To know which size to use: 1) Buy some thread pitch gauges and a caliper. 2) The markings (for material grade/strength) on the nuts and bolts can help you determine if the measurement is a metric or SAE. Other words for SAE is standard or American. 3) Some hardware stores have free measurement tools along the nuts and bolts section where you can insert your nut or bolt to check for size. This is the easiest way to find the size, but will only have common sizes. 4) You can also search for common bolt and nut sizes by searching for torque spec charts for nuts and bolts. These charts can give you an idea if you incorrectly used the caliper and thread pitch gauges, which can certainly happen. Using these tools take PRACTICE.

I asked my question, then saw this post. Thank you for that info. This is a catch 22. Two concerns would be 1). What if you screw up the first pass? How do you correct that? Got to the next size up?....and B). How do you practice something like this?? This is a fascinating skill, given the possibilities it can open up. I suppose there's a third question... What if you're in a fabrication scenario, and you want to make a threaded hole, yet the hole isn't drilled yet? Sorry for the "noob" questions, but I just came across a scenario like this, and wondered how it was resolved.

There are charts online re drill bit sizes which I have on my mobile phone, it’s so infrequent that I need to use a tap or die that I forget. I think all M series bolts are metric as are the fittings on most cars. He didn’t show how to find the thread count through or explain the different taps for through holes and bling holes. I think this reply might be teaching my grandma to suck eggs though and you probably know a lot more than I do.

There is something I don't quite understand about taps and dies (have never had one in my hands). Both tools seem to have cutting faces, outwards, or inwards respectively. Threading cuts spirals right? How do these tools cut spirals instead of parallel circles when you turn them? And how do they cut spirals in a way that makes nuts and bolts match exactly? That is, that both spirals have the same exact angle?
