How To Restring A Radio With Fishing Cord - Dial Cord Repair

This is my attempt to show how to string a radio using fishing cord as dial tuning cord. I hope maybe you will get something useful from this . The radio is a Truetone DC3914 that I got at Western Auto about 50 years ago .
By the way , I did an alignment (by ear ) and now the hum I mentioned in the video is considerably better . I am thinking that at some point in the future I may add a small capacitor to improve the tone . This can be done at the speaker or volume pot .

I’ve also thought 💭 of fishing 🐠 line, and dental 🦷 floss for radio 📻 dial cord repairs. I just didn’t think 🤔 it was professional 👩‍🏫. Did ya replace the capacitors in this, too? They get out of tolerance after a period of years. I just subbed to your KZbin channel!! Your friend, Jeff.

Thanks Jeff for subscribing . When I worked in a tv shop ,years ago , fishing line was what we used to restring radios in floor model stereos . We never had any problems with it . I usually change the capacitors that need changing only. If they don't need changing I would wait . Since this is a hobby for me now I just want the radio to play like it did when it was new . This saves a few dollars here and there . I play this radio in my little shop ( next to my house ) just about every day .

@@theyoutubetestchannel Always remember, if you’re hearing👂electrolytic capacitor hum, this is the sound of one ☝️ or more electrolytic capacitors on their way towards failure 😞. Ya can continue to use the radio 📻, the capacitors giving fair warning ⚠️, but, one ☝️ day, the capacitor(s) will completely fail. This could be a loud POP!! This can also blow out everything on the board. Electrolytic capacitor hum is the result of the electrolytes in the capacitors, drying out. This leads to leaky, or lossy capacitors. As you continue to use the radio 📻 with bad capacitors, the hum will get progressively louder, and failure 😞 is eventual, but sure to happen. Also, do NOT wire capacitors in backwards. Once you turn the ON/OFF volume knob to “ON”, POP will go your brand new capacitor, and probably the rest of them on the board. Sorry 😞 on the long comment, and the emojis (I seem to like 👍 them ), it’s the only practical way to explain things. Your friend, Jeff.
