How to ride flying changes for jumpers with Kirstin Kelly. Being able to do flying changes in your show jumping round makes it's so much easier to keep a rhythm and to keep the horse balanced. How to ride flying changes is easy when you know how. Gone are the days of the old fashioned throw your weight over the new leading leg, its all about getting a jumpy canter and touching your horse with your outside leg. The earlier you start asking for changes the easier it is. Once you ask a couple of times the horses will often offer them to you before you even ask.
Its really important to have a great quality canter before you start so here is a link to riding the "Square exercise " as it makes the horse much lighter on his forehand.

I love this exercise! Thank you for posting. When I ask my boy for the change, I don't get any response from him. He's well developed, and is sat back on his hocks in his canter, but I just get zero response when I ask him with my outside leg, or my schooling whip. Do you have any advice for me?

In all my years of producing horses and coaching i have only had two that wouldn't change. At the end of a session ( not in the middle as it fires them up) create a forward canter in two point, then tap them behind your leg. The secret is to make it fun and a decent canter, not a quiet dressage one. Always do it at least three times in the one direction

Behind your new outside leg so if your on the right canter , loop back towards the track and tap behind your right leg

Hi Reilleigh, Make a system. Pick up canter, roll back turn towards the rail, tap behind your leg at the last stride before the rail ( that way he will rock off the rail) then talk to him and then walk pat. Walk till he stops puffing ( if he gets wound up) then repeat in the same spot. Then you can keep him coming back to you. If he feels like he is going fast make the roll back turn small so you can keep the control. I'd love to know how your getting on with your changes. Kirstin
