How To Ride A Horse Without The Handbrake On - In this video, I will show you how to tell if you are riding with the handbrake on. I rode with the handbrake on for quite some time until someone explained to me how to check if I was and how to fix it. There are lots of horse riding lessons and horse training videos out there to enjoy but if you are riding with the handbrake on you are sabotaging yourself and your horse as being able to ride with the handbrake off is one of the foundations of good horse training. I look forward to hearing from you in the comments as to whether you are riding with the handbrake on or not.

I absolutely love forward moving horses. I also loved how you rode him right through his tension without shutting him down and causing a blow up. Forward horses eventually learn to listen to the seat and slow once they don’t feel trapped by the hands. I think too many people expect a finished horse in too short a timeframe and rush it by trying to over control the horse’s gaits. it’s so hard to see fearful people riding forward horses and shutting down all that lovely rhythm. I wonder sometimes why people don’t just find a horse with more whoa than go if they don’t want to go forward, and then all horses and riders would be happier.

Amen..!! I've battle myself with teachers for so long cause what they wnated to teach me is to ride WITH the handbrake on! While I learn the opposite with my very old and very educated mare!!! Every jump or dressage stuff I learn with my mare was super smooth while at courses with teahcers telling me to use more my hands and grip more the mouth I was having trouble doing the exercices right!! Since I stop lessons, I use to ride more like it is needed, 80% the body, like 15% the feet and the little that is left is the hand!!!

I’m guilty of this! 🙋🏻‍♀️ During my lessons, my trainer can always tell when my horse is about to speed up and will cue me to “circle” him. I’m getting better at feeling it when I ride on my own. It’s a work in progress! Thanks for making these great videos that address these “everyday” issues! 🙏🏻🥰

Great video, and very insightful. Just had my sixt lesson and for the first time in medium trot (I believe it's called? Sorry English is not my native language). I guess it will take a little time to get used to because boy, was I in awe about the sudden strength and speed of the horse and I definitely put on the handbrake unwillingly. I'm sure the (beautiful Frisian) horse gave a big eye-roll about my beginner mistakes but we will manage it together. Thank you for all your tips and tricks and greetings from the Netherlands

I have heard two ways of handling a horse who spooks - one is to just work right through it or what you did, stop and calm him and maybe show what the concern was. Thoughts? Thank you. Love your vids!
@BasicHorseTraining

I think it depends on the horse ... I know Rebel and I knew that he would settle once he could see that it was only a tractor behind him and the tractor was going to keep popping up over the hill. They were plowing the side of a hill. I have done a video on how I manage spooking horses so I will add that link here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hZbbg2qae9hgftU

Thank you. Sometimes, when we are going outside, I'm riding with my handbrake on. It's difficult, because my horse is not listening to me because of all the monsters in the bushes. So I think, we have to learn it first at the riding arena ( to train it and become safe) and then outside? LG Ina

When he is like that do lots of transitions. Stop, go, turn. Keep him doing something every few strides and he will soon have no choice but to concentrate on you and not the monsters in the bushes. 😊

Hi Josie, how does this concept compare to having the rein tight when you go for outride/trailride as the horse tends to fly off as soon as she is outside

I do not ride with handbrake on anymore, but I have many student, who do it when I first meet them ;-) I always look for the same good rythm no matter the tempo. This means that the strides will have to get longer and shorter. Do I understand you correctly, that you want the rythm to change with the tempo? Ps: thank you for all the great videos you make - I especially love the one with the seat in sitting trot :-)
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Katrine 🙂. I don't want the rhythm to change - it should always be a clear 4, 2 or 3 beat rhythm (depending on the gait you are in). I always want the rhythm the same but the tempo will usually get faster when you "let go of the reins" if you have had the handbrake on. I'm not sure if I used the word rhythm when I meant tempo in the video and I apologise if I did. I have to say I often have to correct myself with this issue 😐

@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
If he doesn't listen to your "seat" Meredith turn onto a circle line, as that will make him want to slow down and do a down transition to a slower gait. You may need to do that quite a few times. Just make sure you use your seat first and he should soon listen to your seat. 🙂

It's a case of holding your core for a moment , the moment depends on how long it takes the horse to respond and then release 😀 xxx
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
MaryAnn I think this is a great video idea so I will do one on this with my next batch of videos. To give you a quick answer it is exactly as lulee said - I hold my core for a moment. Rebel has been taught to listen to this in his early training but if he hadn't listened to it I would have either turned onto a circle or done a down transition. Which one I chose would have depended on the situation and what I felt would be the best at that moment in time.

From my training... you only ride with contact if your asking for collection, otherwise stay off the reins. With my training, you are still riding with the brakes on. A loose rein should hang down, so there is 0 contact with the mouth. ABSOLUTELY NONE. The rein should hang downward off the bit. If the rein goes sideways or worse yet, in an upward direction off the bit, you are still riding with the brake. or having rein contact. They should hang like that, until you need to give directions to the horse . Even stopping should be done with your seat, not the reins. From a standstill, you should be able to lay the reins on the horses neck and proceed with wtc and halt without touching the reins at all. That is when you know your horse is rating his speed by your body., not with your hands. It also proves that you do not need the reins for balance.... Have you ever tried that? If so, can you post a vid of it.. A vid of you trying it for the first time. That way you can show your audience just how well trained you and your horse is.. but don't practice it at all first.. that would be cheating

Hand brake always off , and foot hovering across the brakes , but not using them , then never use them both too equally xx
@BasicHorseTraining
@BasicHorseTraining 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Horsemom, the handbrake should never be on. That doesn't mean that you never use your reins to stop your horse it means that when your horse is going forward you are not hanging onto the reins to control his speed. He should maintain the speed you set with your seat/body. The way to see if your hands are controlling his speed is to give the rein and see if the tempo/speed increases. If it does you were controlling the speed with the reins. I hope that explains it a little more. 🙂
