I keep same the pad in my thermacell and add a few drops of permethrin + blue dye (from a dropper bottle) each time I use it. It seems to be as effective as the real pads.

I use off with picaridin. I spray it in a bottle that has an eye dropper and drop a few drops on each pad. It works just as well and they don’t smell as bad! For anyone wondering about the all natural stuff I have used the stem all natural stuff and it worked but it’s oily and even light drops eventually makes the thermocell messy. I have probably 100 used mats but I just keep the same ones in my thermocells and put a few drops on about 5-6 hours they last longer but I just prefer to keep them a little more heavy on smoke output. They seem to work effectively for 5-6 hours minimum per dose! If I don’t fire them up in the evening we get eaten alive on our pool deck

@BrianDhvTinkerer4 ай бұрын
@raykeogh1972 it uses a piezo crystal for the spark. Sometimes if junk or carbon residue gets on the spark wire it will short the spark and prevent any ignition! You may need to blow it with compressed air and see if that cleans off any gunk from the piezo igniter

Permethrin is a widely used insecticide that is highly effective against a variety of pests, including mosquitoes. When comparing permethrin to prallethrin and piperonyl butoxide (the active ingredients in Ridsect Mosquito Mat-F), there are several factors to consider: 1. Effectiveness: • Permethrin: Known for its strong insecticidal properties, it is used in a variety of applications, including clothing treatment, sprays, and mosquito repellent devices like Thermacell. • Prallethrin: A fast-acting pyrethroid that is effective in space treatments, such as mosquito mats and coils. • Piperonyl Butoxide: Not an insecticide on its own but enhances the effectiveness of other insecticides like prallethrin. 2. Mode of Action: • Permethrin: Kills insects on contact and through ingestion. It affects the nervous system of insects, causing paralysis and death. • Prallethrin: Similar to permethrin, it acts on the nervous system of insects, leading to rapid knockdown and death. • Piperonyl Butoxide: Inhibits the enzymes that break down insecticides in insects, making other insecticides more effective. 3. Application: • Thermacell Devices: Often use allethrin or prallethrin, which are similar to permethrin in terms of effectiveness but are optimized for vaporizing and dispersing in the air. • Permethrin: More commonly used in sprays, clothing treatment, and direct application to surfaces. In summary, permethrin is very effective for a wide range of applications, including personal protection and area treatment. Prallethrin and piperonyl butoxide are also effective, particularly in products designed for continuous release in an area, like mosquito mats and coils. For Thermacell devices, prallethrin and related pyrethroids are specifically chosen for their ability to vaporize and provide spatial repellency. While permethrin is highly effective, its use in Thermacell devices might not be as optimal as prallethrin, which is designed for that specific delivery method. Therefore, prallethrin, as used in Thermacell devices, would likely perform better in those specific applications compared to permethrin, which is more versatile but not necessarily designed for vaporizing devices.

I usually let it run for about 3 to 4 hours, which is the usual run time. Then just let the pad cool off and add a few more drops and it’s good for a few more hours.

I read the problem with this hack is your lowing the quality of the product considerably... Permethrin does not vaporize as well as allethrin or prallethrin... The other thing is when you are running on straight butane it doesn't get as hot as if it's mixed with isobutane so it never really reaches that hot point of total protection Butane needs isobutane to get hot enough to admit the vapor as well.. Don't get me wrong what you're doing is working but it's working at about 50%...
@BrianDhvTinkerer2 ай бұрын
I haven’t really actually noticed any difference in performance in terms of the ability to kill mosquitoes. I’ve been using the refilled cartridges and just using butane, but you may be right. Certainly not that I have noticed in terms of difference. I bet if a controlled experiment was done looking at the LD50, then there would be noticeable differences. Thanks for an interesting point.
