First of all i did watch the whole video for a strange reason. Am an engineer my self and i pay attention to details. Your are one of the roughest persons towards your equipment and tools i have ever seen. Usually i get really upset if i see someone missuses his tools, but i really enjoyed the procedure you follow you kept me wondering what your next move will be. Am well educated nuclear engineer and i have seen educated people not been able to do what you did. After all it's not a Ferrari or a satellite its just a lawn mower. You did the job with the tools you had and the knowledge you had and you had it working. More than half of the guys that make fun of you in the comments wouldn't know were to start from.

Lol! I agree it is just a lawnmower!~ I am trained to work on high performance motorcycles and approach motorcycle repairs MUCH differently. On lawn mowers, I rough things up a bit to show that any hack mechanic can fix a lawnmower in his or hers backyard and for the entertainment. Thanks for watching!

Lightweight is good and what did I use it for it’s a lawnmower kzbin.infoUgkxTPN04aT-Qdjr_KS3ql7ng8wnU3wwsCqk also recommend Yes it is lightweight so hence not as robust as our old one. But if you take care it does the job really well.

I recently bought a used 917 series with this same deck: it was quite rusted out around the hanging tab on the right front edge: it was only hanging on by ~50% of the surrounding metal, and what was left was less than was ~50% of original thickness; but at least the position was preserved! I thought about welding it; even discussed with a friend of mine (who's worked as a welder); we were both concerned about the thin metal versus the thick bracket...😳 I poked around my workbench, and found I had a piece of sheet metal ~1/10" thick (didn't put a caliper to it), that was big enough to overlap the really rusted out area by quite a bit and thin enough I could still trim it down by hand, and get it to contour to the curve, so I attached it with a lot of blind rivets from the inside to reconstruct/ reinforce the wall of the deck! ☺ the real problem was that that tab is not coming out perpendicularly to the wall, so just snipping a couple pieces of angle iron to brace it, wasn't going to work! 😮 But I had some old Stanley door hinges, and I realized, that if I bolted one on each side, they can lock in the angle pretty well! 😊 (it didn't have to be extremely precise; it's supposed to be parallel to the other tab, but, it's a loose joint with that swinging bar.) So, I prepped with a goodly amount of wire brushing; pre-painted; did quite a bit of drilling in place; wrestled those rivets in, to patch it up, and then some more drilling, for bolting on the reinforcement hinges, then some more painting; looking much better (the P.O. had done a lot mulching' without cleanig); I cleaned up more of the easy to acces areas, and used up the can of Rustoleum, but, I had to get it back together before forgot how I took it apart! What I forgot to do was to re-assemble in order of DE-creasing difficulty, so had to undo several links, but all back together! ...but still had to wait a day or two for the new filters to arrive: the air filters were fairly clogged up/rotted; the oil was almost chocolate milk! I knew it had been running fairly well, just wanted to get some clean oil on a good filter, before I finally put it to work today! Yay! Rides pretty smooth! Too bad it's built for someone who is 5'6"! 😉

After clearing out all the loose rust and lawn lettuce from underneath the deck I would put on a couple cans of the rubberized undercoat spray, If that isn't in the budget, brush on a couple coats of used motor oil every time the deck off for cleaning and servicing. At least at the beginning and at the end of the mowing season.

wolf: I've had my craftsman for 21 years now. I cut 3 of my neighbors lawns for 17 year gratis. And mine. The only things replaced so far are tires, and belts. I changed things years ago and will not buy new if it can be fixed. I also had a 1986 Dodge Ram for 29 years that never failed to start. Things were starting to get costly to repair, so I bought a 2003 Silverado that looks like new. I'll drive it until I croke.

Another tip on keeping your mower deck last a little longer at the end of every season clean the grass off get a paint brush and put Chainsaw Bar Oil spread it all over it like your painting the whole bottom of it and it will soak in and keep it from rusting out did the blades every night all underneath you can do a little bit on the top if you want but doesn't really need to be done mostly underneath.

My Craftsman CV16 (16.5!) hand-me-down is the generation previous and so old that nobody makes videos about that thing. After a master fix with duct tape last week the thing finally just quit mid-yard. El finito. Something in the ignition pooped. So I'm done. Now it's a downhill racer only. I know when to quit. (Yes, they do say 'quitters never mow' but so be it!) Poor old thing. Else I had ALL the fun watching you dog it. Ya done great! I'll send it to you for parts.

