What is a flying change? and how do you improve them?
This weeks Flying Change Friday had us dealing with a complicated issue - the ever challenging late flying change!
Captain is significantly stronger in one change than the other, and this video is going to take you through our process of addressing this issue, and correcting the change while we have time over the Corona Virus lock down period before he steps up to 4* eventing in 2021 where he will be required to perform the flying change in his dressage test.
Some of the steps we will explore include;
Revisiting the walk to canter transition
Improving his forward reaction to the dressage whip and leg
Making sure he is straight
-Making him aware of his hind legs at all times
Always trying to position him with the weaker hind leg more underneath his body and trying to get it moving quicker
Ensuring he is not using his front end (neck/shoulders etc) to launch into the transition but instead getting him to stay a little rounder and asking him to push from behind throughout the upward transitions
We are absolutely not claiming to be flying change or dressage experts, we are just hoping to share a little insight into the reality of training a complicated issue which we hope you will find useful if you are having similar issues (or interesting if you are not!)
You will notice we have included it all - the good, the bad and the ugly. We want to be honest about our approach to training and ensure we are giving you realistic expectations to consider which is why you will notice inconsistencies in the contact, frame, rhythm etc at times, for the greater purpose of what we are doing in todays exercise.
All the best with your training, See you next time!
