MEK I painted a steering wheel using regular rustoleum and got amazing results. It was on a navigator and I was able to fix sun damage by lightly sanding and then painting with a few light coats.

@@bitemefoker My question exactly. I used SPC's technique for sprucing up some nasty looking cracked and faded leather in my mom's Caddie....and it came out looking like brand new. After doing that, i then discovered about a quarter sized hole in the backseat. So, SPC.....do we need to put a patch over that hole, or will a silicone film as in your video do the trick? I was about to tackle reupholstering the entire back deck over the engine compartment of our 2004 boat. I am SO excited to try this instead! I just found your channel a few days ago. Sarah we list both companies as they each have different colors as far as the cleaner/bonding spray it needs to be used no matter what companies color you use, hope this helps spc mike

It depends on the temperature you're doing it in and the humidity. Silicone glue is very picky when it comes to temperature and humidity, all I can say is that when you lightly touch it and no material is brought up on your finger it's ready. Wow...the silicone thing actually worked and worked well...Easy...I have a 93 vette with only 40.000 miles on it and is almost pristine condition with white leather seats...my parents dog jumped in my car poking a whole in the passenger seat...a couple of years ago i bought a leather repair kit only making the area on the seat worse then it was...I tried this method with the silicone and it worked...I like the idea that it doesn't have to be perfect as it will blend in with the texture of the rest of the seat...Clean ...fast and easy..I ended up doing the other small cracks in both seats...you can't even tell....

I need to repair the very top back of my pontoon seats where the black cover baked them. How is everything holding up? I also have a couple of holes in the foam on the top of the seats. Is permatex the only thing that I need to fill the holes? The holes are probably an inch to inch and a half deep by about the same width.

I sold it years ago but I'm sure there is good info on YT. There is a DAP brand caulk that is good for filling holes and taking paint. They use it for leather repair.

My problem is cracking on the side of the seat where the seat controls are on my 2005 Silverado. I believe that area is actually synthetic despite the seat and back area being leather. With this work for that cracking? Thanks for the awesome videos!

In another video, however, you said that the paint needs to be mixed in into the silicone, otherwise it will "fish eye". How did the spray paint work in this video without "fish eyeing"? I'm trying to understand which way to go - mix the paint into the silicone, or spray the paint on top of clear silicone like in this video.

So I have watched all 3 videos in the series, multiple times, as well as an additional video you put out where you mixed the paint with the RTV silicone before applying the silicone, but I am still just a little unclear as to when exactly in the process to spray on the 1st coat of ColorBond LVP paint. At one point in the video it appears to say to wait 24 hours for the silicone to cure (which I would think would inhibit the paint from bonding to the silicone), but in the "mix the paint with the silicone" video, it appears as if you are painting the silicone while it is still a bit tacky. I really, really don't want to do this wrong... should I be waiting 24 hours before applying the 1st coat of paint to the RTV silicone, or should I spray on the 1st coat while the silicone still has some tack to it? Thanks!

Quick question! I am a Paint Contractor, I know from experience that paint does not stick to silicone. Is that siliconized caulking that you used? Siliconized is a paintable caulk. Just curious because my wife's Lexus seats need some attention. Thanks!

BobinBC I used BMW black 258, I only touched up areas with a q tip and it’s blending perfectly. I also painted a dash trim piece that was peeling. So close to perfect match.

Wow!! Great video. I have a black leather driver seat with a/c aeration holes in leather seat & back. 1) will it clog up the aeration holes? 2) on the side lip, it is broken leather, with long cracks. Caused by sliding down out of seat every day. It is only on the side leather (no aeration holes). Will this bond the broken/cracked leather back together?

It will repair the cracked leather and yes, it will clog the seat ventilation. Any holes that do get clogged before it dries, poke with a toothpick to open them back up. Hope this helps, have a great day. mad Mike the hammer SPC

great job ... I also do these jobs in Italy and you get wonderful results .... American leather is difficult to paint due to the high content of silicone that makes the skin shiny ... we prefer skin from us opaque ... still good work

Great video! Thank you. I am concerned that this repair will either have a silicone delamination issue, or the seat will continue to crack and not feel like soft leather. Can these concerns be eliminated using this technique? Is there better material I can use for my 1962 Cadillac. Seats are just cracking. No holes or thread damage.

I did my door trims that had rips with vinyl compound putty then sprayed them with vht vinyl matt black cans over it. Never knew you can use silicone tube and it makes sense. Whats the adhesion spray you use after the alcohol cleaner?

