How to Reupholster the Armrest in Your Car | Wrap Center Console in Vinyl

Does the armrest in your car or truck look like this one - worn down and falling apart? Does your arm feel like it's resting on sandpaper whenever you're driving around? If so, Bill walks you through how to fix this problem by replacing the material on your armrest. We know that all armrests are different, and some are going to be more challenging than others (multiple materials used, integrated cup holders, etc). At a high-level, the process is fairly straightforward, though. Just take your time and think through it before you start ripping it apart and cutting material ;) This same process can work for interior door panels, headrests, and other parts of your vehicle's interior.

The more stitches per inch, the weaker the seam is on vinyl. Less is more. BTW, you did a pretty good job regardless. A top stitch would have finished it off very nicely, but you'll probably need an expensive walking foot sewing machine to do that so you don't have feeding issues and ruin your work.

Looks great! I have a 2010 Honda Civic with same problem except no scews like yours to remove. My driver’s side armeest needs to be replaced but I don’t see any screws to be removed. Do you know where they’re located ? Thanks!🌈

I want to increase the padding of my armrests in my toyota matrix. Its practically a brick. This thing has beed bullitproof and could probably make another 150k miles on the car. That puts me at 7 more years. But being i drive 20-22k a year i want to have some comfortable arm rests.

I am doing a similar project however I am lengthening the arm rest by apporx. 3" to the front by using a piece of wood that will be attached to the top of the plastic part of the arm rest. The top part will need some padding over the wood and top plastic base it will be attached to. All original parts will used just adding the extended top piece. I would be curious as to what would be an approximate cost if you were doing a project such as this. Thank you much for any comments you may be able to make.

That mostly depends on the material that you use. For a small swatch of material, spray glue, foam, and a piece of wood, you're probably looking at around $50.

Thanks much for your response. Didn't think it would be too costly. Your video was very helpful because the armrest you used was very similar to mine on my Focus. I've taken mine off the console already, cut my extension board and all I need to do is find an upholster in the Maumee, Ohio area to do the job.

You seriously left out applying the vinyl to the arm rest??? Also, a staple gun wasn’t listed in the supplies as the beginning. All that said, I did learn a lot.

@ 6:20 he shows applying the vinyl to the armrest. Yes, sometimes we get into a video and then realize that we need an extra tool, or maybe we don't use one that we through we would, but we try to be as thorough as possible. Glad it helped.
