I’m a beginner that just bought 8 of these chairs to reupholster. Your video was the first to pop up when I searched for a tutorial. Thank goodness it did! Such an amazing job of step by step instruction! I’m especially pleased with your diagram of how to measure for the amount of fabric needed. I can’t wait to start!

Mario, Thank you so much for the nice note! You may also be interested in a video I did on tufting (I actually built an ottoman from the ground up). It's a long video but you can skip to the tufting part for your purposes. In retrospect, I think I could have used a little larger diameter foam cutter but it may give you some useful tips on how to approach your chair. I love reupholstering things and have a category that addresses a lot of the projects that I've recovered around my house. All the best to you and your wife with your chair! You can subscribe to my website too so that you don't miss any of my DIY projects in the future. www.reneeromeo.com My goal is to teach how to do things (almost) like a pro. Happy upholstering, Renee

It's done already and it looks awesome. It's actually an accent chair but no arm rest so bulkier than yours but turned put fantastic. $10 last chance at Goodwill and material on sale total under $50. 😊 Next time I will purchase an electric stapler to make it easier. Thanks again.

T. Ilic, You NEED an electric stapler. It's not too expensive and it really saves your hand from getting sore. I 'm so happy you gave new life to a perfectly good chair. Glad I could help too. Now you need to try something more ambitious. It's not as hard as it looks, is it? Renee

Enjoyed the video. I've watched many others and you gave some great tips. One teeny thing, I'd love to see someone make a video recovering rolled back parson chairs without doing pleats! I'm rcurrently recovering my chairs and I really don't want to do pleats.
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 6 жыл бұрын
Erica Thompson, Thanks so much! Your suggestion would be more like a slip cover for the back. It's a great idea - you could sew the rolled area together and then all you would have to do is staple it in place on the bottom. I've done many slip covers in the past and this would work out really well here too. It would also save you from having to staple through many layers of pleats. Great idea! I will try to incorporate this into a future video. All the best, Renee

This is a brilliant video! Thank you so much for all the detail and explanation.. I bought an entire bolt of fabric about 6 months ago with the intention of making slip covers for my dinning chairs but having the rolled tops like yours do I was afraid of attempting it.. I’ve seen a bunch of these videos but today you came up in my recommendations and I’m so glad I saw this.. now instead of making slip covers I feel comfortable enough to just use the fabric to reupholster them.. thank you so much.. these chairs look lovely.. I’ll be doing mine though in white fabric with a skirt down to the floor and using my embroidery machine to put my initials NKB in cursive lettering on the front side of the seat back. Thank you for the inspiration to finally start this process..🌹
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 6 жыл бұрын
Nicole Kennedy-Beaumont, Your 'new' chairs are going to be lovely too! I've made slipcovers in the past and I've found that the sewing has to be flawless in order for the slipcover to lay in place properly. It's a time consuming task - more so than reupholstering them (believe it or not). You're right in saying that the rolled top presents another design problem for a slipcover. Reupholstering them is.less time consuming and more forgiving. I hope you post the finished product for all of us to see! The embroidery is going to be gorgeous. Thanks for taking the time to send such a nice note. All the best, Renee

Dear Beth, Thank you! I always have a kitty or two wandering around my sewing room - its such an interesting place for them to explore. Too bad I haven't been able to get them to do tricks on camera yet! I think I forgot to mention that it's possible to find new tack strip at Joanne Fabrics (locally) so if my method seems easier, you will be able to find the supplies that you need. I would love to see how you made out with yours. Renee

Great DIY I remember when I did my first chair, the most hated part was stripping it down. Love the fabric, what is it? It looks like cord. The computer really did not show it very well.Never did parsons chairs but these are very nice. Upholstery is very hard work and you did a great job, yes they look professional. Now parsons chairs are they just for dinning or could you use them in bed or how about a study?

Nancy, It IS a corduroy fabric and it's very soft. I had a close-up of it but it didn't make the final cut. I have two more to do for my bedroom where I pull them up to a small table for reading or having tea. So comfy too! I think reupholstery takes more patience than anything. Thanks for watching my videos, Renee

Thank god for you.. I’ve been watching videos for over a year and have been so overwhelmed.. I feel brave enough to try now thanks to you.. keep teaching.. it’s a gift.. I winder the back of the chairs rounded part isn’t on mine and I would love that? Is there a way to add that to my Parson? Like a pool noodle or something 😂
@ReneeRomeo
@ReneeRomeo 6 жыл бұрын
Gina Belanger, Thank god for you too! I needed this today!! 💋 You can absolutely do this all you need to do is take it one step at a time. When I'm in the middle of an upholstery project, I try to stay focused on the task at hand - not the bare chair or the fabric that I have yet to cut - just whatever I need to do right then. It REALLY helps! I LOVE your idea of a pool noodle - so creative! I think you could just attach it at either side with a couple of long screws (into the frame), fill in the gap at the top of the chair with loose cotton batting, Then you can cover the entire back (the side that your back goes up against) with a sheet of 3/4 inch fiberfill from the back of the seat, up and over the noodle and staple it to the very back side (just like yu'd do with the fabric). The fiberfill sheeting will make it look seamless (just like mine). Bravo! Love this idea so much! Let me know if I can help any further. I can't wait to see how yours turns out. All the best, Renee

Great question! I never do because the backing of the new fabric rubs against the old fabric and causes it to wear out quickly. The new covering also lays better when it's applied over cotton or polyester batting. Best wishes with your project, Renee
