Tried this yesterday with two Craftsman 14.4 V batteries that would not recharge for years. It worked for both of them! After the first one worked, I used my multi-meter to check the voltage on the other 'dead' battery. It was around 9.5V but after I hooked up a separate fully charged battery pack I had for a different drill, I got it to jump up to near 16 V and that was only with one minute of charge. I used test wires rather than scissors. I was just looking to buy new packs or replace the inner batteries on those Craftsman batteries but found this AWESOME tip and this saved me a ton of money and extra effort. I used the cordless drill extensively today with no problems. This tip was RIGHT ON THE MONEY!!

Note to anyone before posting a derogatory comment: 1. I didn't show that the other battery also worked to prove I hadn't switched them because I didn't realise how suspicious some YT viewers are at the time. If I had known that then I would have shown it. 2. Yes, the light was lit at the beginning because I forgot to switch the camera on when I first jump started it and once it had some charge I couldn't redo it. In fact, since I did it the battery has not needed it again. 3. The battery is still working 15 months later. 4. I don't care if you believe it works or not. I am just trying to pass on a tip which may help some. 5. The battery will not explode just because it is being given a little charge from the other battery initially. I don't care if you have worked in the battery industry since Moses was a boy. 6. Any idiots who have nothing better to do than swear and make stupid comments will just be banned.

Great bush fix, we use it all the time. A quick charge when batteries are put in put in parallel like this (one under charged- one at regular charge) can cause some damage to the cells due to rapid current flow, but unless you're comfortable adding in a resistor and slowing the process down it's a great way to stop the corporate greed that the companies make by over charging for batteries. All the best from another island dweller

@jaileal88064 ай бұрын
@@maxwellhouse1902 I use a big resistor so it doesn't get too hot. 5 W cement resistors which i sneak out of old/ discarded TV sets (CRTs) etc work well. If you're going to open up CRTs be aware of the shock risk and make sure you understand how to open them up safely)In terms of ohms, I just use whatever i find, as any resistance to current flow is better than none. I guess you could try different ohm ratings and see what you prefer.

Same with electric golf carts. If the batteries drain completely out or below a certain low voltage, they will not respond to the golf cart charger. In that situation I read on a blog just disconnect and separate the two batteries and charge them individually with a car battery charger to bring the voltage back up past the minimum tolerance for the golfcart charger to work again. IMO, Connecting the tool batteries with the scissors is bringing the dead battery back up within the minimum voltage for the charger system to charge that battery again. So many golf cart owners have spent big bucks on new batteries because they didn't know. The other guys on that blog site saved me lots of money just like your tip will with battery powered tools. I've got a CEL multitool that hasn't been used for years. The battery was completely dead and wouldn't charge. This is so old the company stopped making the tool 10 years ago and the battery 5 years ago and nowhere has replacements. I (very nervously) followed your instructions and linked up to the only other rechargeable battery I have which is a Makita. I was expecting one or both batteries to go bang, but apart from a few initial sparks, it's totally worked. I'm charging the battery fully now, but did a test after 20 mins of charging and my multitool came to life. This has saved me a lot of money replacing this tool. Thank you so much.

Well it's working and cuts wood but even after leaving it on charge for 24 hours won't show more than one bar power on the multitool. Any advice to get it fully charged? @@JPinFuerteventura Well to be honest there isn't much to see in Winslow besides the "Standing On The Corner" exhibit. For those wanting the a much better Route 66 experience, I'd recommend driving down the road a bit further to Williams. The diners are all 1950's style and they have the "Polar Express" train that takes you up to the rim of the Canyon. Wait. Why am I going into all this? LOL.

It works best and wont wreck your good battery if you use a dc constant current constant voltage power supply. But even then you do actully run the risk of burning them up. Just be careful, if they start to get hot get it outside and on the ground.
@mds1986ms4 жыл бұрын
Oh and make sure its not a lithium battery. These NiCad nickle cadmium batteries. Thats extremely important.

@@TheDcrocks1 I tried it today and as God as my witness it did work! Brilliant,,, same concept as jump starting a car battery. You could even use a DC charger and check voltage of battery frequently off the charger till you get it to what voltage your battery is. Thanks and God bless

Thank you sir! I found you via a Google search. I have 18V DeWalt LiON batteries for my drill and one was DOA. I followed your scissors method and in just a few seconds I was able to get a slow light and it’s charging. No one died in the process and it’s charging now. If it fails I will just get a new 20V kit, while not cheaper, it makes more sense.

Black & decker order a battery
@samueljames93427 жыл бұрын
It's not physics, the charger is just a little too smart. When you plug a battery in to charge, the charger checks for the presents of a battery, if there is 0 voltage it doesn't see a battery to charge, so there is no output. If you boost the voltage a couple volts and plug it in, the charger sees a low charge and will charge. This doesn't necessarily have to be due to corrosion (although it could be). A battery left sitting for an extended period of time can go completely dead and do the same thing.
@blessedjohn6 жыл бұрын
Samuel James I was thinking the same thing being the chargers smart sensor. Some times smart man made items still need to get a little help :0)
@42lookc6 жыл бұрын
Samuel Jones. Logical. Totally dead = 'smart' charger doesn't even recognize it's there. Small hit of juice into it = 'smart' charger now sees a battery and goes to work.
@buczkotamas35266 жыл бұрын
Actually charger seas the battery, but (usually) won't charge it if the LiPo cell voltage is below 2.4 v.
@twcaldwell19516 жыл бұрын
car battery smart chargers are the same way, give your dead battery a little boost and the smart charger will pick it up and charge the battery. I have done this many times.

So the idea is to get enough of a charge into the "dead" battery such that the charger will not see it as a "dead" battery and recharge it.

@@JPinFuerteventura JP. Your video makes a lot of sense. It's just like jump starting a car battery. I have a question though. After you jump start the dead battery, give it a full charge and run it down again, will it recharge normally or do you have to jump start it again with a working battery, etc.?
@ralph0808z4 жыл бұрын
@Swizzle Dwezzl Thanks for the tip. I guess the real problem is that if you don't use the (old) battery for a long time it will completely die (as in the video). I still have my "dead" battery (never recycled it yet) and I'm going to try to revive it tomorrow. Thanks for the reply!
@JPinFuerteventura4 жыл бұрын
@@ralph0808z I have never had to restart that battery again as it always charges when put in the charger. This was made 3 years ago and only recently has that battery started to hold its charge for less time than normal.

I've been doing this for a couple of years now.....but with lead-acid batteries. I bought a new electronic charger and it would not charge some batteries....the "very dead" ones. Linked them to a good fully charged one.... (-ve to -ve.... +ve to +ve..) for a minute or so. And hey presto.... they accepted being connected to the charger.
