mark was right on with his excellent video. It is great to know that there are watchmakers who are willing to take the time from there busy day repairing to make excellent video’s like this. My customer took his watch to many places to have the battery replaced but no one would look at it. He came to our store, when other stores told him to bring to us for the job. With Mark’s help we have a happy customer. And that is what it is all about. Thanks again Mark and keep up the excellent work you give to us on You Tube. Cheers Canada Dan.

Thank you so much for this video. I purchased this watch for my dad as a Christmas Present years ago and he really likes it. When the battery died, my Mom was told that she would have to send the watch to Seiko to replace the battery ...$150 or about what the watch is worth. I took it to a watch specialist in Austin TX that would not do it citing "it is too complicated and easy to break". Using this video, my son and I were able to successfully replace the battery. I am so glad we were able to do this for my dad. Thank you again.

Thank you for the video! Around 2002, I took mine in for a battery replacement and was told that the motion had broken. I didn’t have the money to replace it, but I kept it thinking that I’d replace it one day. I saw this video and wondered if the folks who said the motion was broken, didn’t know how to reset the calendar? Sure enough, I replaced the battery, and followed the video and it worked perfectly. I’ll be giving it to my 24 y/o son shortly. Hope he’ll enjoy it as much as I did. Mahalo!

Thank you so much!!! I’ve had this watch for over 20 years and love it so much. Fred Meyer Jewelers couldn’t fix it so they sent it to SEIKO and they wanted to charge me $300 to fix it so I just gave up and let it sit for years. Now thanks to you I have it back for free! You are the best❤

Thank you so much for this. I had brought my 15 year old Seiko Perpetual into 2 different watch repair shops in the US and both turned me away stating that the risk to breakage and hassle of reprogramming was not something they wanted the liability for. Stuck with a broken Titanium Perpetual for ever or just trying to do it myself I found this video. Absolutely fantastic step by step instructions and I removed and replaced the battery easily and reset the calendar the very first time. You just made my weekend even better, I am just sorry it only took 4 years after you originally posted this tutorial! If I can offer one bit of advice as your watch band and case were pretty beaten up, I use MAAS polishing cream, a cotton swab and a soft cloth and can polish out most surface scratches from watches and bands without too much elbow grease. My Perpetual looks almost like new and thanks to you works perfectly again! Thank you.

Excellent tutorial, thank you so much! I have a titanium 8F32 gifted to me by my father 30 years ago when I went to another country to study, and after the battery died, I had a hard time finding a shop that knows how to deal with the resetting of the calendar. After 20 some years, I finally changed the battery and reset the calendar all by myself following your video! I'm wearing it as I'm typing this and I'm really liking this watch all over again.

I realise that its a long time since you posted this Mark but this week I picked up a nice condition one of these Seikos on Ebay for not much money as it was described as none functional. I opened it expected to find a mashed up PCB but it was OK and the battery was clearly dead, replaced it and followed your instructions and now have a fully functional perpetual calendar - thanks!

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us! Just a quick tip for other who follow, the crown needs to be pulled all the way out when resetting and setting the calendar Also, the "AC", "0", "Y", "M", "D" markings are actually stamped into the silver tabs near the copper colored contacts, Mine were in exactly the same positions as shown in this video. I also carefully peeled the plastic wrapping off the existing battery and put it on the new battery. My watch which I purchased new maybe 15 years ago, had only 1 previous battery change. It had a nonconducting brownish covering over the movement with an opening that corresponded with the opening in the battery wrapper. My Elec Eng gut tells me is if your watch has lost that layer or its an early version that didn't have one from the factory, and you don't re-use the battery wrapper, you're going to probably cause a short circuit and damage the watch. So, re-uses the battery wrapper just to be safe.

Fantastic tutorial video - it is vital that you follow the instructions to the letter - literally !! As with other comments here, the key things to note are .... the crown needs to be pulled all the way out when resetting and setting the calendar. Also, the tiny "AC", "0", "Y", "M", "D" markings should be visibly stamped on the silver tabs near the yellow coloured contacts. My Seiko PC watch is the rarer white dial 8F32-0160 purchased in 2002 and all the markings are in exactly the same positions as shown in this video. Again as with other commentators on here, I too carefully peeled the plastic wrapping off the existing battery (Seiko) and put it on the new battery (Panasonic) and aligning arrows with winder. It has only ever had only 1 previous battery change and local watch repairer charged approx £35 GBP to do it - very happy DIY amateur watch enthusiast !

Very much appreciated! I have an 8F56 that I tried to change the battery on fifteen years ago (before KZbin!). I failed at the first hurdle by not knowing the reset procedure, assumed I'd broken the watch and put it in a cupboard. Pulled it out a few days ago, discovered that the "new" battery I put in 15 years ago was now flat, bought another, followed these instructions and I have a lovely working watch! Because I hadn't used the watch in over a decade I completely failed to realise the three positions of the crown - folks, if the second hand is still moving when you pull the crown out then it's not out far enough. :)

Great stuff!! I sent mine off to a highly regarded watch repairer in Texas, and he did the servicde the first time. The next time I sent them (mine and my wife's) off for a battery replacement, he claimed that he couldn't do it due to the lack of parts and returned them. I seriously hope he didn't damage them. I'm going to order some batteries, and try this out for myself. I really don't have anything to lose at this point, as they have been sitting for 10 years with nothing done. The adventure begins!!

One note for people attempting.... After resetting the watch (pull out winder and push back in), there is a step to pull the winder back out prior to beginning setting the calendar day. This is not specifically mentioned but you can see that he does this. We skipped this and it took a few rewinds to figure out why it was not moving.