I rescued an E-Z 19.5 horse opposed piston Vanguard 42" mower that was on it's way to the dump.The deck was GONE! Ordered a new deck shell BUT I poured those silly 'mulching' vent holes around the spindles full of epoxy resin so now no more rust starting places and I can blow the deck clean instead of having a bunch of junk on top. Took new spindles BUT I drilled the legs out and ran bolts with nuts through so I can get them back off without breaking the legs off with the self-tapping bolts from the factory. It has rear side rollers and just replaced the factory jobs with Ebay Club Cadets with grease fittings. Painted the under side of the deck too and all the hardware transferred over with a little straightening and lubing. Pulled the tranny and lubed it too. All I lack is some steering box work BUT it cuts like a carpet with Gator blades.. Good job, Jeff! The old deck was collapsed where the spindles bolted on.Not now!

When tightening the right mandrel pulley you mentioned the threads must have been stripped. The reason it was hard to tighten is because the end of the nut got smashed by the sledge hammer when you were removing the shaft. The smashed end made the nut like a lock nut.

When you use the nut on the shaft to protect the threads, try running the nut down flush with the top of the shaft. That will effectively make the nut and shaft a solid bar to hit with the hammer and protect the threads on the shaft while also preventing the top of the nut from mushrooming inward and messing up the threads in the nut. From the looks of things, you should donate that mower to Ernest so he can mow his yard!

I like to use a thick layer of spray on bed-liner for the underside of the deck and engine paint on the top of the deck. The grass doesn't stick to the bed-liner as easily and the bed-liner also resists chipping when hit by gravel and small rocks.

Although the paint job could of been better, you don’t see the deck anyway and I would of put some type of rust protection under the deck to keep it from rusting any further. other than that good job. You saved a lot of money by restoring that one.

For what they are those LT1000s are good little workhorses aren't they? Easy to work on and the parts are readily available. I just rebuilt my deck after 16 years. I was going to scrap the old spindles, but you got me thinking that if the Chinese replacements turn out to be junk, I may later decide to rebuild the original spindles. I'm sure that would be a pain in the ass, but it might be worth it.

Yes I agree, The parts are cheap and easy to get and pretty easy to work on for the most part. My personal mower is one of these

Interesting. However, to preserve the underside of your deck, wouldn't hurt to paint it with black rust oleam paint in order for grass acid to not eat the deck underneath it and keep the deck in good shape for many years to come. I do this to mine, and the decks are still in good condition.

the deck will last about as long as the rest of the mower.

Joe Scheller Agreed, however, as with anything else, mataince as well as keeping the deck painted outside as well as underneath goes a long, long way. This also includes greesing your spindles, and keeping your blades as sharp as a razor.

Is there really grass acid that eats away at the deck? I was thinking only moisture from grass clumps under the mower deck.

You may have to take apart the pivot bracket, bolt,washers etc. to derust,relube and reasseble. Also, make sure your return spring on the deck for the pivot bracketis there and functioning

a good air chisel is a good way to get rid of rust before dealing with rotting steel. Also welding entails good weld not tacks but good video. Looks like idaho.
@dave1135
@dave1135 5 жыл бұрын
No hate, but when you weld, once you start your arc, just hold it steady and go back and forth, remembering to pull your bead, not push it, and just let her rip, remembering to adjust your amperage and wire speed for the material you're welding. I have a flux core welder also, and with patience, you can get fairly decent welds

One good rock will punch a hole through that rotted POS deck. We have a place called Dupies that has 10 times the stuff you have and decks galore, many like new. I wouldnt have bothered with that wreck. I work on this stuff every day and have a modest scrap pile. I could probably sell most of those mowers as long as they dont smoke or locked up. 99% of the mowers I repair are fuel related issues. People here just push them out by the road when they wont start. Got one last year that was only run one season, than sat for two years. The brake cable was froze and the owner thought the engine was seized. I had it running and sold as soon as I replaced the cable. I fix and sell for my RC hobby. Planes, boats,cars, helicopters. I am retired/ disabled and this affords me my hobby. I love both my hobbys. Stay away from rocks!

Given my experience with a pair of similar Craftsman riding lawn mowers that had been donated to our church I would have junked the deck. Never could get either one adjusted to not scalp the lawn.
