I learn many things from him while I stayed for 10 years there in Japan. That old of an sword. The first thing you look for is under the handle. Who made it. That’s the first thing. If it was a well known Sword Smith. I mean a well known one. Don’t restore it. You do better sending it back to Japan to have it done there. Why... It will be worth it’s weight in gold. Well, before you try to restore an antique weapon, you should always check on the shape of the blade, then use whetstone, there is atleast 14 type of sharpening stones you need to get, and for the finest should be at least 30 000 grit, then polish it further, there is a lot of how to reveal the hamon of the sword, but i don't recommend you to use grinders, it will certainly ruined the blade shape and ruined it's past heat treatment. Most importantly, you're probably scammed, learn more about Katana before you purchase and restore it. Note : in handling antique blades, you must always learn on how to sharpen them correctly, without mutilating ( destroying ) the blade. The way you sharpen this blade, definitely will destroy just any type of swords ( swords are not kitchen knifes ). Note 2 : there is less users in the internet wanting to share their experiences, but i wanted to help you anyways, i hope you read this comment.

This is going to take a while. Just maling that clear now. First. This sword was not a katana. The blade geometry is wrong. The ornamentation is wrong. The handle wrap is wrong. This was a Chinese sword. Second. Never take an angle grinder to an old blade, it is almost impossible to maintain the geometry and edge alignment. Third. The steel should never reach blue across the entire blade. You want an even straw colour for the best edge. Blue and black is way too hot. And you didn't even try to quench and temper. It is now most likely incredibly brittle. Katana use differential hardening and have a pronounced hamone to show here the hardened edge becomes the softer spine. Kindly, someone with a degrees in medieval and Chinese military history. (Specialised in arms and armour) Now go learn the difference between a katana and Dao and how to make them properly. (Not trying g to be offensive, just seaw an opportunity to teach something.)
@reset81404 жыл бұрын
Finally, the best comment I've read so far in this comment section. It doesn't look to have anything in common with a katana nor a Japanese-made sword. Too crudely made, most likely stamped out of a sheet of metal and then grinded edges on it. And yes, he lacks knowledge on how/what a true restoration process is, but this might've been his first attempt and can, hopefully, lead him to knowledge on how to properly do it. Maybe experienced people here are willingly to help and provide some tips, rather than just bashing and crying over basically a mass-produced piece of metal lol.

A real Japanese sword, or in other words a sword with an engraved "name" on it, can be worth handred thousands of dollars if it is carefully re-sharpened, even if it has rusted. However, if it is sharpened with a grinder, it will immediately lose its value. The handle also has historical value, so if a Japanese antique dealer were to see it, he or she might be shocked. Well, since it is a tuna knife, such a possibility is unlikely, though. '`,、(´∀`) '`,、

@Bankable27903 жыл бұрын
@@18IMAMGODINA yeah but how could you tell?
@18IMAMGODINA3 жыл бұрын
@@Bankable2790 Easily by watching oxidation colors on the steel , as it approaches temperatures high enough to remove hardness it will start changing colors from light straw , to straw color to bronze to purple to deep blue and clear blue is when it pretty much lost its hardness. How do you think people harden different things ? Just wild guessing game? No . They knew of the oxidation colors on the steel and after quenching(Hardening) they would have tempered the steel by heating it up slowly to a certain color depending on the use , for example something like an axe would needed to be tempered(slowly heated up to a temperature after quench to relax the steel) to a bronze color while knives are tempered at light straw and straw colors (Knives like bushcrafts knives , different knives are tempered to different temperatures also different steels are tempered to different temperatures ) Also you wouldnt be able to just quench something and then leave it like that or it would crack , even katanas were "Tempered" after quenching or else the blade would just snap in 2 or milion different pieces because its too hard to be usable, imagine that steel is like glass after quench and after temper it is a little softer but a lot tougher.

That was... painful to watch. After reading the comments I'm glad i wasn't the only one who noticed it wasn't a totally legit katana. But mate, a grinder is definitely not the best tool to restore Japanese swords of any kind as they remove too much material and Japanese swords don't have much to begin with. A great alternative is rust remover liquids to start, or a Sand Blaster. Then sanding to polish, 600 grit to 5000. Edit: also when making a katana, tanto or wakisashi handle. Time in detail is paramount. Putting that extra love and effort into the choice of timber, guard, pommel, leather, and wrappings brings the sword to life.
@18IMAMGODINA3 жыл бұрын
No they don't , they remove as much as you are able to remove , reason why grinders are bad is because usually they are not flat enough , but for removing rust its perfect, and then finish it up on a sander or a stationary grinder if you have one with big wheels

The moment he brought out the angle grinder.... this was no longer a restoration, but a demolition job. He started with something that may have had value and replaced it with something that resembles a 14-year-old kids homemade sword. Had he gone a different route he would likely have destroyed it too. A craftsman would have taken note of the binding, tried to restore the tsuka, and given the blade an electrolysis cleaning followed by wet stone sanding, and traditional polish. That sword, if 150 years old, should have been documented before "restoration" commenced. It is clearly not Japanese. But it may have had value restored by a craftsman. Now it's reduced to a fruit cutting tool at best.

Hello my name is laden I was hoping to know if I were willing to sell the 150 year old Japanese Sword

I love how you made it into a toffee sword when u heated it with the blow torch and tried to quench it! Also all the digging in marks from the grinder for ‘airflow’ over the blade when ur chopping soft things like carrots or a stray slug in half! Well done 😁

After seeing this, I'm pretty sure the sword is someone's backyard scrap project that got thrown away. No way was it an antique of any value.

A lot of sweat and hard work put into this restoration, but this is not how the katana supposed to restored first thing first the handle that definitely not the katana and clean up the blade too much angle grinder .
@paulleitner83054 жыл бұрын
this is not a katana

Too much angle grinder? Try zero. No one in their right mind uses power tools to repair a katana. Thankfully this wasn't a katana.

This is not a Japanese sword. This is a sword with long edge.

It’s a chokuto basically a straight one sided blade. It’s like a katana without the curve
@hydragaming92033 жыл бұрын
Well actually i agree with u...coz the way i look the sword look like old thailand sword...
@ssv863 жыл бұрын
@@Sithnix : You, sir, are correct in that it is styled like a chokuto. However, chokuto were out of fashion over 300 years ago. Even then, chokuto were often not both straight edge AND hira zukuri. This video claims the sword is "150 years old," which would mean its nihontou contemporaries would be shinogi zukuri for katana length. Hira zukuri was typically reserved for shorter wakizashi and tanto. Unokubi zukuri was typically for naginata. Shobu zukuri fell out of fashion already. Don't get me started on the koshirae. This is why you are incorrect. The sword looks like a chokuto but it is NOT a chokuto. Nor is it a Japanese sword. The sword in the video is either a Thai Daab or Burmese Dha.

He didn't get that blade hot enough, now the metals weak as hell, the metal lost it's temp when it turned blue, he should've took the tourch and layed that flame directly on the metal till it was red hot, good props for trying bud,still looks better than it did before,

I think it's a prop sword, for samurai movies to keep cost down they just used straight steel bars. No loss here.

Эта закалка просто "лучшее" что я видел в своей жизни! А заточка на куске наждачки, которая даже не прикреплена к бруску явно позволит добиться такой остроты лезвия, что меч будет резать волос на расстоянии!!!
