However after having a console for years and years it’s not too unrealistic to have to disassemble it. My ps4 Is about a decade old, and I’m just now having to disassemble to clean it and reapply thermal paste. But before now I’ve never had to disassemble it.

The reason you buy a console is so you can plug and play and not worry about optimizing the settings, hardware maintenance etc. It was supposed to be just, Ok the game is available for my device I can download it/put the disc in and I should be able to play as soon as it loads, But thats slowly going away, Day one patches were still fine but hardware maintenance, Not providing enough storage for more than 4 games all while making people pay for online service is making me feel that waiting 2 years to play an exclusive game isn't that long.

@@techbro_4309Liquid metal is an effective heat conductor by itself, however, thermal compound is comparatively poor. For using thermal compound, it’s mandatory that the heatsink makes good contact, with the compound filling in uneven spots. With liquid metal, the heatsink need not have such tight contact, or potentially any physical contact, as the liquid metal can transfer heat by itself. If overheating does occur with regular thermal compound, I suspect that the issue may be with the heatsink being made in such a way that it doesn’t contact the die surface well.

Not at all a gimmick. Liquid metal is superior to every other thermal paste out there bar none. The only Con is that it doesn't last as long (about 1 year vs 5 years for thermal paste) and very conductive so if you don't spread it perfectly and isolate it then you will cause problems to any component that uses it. I predicted this would be an issue. I think anyone with knowledge of liquid metal cooling knew this was coming. I expected it sooner at first, but when I became aware of the amount Sony was using for their chips, I changed opinion, and figured it would definitely last a lot longer, perhaps even the 5-6 year lifespan, and possibly, but unlikely, near indefinitely. But I was right in some of my initial predictions. First of all, the vertical bar horizontal thing, and secondly, about drying out. I’ve been keeping up with my friends PS5 in order to maintain it, but I’ve also let him know that I’m not a big fan of having to work with liquid metal. It’s working below a sword of damocles. But at the same time, I’m happy that Sony is pushing the envelope- and perhaps better designs for liquid metal cooling will come to market, even amongst PCs.

Sucks that nobody really has like, a direct tear down video for ps5, showing how to clean it, and per say what would the difference be between respreading this Liquid Metal, and cleaning it off completely and applying brand new Liquid Metal? Etc etc. this thing is complex to maintain.

@Tronicsfix So, I have been doing my own maintenance on my consoles ever since the PS3. Doing my own cleaning, replacing thermal paste, thermal pads. I have a PS5 and a Series X. I have had them since launch. But I am nervous to take them apart and do anything to them. Especially the PS5 (since it contains Liquid Metal). I know I'm gonna have to buckle down and do it eventually. My question is: how often should this be done? Some say the Liquid Metal can last the life of the system but I'm also seeing online that people are saying if you've had a PS5 since launch, it's probably time to replace some things to restore that cooling efficiency. Educated answers would be greatly appreciated if @Tronicsfix cannot get back to me on this

Hey man love your videos, they have helped me a bunch of times 😆 so i was wondering about the liquid metal, i do not have any issues with my Ps5 (old model) But if i get them and have to check this. Is it enough to respread and/or add more liquid metal or is it better to clean it off and change it completely? And if so how to best remove it and what to use to spread it? 😁

It is a q tip - for anyone wondering it's from Thermal Grizzly Conductonaut packs of LM. No weird secrets. That also looks like a very big pool of LM to go back into the ps5. Be worried about shorting that... should be more like painted surface... I'm surprised ps5s are coming with liquid metal, and seemingly NOT bothering to use nickel coated copper... I guess that's planned obsolescence for you to make you get repairs when it dries.

@OccamsRazorfy
@OccamsRazorfy 6 ай бұрын
You probably should, mine is the same age and was running hot (fan always at higher speeds and over all system got jittery and slow). I cleaned as much from the outside that I could vacuumed and blew compressed air. But took it apart anyway to give it a good cleaning. It was pretty dirty inside and the thermal paste was crusty and dried out. The heat sink was half way clogged with dust. I gave everything a good cleaning with IPA and compressed air and applied new thermal paste, it’s now running like it is brand new. Taking apart and cleaning things is just part of the deal with high heat electronics that need moving air to cool.

Thermal Paste on a PS5 is a BAAAAAD IDEA I've seen PS5 got overheating really quick because some dude change Liquid Metal for Regular Thermal Paste, it's just not enough to dispel all the heat. There's a reason why PS Engineers choose to use Liquid Metal instead of Regular Thermal Paste on the PS5 🤷🏻

This youtuber did the first part, and the ps5 shut down quick from overheating. An extra fan won't make a difference considering how much more conductive of heat LM is than Thermal Paste. The only way it MIGHT work is if u managed to change the cooler itself to something much better at heat dissipation and that's something Sony would have to do, designing a whole new cooler, and basically a new ps5.

@@asutora.5363 In theory and practice you can replace it with normal thermal paste. It will be hotter. Besides, the heatsink and fan sucks so much that It needs to be applied with Liquid metal to transfer and dissipate the heat faster or else your ps5 will shutdown to prevent overheating. Sony needs to redesign their heatsink/fan so that regular thermal paste would work as an alternative. Liquid metal is dangerous if it drips to the pcb outside the chip.

This could've been avoided if they just used ptm7950, which is an industrial grade phase changing thermal pad. It performs identically to liquid metal, and due to the phase change when heated, it literally makes better contact by pushing out any air bubbles and imperfections over time.
