New rider here and was just out there at McCain, so I recognize the sections where you shot this video. It is great to see how those whoops are navigated. I'll have to try your tips next time and (with practice) maybe I won't feel like a blundering fool out there. Thanks for the instruction!

This is mostly focused at all the new riders asking questions... The whoops are usually the first place a newer rider starts to "ride properly." By "ride properly" I mean to ride the bike like it is a skateboard. You balance entirely on the pegs. So far as you are able, the handlebars are used exclusively to control the bike and never to hang on. In evenly spaced whoops, you can run a steady speed so that makes it easier (without accelerating/decelerating), and soon you'll find that you can remove pressure from the handlebars, even to the point of rowing along with the motion they are tracing in front of you, and as you hang on more and more gently three things happen. First, the bike suspension can really start working as it was designed. Second, it is very easy to maintain a still upper body. Third, it is much less effort. Nearly every riding mechanic that is taught is really a trick to maintain this balance in yet another situation. It is rarely mentioned, but worth stepping back and noting all these techniques you'll learn are all supporting this goal of continuous relaxed balance. Once you master that feeling in the whoops, try to take it with you everywhere. Even at the race start, and especially braking into corners. When the whoops are uneven in spacing and height, you start modulating power, trampolining the bounce with your legs, and pushing/pulling the handlebars to partially manage the front wheel attitude. It will come naturally with practice, once you've got your balance mastered (above). The main trick at that point is keeping your eyes looking as far down the track as possible. You can stay in rhythm with what is passing under you with your peripheral visual and the feel through your legs. Also... if you want to get better, do all the standard MX drills. Especially the cornering drills. Whatever drill you hate, do that twice as much.

If you are riding lots of whoops or doing a desert race, I would recommend investing in some STEG PEGZ, which are rubber pegs that you bolt behind your pegs behind your knees, which allow you to take some pressure of your arms and gives you more control over the back end of your bike. If you want to see some examples of riding whoops at high speed, I suggest watching some videos of the Finke Desert Race, namely Toby Price. Great video fellas, this has helped me massively.

I run Stegz Pegz in sand and they allow me to keep the bike pinned for longer and keep the bike in control when it gets really rough.

We’ve used Steg Pegz in the Baja 1000 and loved them. They are also great for desert riding. They help to not get arm pump also

You should be doing one video on how to do whoops with ad Adventure bike that does not have the same suspension travel. That would be great! Cheers

Our local track here in escondida new mexico some of the whoop sections are massive. I went last weekend after a long time of not riding and they kicked my butt. By the end of a 6 mile run I was gassed.

Riding whoops is one of the toughest thing you can do on a dirt bike let alone 6 miles of them. Looks like I need to make a trip to New Mexico and check them out 👍🏻

Do you get to a certain speed and just keep it smooth at that speed? I find I get faster and faster and then I have to back off as I start to get a little out of control bounce wise, if that makes sense!
@SedlakOffroadSchool
@SedlakOffroadSchool Жыл бұрын
Yes, you want to find a speed that gives you a good rhythm and then stay there. It sounds like you are too hard in the throttle and pick up too much speed. Try to play a little more with the throttle and focus on finding your rhythm 👍🏻

my thought. no mention of timing the back tire bounce on the whoop with throttle stab. This I generally do when I ride whoops.
