Luke Watson has created a video series for the BEGINNER and NEW RIDER of an automatic motor scooter. Want to learn how to ride a Scooter? Then this series of videos will take you through the steps. How to ride a VESPA.
PART FIVE: Slow Ride and Lane Filtering | Rear Brake & Throttle Control
In this video, Luke explains how to ride your scooter at low speed with maximum control. Does your bike wobble when you go slow? Do you feel you need to stick your knees, legs and feet out when going slow on a motorcycle? Well, this video will solve these problems. Luke will explain and demonstrate how to control your scooter at low speed and weave between cars like a pro!
Luke also explains how to use the rear brake to control the speed and the throttle to keep the bike steady, straight and upright. Luke explains and demonstrates some rear braking control exercises and techniques for the beginner rider to learn and practice. The key focus of this lesson is teaching the beginner how to control your Vespa's momentum by utilising centrifugal force. Luke will show you how the engine power and speed will steady your bike and keep your bike up and straight at low speeds. The key is to use the POWER to keep the bike energy output HIGH and the REAR BRAKE to control the speed of movement. The aim of this video is to help you keep your auto scooter under control at low speed and prevent wobbles. Bike Control = Safety & Confidence
The key points in this HOW TO VIDEO are:
~ Maintain correct posture, keep knees in and feet on foot pegs & footrests
~ Maintain balance at low speed
~ Eliminate excessive steering and wobbles
~ Throttle increase to suit load and produce centrifugal force
~ Keep bike in a tight space and straight
~ Rear brake to control speed
~ Understand the principles of lane filtering and lane splitting

Hello sir. I am a student who was going through a series of videos on how to ride a bike. I tried riding one 5 years ago and I met with a major accident because no one taught me these small techniques that really matter. Today, after all these years, I decided to ride a bike again. This video was the video that helped me the most ! Thank you so much for this and sending all my love. Cheers !

I’ve got more experience riding a motorcycle at slow speed and having just purchased a scooter I struggle more with it because of the small wheels and slow drive engagement. This lesson on keeping the drive engaged while regulating movement with the brake just makes so much sense. The scooter equivalent of threshold clutch engagement and brakes.

I rode motorcycles for many years and gave it up but interested in a scooter if I ever figure out how to afford one on a pension. I'm finding your videos helpful I'm learning things I didn't know. Just for the record the force that keeps a bike wanting to stay upright is the gyroscopic effect of the wheels. The trick with the throttle and the brake does work I used it on big motorcycles too. Thankyou for the knowledge it is something that's needed....cheers

Hi Ian! Love your tutorials. I'm a proud owner of a new scooter and your videos have helped me build confidence all the way here in the Philippines. Your tip specifically on the rear break has been a game-changer for my "throttle anxiety." One question though, is it a good idea to hold the rearbreak when making a small you turn at a somewhat busy road?

Thanks for your videos as they are very informative. Therefore, for the slow ride I've learnt it very differently than the way that you've demonstrated (won't you damage the brakes like this? Also, for if something happen and you release the rear brake while applying throtte, you will ride suddenly very fast and you might lose control). I don't apply rear brake, instead I play with the throtle where I apply it momentarily ONLY => vruuum -ride- vruuum -ride- vruuum -ride- vruuum -ride- vruuum -ride stop. :D

Hello, does the slow ride maneuver also works with a CBS (Combined braking system) motorcycle like the honda clicks. since they are using front and rear brakes everytime you squeeze the left brake.

Hello sir, thank you so much for the tips and tricks on how to ride the scooty. However, I have 1 question with respect to slow riding. In India, we have all sorts of roads ranging from the good flat roads to bumpy and perilous ones. One some parts, I keep the throttle to the minimum whereas in some, the road is so rutty that I my scooty becomes wobbly and on increasing the throttle, I would literally fly off my seat. Any suggestions on how to maintain the speed on the perilous roads ?
@ianwatsons
@ianwatsons Жыл бұрын
When I see a bump/hole/crack approaching I usually do two things (1) get my bum outta the seat and (2) back off the throttle and let the momentum carry me through the trouble.

I tried this technique, it might damage your engine and belt. Instead, I also tried using accelerator slightly to keep scooter upright at slow speed(it was around 10Kmh or below). It was enough to stop wobbling for me without applying rear break

Am I right in thinking the slow-ride technique doesn't work for electric scooters? The brakes on the electric 'sharing' scooters in the Netherlands are so strong, there's hardly a gradient between braking and not-braking - or is it just a matter of very subtle practicing? (Brands used here are 'Niu N1S' and 'Super Soco CUx').
@ianwatsons
@ianwatsons 9 ай бұрын
Yes you are right - they have a different braking system. So this technique is not for those kinds of scooters.

good question. Engines are designed to carry loads (e.g. carry people and go up hills) and so the main wear n tear with the brake - accelerator technique is on the brake pads. Brake pads a cheap and easy to replace if you ever need to.

I cant se when there is nessesary to ride that slow.. I mean you just need to go a little bit faster and your ballance will be just fine. And isnt this technique damaging the drive train? Its almot as if you would use your clutch to regulate your speed in a manual driven car or bike isnt it? Im sure it will help if you really need to go this slow but if thats the case you can juat as easily just drop your feet down for support. 😎

You ask some good questions. I live in a busy busy city right now (Bangkok) with loads of traffic jams... so this skill is essential. Regarding drive train damage... I'd suggest you check with a mechanic and ask them (I'm no mechanic).