Mark Thank you very much for this video and I have now solved it - the 8F32 watch which a registered watch repairers in Tring, England told me needed a complete overhaul at the cost of over £100 is now fully functional with a £5.50 Panasonic battery powering it, with the date correctly set! Your instructions worked fine once I followed them to the letter. I can now answer my own earlier question and that of others below reference the label. Only Seiko sell the 2412 with a label attached, and I was confronted with a watch returned with no battery, hence no label. I used an image of the battery with the label on, downloaded via Google images, which I scaled to the exact dimensions of the battery, and then printed a copy onto sticker paper, which I covered with plastic film, ensuring to place a hole in the correct place for the negative terminal to still make contact with the battery. I am so glad I persisted because I cannot afford to buy another perpetual calendar watch with an accuracy of ±20s pa - the original was a significant birthday present and is now nearly 14 years old. Please keep your channel going Mark, it is really helpful; and to all those out there in similar situations persist and do not throw good watches away without giving it a go. Amazingly with the right instructor even a ham-fisted amateur as myself can do a sight better than some so-called professionals who appear to give up unless their pockets are filled with copious amounts of sterling! Thanks for making this video! I reused the sticker on the Seiko battery by peeling it off very carefully and put it onto the new one (a Panasonic). Had to tape its tabs down over the top with two very tiny pieces of tape. Insulates the battery from the movement with tiny opening for the (-) contact. Your video was an immense help to Seiko's written service instructions. You might mention that the same exact procedure is used with an 8F56 Perpetual GMT.

My 8F56 Perpetual Calendar is now up and running thanks to you. At first could not get the calendar ring to zero out/to one because the winder ring was pushed back in accordance with your instructions for shorting out the a/c contact (approx. 4:15 in video; "...pull the winder fully out and push it back in"), and I did not notice you had pulled the winder fully out, approx. 4:35 in the video. Once I pulled the winder all the way out, was able to reset all settings, calendar, month, year and day. Thank you very much.

Another one fixed, thank you Mark! I changed out the battery on one I bought from Ebay and it still didn't work. I got frustrated after about 20 min of rechecking and trying everything again. I almost felt like throwing it it out since it's been a looong time since something similar has happened. I have a red transparent film covering the underside of the negative battery side and I decided to double check it. Of course it was misaligned and one of the metal prongs was being covered and not making a connection. Just realigned it, tried again and now I'm happy again! Thank you so much Mark, I've been a big fan for a long time!

Excellent Tutorial! Very helpful. I couldn't find a local jeweler who knew how to replace my battery and reset the perpetual calendar! The only thing this instructional is missing is how to check that the settings are correct. To do this, pull crown out one position and push back in within one second. The second hand will move at 5-second intervals and stop the number of years since last leap year, then the calendar number will move to current month, and finally the calendar will move to current day.All set! Thank you!

Sweet! Got a titanium perpetual Seiko in a bin, gave up hope ever getting it to tun again, I hope I havn't damaged the circuit-board, have faint memory that I found instructions how to reset the calendar since the watch worked a short while after I replaced the battery. But now I'm keen to make a final try before giving up hope forever... Loved the watch, thought I'd have it for many years but it became a truly sad story after I broke the glass and sent in in for repair, major kudos to Seiko though as I recived a brand new watch after contacting them and told them the whole story with the incompetent watch store and thier repair center, never bought a watch again from that chain and tell all my friends to stay away from them!

Thanks for the detailed video, it was a great help in resetting the perpetual calendar on a 8f32-00a0! But now I've got an 8f23-0400 that has a screw-down crown. I think there's an issue with the stem insertion. It only runs one second at a time when it's at the second position. It stops running when it's pushed in all the way in to the first position. Is there a case where the crown can be inserted incorrectly so it acts like it's in the first position when it's actually in the second position and stops running in the first position (maybe because of pressure on the movement)? It feels and acts normal when I release and reinstall the stem but acts the same.

Great video Mark. Everything worked as described, however when I tried to set the calendar date at the end, the numbers would not advance or change to todays date. Is it something that I have or have not done? Thank you.

What an amazing video. I dug out my old watch from the back of a draw. I remembered leaving it there after the battery ran out. At the time the official Seiko repair was £100+. Now with a £5.50 battery and watching a video its fixed and the calendar is working. At first I couldn't get the watch to reactivate. The replacement battery didn't have the protective sticker/cover so I tried positioning the sticker off the old battery on the new one. I was then able to reactivate the watch. Just a coincidence or does the battery need the sticker? I don't know.

The video doesn't mention it but if your replacement battery didn't come with a sticker then make sure you put the sticker from the old battery on the new one. Your watch will not work if you do not do this. The sticker has an opening that lines up with the watches battery contact. The battery has to be aligned by placing the battery so the arrow from the sticker on the back aligns with the crown. This is shown in the video.

Thank you so much, I did not expect that it would be necessary to reset the perpetual calendar. Thought just will need to replace the battery. Very helpful information. Good luck to you.

Brilliant video. Glad I've seen it, just in case I ever stumble upon one of these. At this point I'm just a hobbyist looking to learn, but I'm quite serious about learning all that I can. On that note, I really appreciate what you're doing with this channel, and look forward to seeing it grow. Thank you for taking the time to share your work with us.

Mark - the video is really clear and appears helpful - I am awaiting a new battery from Panasonic. I have seen other videos that suggest there is a layer of red insulating film between the battery and the mechanism which does not appear in your video. Do we need this as my watch does not seem to have it? Many thanks

Hi Mark, thanks so much for your videos. They are so clear, your voice's so pleasant to listen to. I just have a Seiko perpetual with movement 6A32. It's different from what in your video! It has a push button above the crown. Can you show me how to reset it ? Thanks so much. I'll watch all of your videos for sure.
