Good ideas here. To stop sanding part’s you want pristine, try aluminium tape. That stuff is stronger than masking tape. Great video buddy.

Thanks for posting this I've bought two old rods that could do with a clean up I guessed I would need sand paper but I wouldn't have know about the wood filler I would have mixed the cork dust with PVA glue now I'm thinking wood filler with the cork dust could be worth a try tight lines brother 👍

Nice job. There’s a part of me that likes the weathered look, but keeping my rods in great shape is important as well. Thanks for sharing, I like spoon butter as a protector on mine. Half wax half mineral oil.

Thank you my bro for a outstanding and very informative lesson, I was told by a other rod builder that I should use wood glue and cork powder to do what you’ve done with just wood filler. Well I did use wood glue and cork dust l, I covered the whole cork end all 8” total and the 2.5” fore grip, I let it dry fully and tried to sand to finish off, but as you guessed wood glue does not finish as smooth like yours did, so I thought ok mineral spirts should soften it up so I can remove it, nope it just soften the cork and I tried sanding but not coming off, so I used the side of a small putty knife and now I have a dented and damaged cork end. So I just ordered the same wood filler you use, glad they have here in the states, and I’ll follow your teaching on the rest of my cork filling. Thank you for a great learning experience, better then the way I was told for sure.

@@charleswest1 my bro I used the timber mate wood filler you used and it came out a lot better then the glue did, but when i removed the glue and cork dust it damaged a large part of the cork handle, but I applied the timber mate and worked like you did and it came out way better then I would have thought. Still had some deep groves but it’s my personal rod so no big deal. Your video is sure fire way to protect the corks, and I will be following it from this point on. Thanks my bro great video, I have made sure to follow your channel, thanks again my bro Dan

That's fairly new what about 15 years old or older I just use the cheep dollar tree orange with oxy. Just put your wood putty on with a flat putty spreader me plastic one will do it good. I a nice pole 🎣 you want to see the small darker markings on the wood to keep the value of old fishing Pole's. I only do that to new fishing pole one's because it doesn't matter is not worth much. Is not like is my grandfather stuff. I'm big bamboo poles and wood Cork just fun to do. This was a good video.