Hi "Sweet Car Expert", I watched several times each of your 3 videos - thanks! I then bought every item you recommended (hope made you some $$)... then bought exact color of BMW seat ($36 for 4oz bottle) and mixed with the silicone and did your method. Result = the silicone (good idea for flexibility) was a huge problem.. practiced until skilled, and application went well. the problem = it remains skicky.. can't sit on the seat! So had to do (w/ help from local paint store) a workaround: laid on top "shellac primer" (outstanding product - sticks to everything!) but white.. so had paint onto the shellac layers.. if had to do again, would follow all you do except would use DAP caulking with flexible properies -- either SAP's AMP Advanced Modified Polymer (their Waterproof Kitchen, Bath and Plumbing Sealant) or DAP dynalex 230 (Premium Elastomeric Exterior sealant used for Window, Door and Trim). Still thanks big for the outstanding videos - got me to success! 😊

Jeff Parkin great question this is a DIY project so if you decide to have someone else do it it may be best just to buy the manufactures seat covers and replace them with new, it will be less costly for you but if you do tackle the project you can save a boatload of money with the DIY we share here.

I am trying to use this technique on my Jeep seats. I purchased everything used in the video except for the air compressor. The temp is in the 60's. I do not have an empty 303 bottom to make a squeegee out of so I started with cutting one out of a plastic file folder which is flexible yet solid. However, it spread the silicone like plaster and was full of gullies and striated texture. I also masked off a smaller area on my seats to begin with. I ended up removing all the material and trying again. This time I used a rubber, large flat tub disk stopper and cut it in half and rounded the corners. This worked better. I ended up with pilling of the silicone trying to smooth out ridges and they are impossible to get off. I have started and removed all the silicone three times and still have the pilling issue and also if I try to level out the application, it's like pushing clay around. It really does take some skill to be successful at this and experience with the timing and directions in which to smooth out the application. I found the 99% will actually lift the silicone if I try to clean an area to re-apply silicone to address a bad spot. I found that using a blow dryer while smoothing the silicone helped some. I'm very frustrated with the work ability of the silicone. Also I didn't tape off the area as I found it left a ridge that was hard to work out along the seams. I have two questions: How to I remove the piling of the silicone without losing all my work and 2) Will the paint cover up less than perfect areas with a few coats. At this point, I am kicking myself for not just purchasing leather and sewing new seats (because I can at least use a sewing machine with less headache). I think that if you could do some video showing how to recover from mistakes and difficulties with the application with closeup shots, it would be extremely helpful. Thanks so much!

@@SweetProjectCars Well, I've come this far so ... I'm not certain why I have the piling other than perhaps I'm working the silicone too much not know when close enough is close enough. I am worried the feathering of the edges may show under the paint. I natural light during the day and bright light when the natural fails to be able to see well as the translucent nature can fool the eye if not under close inspection. And there may be an incompatibility with the products given the temperature in my home and humidity. My home is cool too and I found that the silicone responded better to the smoothing with heat. I also applied multiple thin coats of SEM 38353 Plastic Prep - 12 oz. (wiping them back a bit like you did in the video and waiting according to the bottle directions ) then tried to apply the silicone again. I also tried to apply the silicone with multiple applications before it cured without the SEM 38353 Plastic Prep - 12 oz. between applications. Both of these practices in theory should have been fine. I purchased Sil Poxy because I need to build the silicone along some significant creases and I want to be sure the layers will adhere well. I actually wasn't able to remove all silicone so I do have a thin layer which looks ok but need another application for sure. I plan to use the Sil Poxy followed by the paint-silicone mixture. I'm not sure if I should warm the seat a bit to allow the silicone to glide better or not. Before I stray paint, I will use the SEM 38353 Plastic Prep - 12 oz. to prep. Pilling with silicone, I believe is due to incompatibility of products which may be due to temperature. Either way, I'll find out how the Sil Poxy will perform.

When repairing a seat that has multiple cuts and imperfections, I assume you can apply multiple coats of the sealant glue? Also if you can't get it perfectly flat with the applicator and your fingers, is it possible to sand the finished surface prior to painting to get a uniform surface texture? Love the video! I have a concern maybe you can address: I was in painting/waterproofing 20+ years. A big no-no was painting over silicone unless silicone was a special “paintable” grade. Have you had any durability or longevity issues? I have a G37 needs some work, and my kids are in and out a few times a day. It does look fantastic, Darrin. I've got a pair of large wing chairs that I'm halfway done restoring. But I haven't put any filler on them yet. Seeing your comment got my attention. The way this very impressive video plays is 99% misleading. I wonder how many DIYers followed this video closely and then had all of their hard work go to waste. After reading your comment and the "answer" I looked for and saw the later video with a piece of cardboard and some blue spray-paint. They use a standard plastic bondo spreader and mix the paint and silicone adhesive together on the cardboard. When they did this original video, they don't mix the silicone with the paint. I don't know what the reasoning is behind this, but I'm looking at all of these people in the comments, excited to copy their methods who have failed because of some big time quackery. I learn how to do a bunch of stuff on KZbin following the instructions of a bunch of people who are professionals, or DIY'ers who learned the hard way. I've saved hundreds of dollars fixing my own car, building a saw-buck, learning tips on selling stuff online, none of those videos mislead me. But this video...Maybe they like to giggle around the campfire at all the suckers who bought the oh-so-specific products, but failed miserably. I know that I will avoid these guys' videos like the plague. I want to tell you, Darrin, that I appreciate that you took the time to ask why the Emperor has no clothes. Big ups.
