This video is a informative video on what entails in resizing 5.3 ls rods with ARP bolts these are cracked cap rods. I will take you through the ins and outs on properly resizing these rods.

Watching your techniques. What's the grit of the hones ? I take it that the eccentric movement is normal. Just used my dial bore indicator on a cracked 4.7 Chrusler rod that spun, and now measures .003 out of round, so paperweight ?

Have to disagree with the power ratings. I’d say 600-700 with decent tune is about the cut off where you’re not rolling the dice. But plenty making more than that for a long time. Crank is good for far more than that. Although it will start to flex around 1000+. Which isn’t good.

Thanks so much for the great video .....if it was a Gen 1 Chevy before the resize do you have to face the Caps before re sizing ? ......also are there other books you can download to give us specs for say cranks , bore size, lifter bore size etc etc? Brett

Thanks Brett we appreciate the support man! Yes traditionally we would surface the caps in our cap grinder and then re-torque and hone to size. As far as books to download im not sure on. How ever if you contact Mahle Clevite and request a catalog there bearing books have all the specs in them for various vehicles and also supply alot of torque specs. Never seen the kwik way hone before. I have always ran Sunnen. Will it run Sunnen mandurals?

Great vid just wondering after resizing do you still use the stock size bearing ?

The outside diameter of the bearings is the stock size. The inside diameter of the bearing depends on the crankshaft journal size.

Great video! Time to start new ways to machine these rods. Incidentally some of the correct 350 engines also use powdered metal cracked cap rods. What do you charge to resize those??

Why bother to spend the money for the bolts and then also pay the labor to install them and re size them ? wouldn't it be better to just buy a forged set of rods ? I mean if you were the machinist and just your time or a buddy doing you a favor the cost of a set of bolts is a no brainer but SHIT who wants to pay machinist labor rates for a marginal upgrade that is vastly inferior to just getting a low cost set of 4340 rods ? Now I can see where a shady machinist would push this upgrade because its mostly labor and if it fails he gets a repeat customer that needs a lot of expensive engine work done. This is like telling a crewman on a nuclear submarine that sinks to the bottom of the ocean to simply take a deep breath and swim to the surface .. no worries
