Nice trick to find the * using fax. BTW, "STD" is standard, "STR" is starter (= ~40% of a standard).

Amazing ! Actually a video with helpful information that works !! I've had this printer for years and would never had come across this video if it was for the printer not working with three new cartridges I had. I thought at first, what.. did I get sold empty cartridges since they weighed closed the the "empty" cartridge. So I thought there was something else wrong. So coming across this video was a $$$$ saver. I wish I found this video 5 years ago... no telling how much $$$ a wasted on cartridges that weren't really empty. I like Brother printers, this printer has been great for the most part. Better than Cannon, Epsons, and Samsungs that I had in the past... but Brother needs to fix this. Either have accurate toner readings OR don't hide the reset ability. Thanks again Charles !!!! Have to make sure I saved this video so I don't forget who to reset when this happens again.

Thank you so much! I thought that the cartridges that I was sending back still had significant toner in them because they didn't weigh much less than the newer ones. I always choose, "save ink and toner" on my print menu, but since the machine is only counting sheets, that means I'm sending back unused toner. I found your video clear, easy to follow, and most helpful.

Isn't STR starter, vs STD which I would think was standard? Not that it matters much, but it probably means the toner level indicator will go down faster.

For it to work, it is important (ESSENTIAL!) that the 5-second press on the asterisk button place (*) is done while the red light on the cancel button (X) is still on.

so what does the reset actually mean ? does your toner catridges need replacing or not ? and if there is a bit of toner left then how do we know its run out?

How do I know when they really are empty ? I am partially color blind so while I will notice the black getting dim, combinations of other colors changing may not be apparent to me and even if I do detect a change, I may not know which toner is causing the deficiency.

Thanks for sharing this. I read other sites that said to hit the * key...but I could never find it. I purchased a new toner set from Amazon and it wouldn't recognize the replacement. Followed your instructions, reset the Black (need to re-insert my original and just reset it for longer life). I'll keep my replacement toner cartridges and cancel my return. Save me big $$$. Thanks.

I think you may have mispoken on the cartridge designations. I believe it goes more like this.... STD= Standard HC= High Capacity STR= Starter

I had a new toner stored a year ago, and the printer forced me to change it because it was empty, apparently it is stuck in "no toner" or "replace with new". I put in the new toner, and it didn't work, nothing. I turned the printer off and on nothing. Perform this operation and voila! Thanks Sir !!

This is my first ever post re a youtube video, so the fact that i am giving a response is praise in itself. Before finding this video i tried user guides and lots of other suggestions found online. I find it almost criminal that brother try and force users to replace the cartridges before they have really run out. Whe i did replace the toner it would not acknowledge the new cartridge. reset toner levels did the trick. many thanks.

We've had this printer for 4 years now and are still on our starter cartridges for all colors except the Black. I just reset them for the third time last night, and I've been resetting it for High Capacity setting every time. Granted, we don't use much color, but this goes to show how useless the aspects on the machine are. And a major Kudo's to Charles for discovering and creating this video. The video is accurate, easy to follow, and Charles doesn't make any assumptions that a viewer might not understand.

STR is NOT Standard size. STR is for the STARTER cartridges that come with the unit when it is new. STD is for the Standard size.
