Thanks very much, I was lucky enough to buy a whole tool chest from an English woodworker and it included one of these. I knew it was some kind of plane but had no idea what exactly it was for. I now also know what plane the bundle of irons in the box belong to! Thanks for an excellent and very helpful video. PS I personally agree about keeping some of the patina as that's half the appeal of a tool like this, at least for me

Thanks so much for the information. I’m just getting ready to use my beautiful antique plough plane. 😊

Great Presentation and tutorial. Just a slight word of advice that someone else gave me some years back. Use a screwdriver that's the same width as your screw , especially on brass. Great advice on leaving the patina.

Thanks for the pointers on the potential skate issues. Never considered any of them beforehand…..

Thank you for sharing this video. I have just been given several planes, one with blade damage as someone tried to fix it. Blade ground on a hand grinder if I had to guess. Apart from that I am really looking forward to trying to sort them out. This video is surely going to help. Cheers.

Great tool, just got one but it benefits from a handle for long window grooving eg sash window party bead housing.thank so much. The wooden tool is better than metallic versions. Skew blade fillisters for rebates are even better at cutting wood.

Thanks so much...have just acquired one and will be working on a non-planar skate this week!

Thanks for a great video, very helpful since I just bought one of these of ebay in lovely condition. Mine is an Atkins plane made in Birmingham (UK), I picked it up for £25, no other bidders, what is special is that it has a full set of 8 Atkins irons, and both the irons and the plane are stamped with the original owners name. I haven't used it yet. One question is that I saw that you waxed the wedge, is it ok to do this? My wedges could use some wax but I was thinking it might make them pop out too easilty in use?

Does the skate really need to be perfectly aligned side to side? The skate doesn't provide any horizontal alignment.

Do all plow planes have a depth stop? I recently bought one that looks very much like what you are working with except that there is no depth stop and it doesn't look like anything is missing or any signs that there used to be one. There is no makers mark that I can see but it does have a James Cam iron as is about twice as long as your example. Thanks, Paul

Can you also tune up the blades of a plough plane?
@WoodenPlanes Жыл бұрын
You definitely can. Sharpen them just like a chisel. Flatten the back and then sharpen the bevel. The bevel angle isn't important. Use whatever angle the iron currently has. It doesn't need to sharpened to a mirror finish. 1000 grit is fine.

I'm coming late to the party here, but I noticed something on this plane worth mentioning. This fence looks like it came from another plane as the body has tapered groves adjacent the fence arm holes (groves for lack of the correct term) to accept wedges to lock the arms. Agree?
@WoodenPlanes Жыл бұрын
Collectors call that "brace and suspenders," as in why would you wear a belt and suspenders at the same time? Some makers added both so that... you could choose later what you want? No one really knows why they did it. But I agree it looks odd.

Abraham, thanks for all of your videos. On other restorations you have used Murphy's Oil Soap to clean the wood of the plane saying it was gentle and then used paste wax. Did you think Murphy's would have been too aggressive on this plane? If so, why? Thanks Don
@WoodenPlanes Жыл бұрын
My thinking on this has changed over the years. I used to use oil soap all the time but I've changed to paste wax for almost everything now. There's nothing wrong with Murphy's, but I save it for the planes that are in really bad condition. Either is fine, but I'm erring on the side of "gentle is best" whenever I can.

Hello, I have a question concerning wooden threads. As I understand, oil will make the wood swell...how do I grease the threads?

i have a a & e Baldwin plow plane. what glue to use on small crack in screw knob????? thks
@WoodenPlanes3 жыл бұрын
If the crack is stable, I would just leave it. If it expands when you tighten the knob then use wood glue on it. Good luck!

I know you mention to avoid planes with states out of line, however do you have any advice on straightening out the front skate being out about the width if the skate?
@WoodenPlanes4 жыл бұрын
The way I’ve done it is remove the skates and then use a rabbit plane to flatten the surfaces that the skates attach to until both are in alignment. Good luck! Let me know how it goes
@williammeehan4 жыл бұрын
Working Wooden Planes I think the wood is straight but the metal skate has bent slightly.

I like this video and everything you said and did until.............At 18:51 I cringed.......that little straight blade screwdriver for that large screw! That's why the slot in that screw looks like that! The rule is use the largest screwdriver that will properly fit the screw. You would have been able to turn it easily, and not have the trouble that it seemed you had.

I inherited one of these from my grandfather. Thank you for the video. :) Now I know how to use it. Only thing that annoyed me in your video, was your use of that metal tape measure. Ugh. Go get a wooden yardstick - it is more precise, and it will not clash as much with these antiques.

I have to beg you to remove that music track! The video is so informative, exactly the help I need-but I had to turn it off after 13 minutes, that endless loop of crappy acoustic doctor’s office “hold” music!!! I can’t believe I’m writing this, but it is unbearable. That “music” is copyright-free for A REASON. Please take it off. I can see you have great info, but I can’t/won’t watch any more.

I know, I know! I've come to hate the music on my early videos.I thought I needed some kind of background music but looking back, it sucked. But there's no way to remove it. Don't worry, my new videos have no music.

Isn't that the Paul Sellers track?! Agree, after a while it starts to irritate. Great video though, thanks!
